McKenzie: Kopitar Contract "in final stages" 8 year, 80MM

Pay the man. The time to win is now and during the next 5 years.

After that, 5 years from now Kings will have ~32M tied up in a 33 year old Kopitar, 36 year old Carter, 36 year old Dustin Brown, 35 year old Jon Quick, and 39 year old Marian Gaborik.

It won't be 5 more years Tony. We have 2-3 years at best, including this season, if Dean can't unload some bad contracts and soon.

You keep saying that.

Remind me to hound you in 2020-21 when we are lifting another Cup again. :)

You're probably right, Brown's contract is the most glaring boat anchor of the bunch unless he rediscovers his scoring ability. Of course, Dean will do that, and the team will look much different than it looks today, just as it did 5 years ago.

If there's anyone that will find a way to deal, it's DL.

Regardless, though it's more than I would like, this is exactly the guy you should pay.

Congrats Kopitar, sign that puppy and let's all rejoice that you will retire a King legend.

Kopitar signing was priority and rightly so. Let's see what the fellas pull off this year before we completely write off Lucic, could turn into a Gaborik 2.0 situation if we're lucky.

Remember when Anze had linemates such as Raitis Ivanans, Scott Thornton, Brian Willsie and Kyle Calder during his first couple seasons with the Kings? Anze sure paid his dues. Where would this team be without him?

As great as he is, and as good as it is that he stays with us, imo a $10M cap hit for a 28-year old whose PPG has been going down since 2010 is too much.

I'm sorry but I have to say this.

Other than that, irrespective of the cap hit, it would've been a disaster if he had to be replaced.

doesn't matter, pay him $15M if you have to

where else are you getting a true 1C with multiple cup runs under his belt?

The key to the deal is if the cap hit isn't as bad in the first few years. That would help DL with Lucic, Toffoli and Pearson and also since the cap seems to go up every year.

his actually salary can fluctuate but not his cap hit. the cap hit is the average over the years

The cap hit is flat--it won't fluctuate. So if the numbers are right, that's just a straight 10m cap hit for 8 years.

He's on a 68 point pace already and that's with a garbage start. His career average is a 72. And that pace can change easily if he keeps up his production lately, 15 points in 9 games since Christmas is a 1.67 PPG, a 137-point pace.

His 'decline' is overstated and the eye test proves that. The dude is playing like Marshawn Lynch on the boards, carrying 2-3 dudes with him all game every game.

It's absolutely fair value for Kopitar in his prime. It will certainly hurt later. But that doesn't mean we can't just be happy for what he brings now and that it's well-earned.

Really hoping for Kopitar to push Lombardi to the $10,000,000 mark instead of the 9,750,000... hold out for it Kopi... you're worth it!!!

Great news this morning. :handclap:
