Might be something we review during the season or next off season. Depends on what other teams offer the Jets for PLD and his 2 RFA years left and also depends on how Dach looks this season.

Look at it from the Jets perspective. If Dach has a great season this year with the Habs, he might be untouchable and if PLD tells them he will only do long term extension with the Habs, they are in a dilemma.

I heard the Habs were trying to trade for the Sens 7th OA and then flipping it for PLD. Dach was plan B. I'll let you guys decide if this has any credibility

For sure, there's risk waiting it out. I mean, other than maybe PLD suddenly stepping up offensively, maybe in 2 years, we're WORSE than we are now and he doesn't want anything to do with Montreal.

Like I said, I wouldn't be outraged but we'd be giving up two NHL bodies, #2 and #3 centers for us anyhow, That said, we'd need to make other moves like you mentioned as our cap situation is a complete mess.

Anyhow, I don't want to piss anyone off since this is a Dach thread, so I'll say this; I think Dach has a lot of potential. He's lost so much development time and the entire Chicago team on and off the ice was a complete shit show over there. With MSL. MPP and Nicholas helping with development, I'm excited to see if we can mold Dach into something good.

Reading more about him it seems to me he is more like a playmaker Galchenyuk than KK.
What I have seen, he has great hands but his feet does not follow, he has a tendency to slow down while stickhandling (which was also an issue with Galchenyuk). He has a great shot but he barely use it and most of the time it's from horrible angles. He is poor at face off (as noted) and although he is large at 6'4 he is soft and he rarely throw hits. He has nice offensive skillset and MSL could be the guy to kick start his career back on track. I do not know his character or determinantion but he is a project. I still believe his best position is on the wing but he will have to get bigger/stronger and improve his puck protection, board game and speed to do so. Best case scenario is a player similar to Ryan Johansen.

People are acting like he was drafted 5 days ago, little to no progression in 3 years and a wrist injury is a big deal.
I agree his wrist injury is a bit of a concern. As far as his progression goes, his wrist injury is the reason why we can't be concerned about it. His numbers were pretty good before the injury, that we know.

After the injury, we can't take those numbers seriously because of context. He didn't have an off-season to prepare himself adequately, he played while still injured and quite frankly, whole team was a mess last year.

He wasn't trying to develop KK. He was trying to win. He at least recognized that Jarvis is an elite talent but he messed around with Necas and left KK on lines with trash in favor of Trochek since he was trying to win.
All the NHL coaches are trying to win. Let the kids develop at lower levels with coaches for whom the job is development.

We don't know what the options are as fans. I think Petry is going to return something very good and we will save cap space in that deal (regardless of $1M retention or taking back a 1/2 year cap dump at lower cap hit)

A guy like Hoffman will get a 2nd rounder (or two) and we take back and 1 year dump. He's not difficult to move base on his PP skill and proven track record. Won't get a 1st or Grade A but we won't have to pay a future to move him IMO.

I don't know. I would not use the highly unlikely narrative at this point in time.

There are a few things you/we need to consider:

We aren't in a position of strength for negotiations. Other teams know our cap situation and will likely lowball offers like McDonagh's trade.

The Hoffman trade is as trickier. Prior to the 2021 trade deadline, he was healthy scratch by the Blues. In the end, he stayed with the team and walk away as an UFA. To me, this means that his value isn't great. I don't believe that many teams will line up to get his services. I don't see contenders willing to pick him up and I barely see the reconstructing teams trading for him.

I don't know the difficulty and you're not wrong... teams with cap space will use their leverage. But I can see a Hoffman for a 2nd and 1 year cap dump coming back that is around $1M - $2M range.

We are going to find out very soon cause Hughes does have to make some moves and it might not be just Petry.

What's with those Danault comparisons? They are completely different types of players.
Sorry, my real point of the data comparison was to show that someone's lack of points in the NHL between 18 and 22 doesn't necessarily mean that much about their future. Even if Dach doesn't hit 40 points next year, as long as he improves, it's enough. Danault was just an example of a guy who got off to a slow start and didn't solidify his spot as an NHL regular till he was 24. If Dach does great this year under MSL, great. But we can afford to be a little patient.

Wasn't too hard for 39 yo Michael Handzus, 59 years old Brad Richards, Anisimov, Nick Schmaltz, Dylan Strome, Andrew Shaw, Marcus Kruger, Bob Lang and Ryan fkn Carpenter lmao.
Which of those players had increased production from career norm playing with Kane? In fact most of them had worse production than 18 year old Dach. Strome I guess counts but we can't yet rule out him just breaking out offensively unless he goes and sucks again on a different team next year. You kinda just proved the guys point. There's plenty of examples (NYI Tavares, Markov, Crosby) of players who actually have had serious effects on their linemates' statistics that track before and after playing with that player but Kane doesn't really have that.

It's a bad comparison lol.. Joel Otto.. we are really going back in time here. Is Slav going to be Jim Peplinksi? Adam Graves?
Lol. Otto could also fight which I don’t expect from Dach. I meant it as comparable offensive upside. Otto was big, skated OK, he looked better offensively with the eye test then he really was. But was an important cog in the Flames winning the Cup.

Would you do it?

Dach and Dvorak for PLD?
No way!!!!
P-L Dubois will be a UFA in near future. If he really wants to be a Hab...he'll find a way to give our Habs a fair deal (when he's a UFA).
And, I don't want him using our Habs as leverage ($$) when it's UFA time.

I like our CENTER depth injuries happen (better to have more CENTERS vs not enough):
Suzuki
Dvorak/Dach
Dach/Dvorak
Evans
Poehling

Player comparison (style/height/skating):
Trevor Linden? maybe Dach has some prime-Trevor Linden potential?

Habs need to keep Dach. With the price they pay, they believe on his potential and Dach have potential to be a very good player in this league.

Habs have assets to trade for PLD, Dvorak, 1st pick FLA 2023 and another thing.

I personally think Dach can still be a no.1 center in this league. He has too much talent and size to be push aside at 21yo. His rookie season was pretty good for a 18 yo and the start of his sophomore season was good to, before his injury. Last year was a tough year but he missed a good chumk of his off-season and to be honest, the whole team was trash also.

I think he his more talented than Suzuki but Suzuki's IQ is off the chart so i don't know who will be the best player going forward. Right now it's Suzuki no question. But i think there is a fair chance Dach might become the better of the two in the end.
Dach will be the MSL litmus test on developing young players, interesting times to come - MSL could end up being the ultimate game changer for this org.

The idea here is to offer slightly more than a 2 year rental (he's got 2 RFA years left) now and get the extension done as part of the deal (sign/trade). I'm not paying him north of $8M and if he really does want to play for the Habs, we might be able to get him for 7x7 or 7x7.5

PLD is just as good as Suzuki and only 1 year older. He fits. Building block put in place
