This is just like the Hunter and Moreau signings, depth in case of injuries, but likely will end up on waivers and in Manchester sooner than later.

I can't get over this deal because nothing makes sense. The guy demanded a trade from Washington because he wasn't playing enough. What could we have possibly said to him to convince him to sign after he demands to play and us having 8 possible defensemen playing for us next year? This signing is an enigma. The other shoe has to drop.

To be honest, I don't think Schultz had any other options. No team would sign him for regular, top-six duties.

Why did he have a better season under Bordeau? What was he like when he did play well?

He was paired on the top line with Mike Green, behind Ovechkin, Semin, and Backstrom when all were in their prime. Remember, that was the season where the Caps averaged 3.86 goals per game. He was surrounded by an offensive powerhouse.

Yeah this makes zero ****ing sense. But for more reasons than you listed. First, our one need was 2nd line LW. We don't have a lot of cap space. So we go out and sign a MARGINAL at best press box warming dman? Alrighty.

But in terms of skillset... he's ****ing Keaton Ellerby but worse skater. Big but doesn't really use his size. Ellerby will hit once in a while but not enough. Can't shoot. Can't pass. Not smart. Not good. So we got a guy with less skills than Ellerby...

Unless they want to send Ellerby to Manchester (And his deal IS a two way like Holden speculated about), this makes zero sense. Just ****. Why. WHY!?

Yeah, throw me on the "what the hell does this signing mean" bandwagon. It makes zero sense.

If this is a part of something bigger, possibly a trade or something else to clear cap room for a forward, okay, let's see where this goes.

If this is simply Dean's answer to losing Scuderi, then holy ****.

Dean has gotten a lot of hero worship around here since the Cup win but don't forget this is the guy who has made quite is fair share of mistakes trying to plug holes and signing scrubs as "backup plans." It's never worked out. Hunter and Moreau were disasters in 2012 and this Schultz signing sounds eerily familiar. Schultz is a terrible, terrible hockey player.

Are we carrying eight defensemen next year? Is Mitchell healthy? Way too many question marks on the backend right now and signing ****ing Schultz doesn't ease any fears.

I think Dean did this just to watch cnshockey's head explode

I'd rather have ****ing Ellerby. Do you understand me. I'D RATHER PLAY KEATON. ****ING. ELLERBY.

I just don't get Dean at all...

It's the first day of free agency. A day teams notoriously pay threw the nose for players who in hindsight end up being poor value. Let's wait and see what happens over the summer. The team as is can compete and we can add through the year when we accumulate cap space. The sky is t falling yet. Plus who knows what youngsters Suprise plus Nolan, Voynov, King etc are now past there sophomore seasons so improvement should come.

If you havin' girl problems I feel bad for you son,
I got 99 problems
JEFF SCHULTZ IS NUMBER ONE.

He couldn't sign Holloway so he did the next best thing, sign someone we don't need instead lol.

Someone said dean rolled the dice, he didn't have to roll this dice.

I haven't seen Schultz lately, but he certainly wasn't that bad only a couple years ago. From what I've been reading, he even sucked at sucking last season.

Hopefully he just got disenchanted from not playing. He's certainly going to have to earn his way into the defensive core. We'll see if Sutter can work his magic and get him playing his butt off. If not, he's Manchester bound for sure.

I have no problems with this tbh. 700K for a depth guy that has potential.

I don't either ... and think signing Ellerby for that was fine :sarcasm: ... now please explain why the Frack did Dean just sign this Schultz guy ?

;) seriously though, could be just a bargaining chip, Dean says to RFA Muzzin and Martinez look I've got this cheap D man in the wings if you don't want to take your MQO ... sign or else kids. :) they do, then Dean puts Schultz on waivers and he's Manchester bound as a vet D presence for the young guys down there. I doubt he ever takes an NHL shift as an LA KING !

Ellerby to Manchester and Schultz as our seventh man? Would make sense if someone is traded.

Chalk it up as another low risk, average reward type of transaction in retaining Ellerby and signing Schultz. They'll likely compete with one another and possibly Martinez (if he's still around) to see who could be a serviceable option on the left side of the blueline in case the Kings' defense is dealt with injuries again.

As I stated in another discussion, the Bruins went through 9 different defensemen during the playoffs. That is where your depth is tested, when your team runs through a gamut of injuries. This would assure the avoidance of having to force inexperienced players into the lineup.

Pretty obvious this is injury insurance. If we lose 2 D at any one time we're carrying Andrew Campbell types as a 7, NOT what a team wants. Let's not forget Doughty and Regehr got hurt in the playoffs. Mitchell missed the whole year, Greene missed most of the season, and Martinez missed alot of time too. He's cheap and a just in case type guy
