It’s nice to hear that I’ve been right for years.

The BSB era will continue to destroy this team. It has an anaconda like grip, until frankly those men die off.

Also. John Tortorella was the single biggest mistake of a HC hire since my time following this team. The amount of power he already commands is disturbing. The man could throw puppies from rooftops, and remain employed until the day he dies.

He’s the voice for that old guard. For the alumni. He’s their megaphone in this “collaborative” structure.

But i was told Tortorella was the anti-bully because he was "leading the charge on rebuilds".

The fans of this shit scream the same vibe as the divorced middle aged guys here with lifted trucks, or sport cars trying to show off.

Morons. The lot of them. The whole league mocks this, and they proudly stand taller for being different.

Little dick energy. Your Philadelphia Flyers.

As far as experience, can't get more than Fletcher, Holmgren, Clarke, Lombardi.
How'd that work for you.

Colorado, Sakic 2 years as an advisor and Dubas as a newly minted assistant GM.

Maybe experience is overrated?

I started banging the "uh guys it sure looks like Clarke is giving Homer ideas" drum in the end of the Holmgren GM tenure.

All the team has done ever since then is constantly prove that.

Meh, typical corporate press conference. What did you expect them to say? We hired the best Flyer alumni we could find?

But did notice that Hilferty committed to the rebuild and said it was going to take years (plural). No "aggressive reload." No pretense of being competitive.
That's a huge change from the last decade.

Camillo in talking about Briere mentioned analytics and his analytical mind - I think that's one reason they wanted him to go to Wharton, to get exposed to business statistics, finance, etc. Not just for the business side, contract negotiations, etc., but also when he talks to analytics people he can actually speak their language (if you don't have any statistical background, the two reactions to analytics is either to dismiss them out of hand or blindly accept them as "magic").

The advisors may have thought Torts was a turnaround artist (that's Gallant), but he's comfortable with young players, they're just not comfortable with him, as it should be - tell Stoutland you have to coddle today's generation of players. I think a player you have to coddle (i.e. lacks the competitive fire and swagger to step up in big games) is called "trade bait."

I have no problem with Hilferty giving lip service to the past, the majority of his ST holders are men in their 40s and 50s (successful enough to have excess income to blow on STs) and he has to market to them. And I have no problem with a "Flyers way" if it means Carolina and Brind'Amour (a former Flyer!) as their model. Carolina plays sound, fundamental pressure hockey.
How'd I know a post like this was coming

This actually explains a lot about the people supporting these things, including our favorite "lol doomsday" friend who loves popping up when his other account doesnt get enough hits.

I can't be as outraged as you guys are... yet. It's obviously not looking good, i don't have any reason to be optimistic after Comcast's public masturbation session today. But i have to see what happens at the draft, what happens as far as actually trading off the guys that they need to trade off, what happens (or rather, what SHOULDN'T happen) in free agency.

Meh. It's always been Briere/Torts since the spring, and Briere has been groomed for the job for a couple years.

The idea that Fletcher was on board with his possible replacement who owed nothing to him or the advisors and had a direct pipeline to Comcast management is absurd. The man may have been mediocre in his hockey judgement, but understood office politics. Briere was forced on him.

Jones was chosen because by all reports he is a smart, personable hockey man, and he was on board with what Hilferty, Briere and Torts had already decided was the direction for the franchise. They weren't going to hire someone with a different vision for the rebuild.

Torts is not a dinosaur, his style of play is what I see in the playoffs, Carolina, Seattle, Dallas.
Aggressive forecheck, defensemen attacking the O-zone (and forwards cycling back), the low/high cycle in the O-zone.
The one team that blocked more shots than the Flyers? Vegas.
NJ is out and Toronto is on their way out - the two teams you'd consider to be "anti-Torts."
Edmonton is hanging in there at best.

I have no problem with what seems to be their vision for this team (ignore the Flyers' crap), I question whether they can execute that vision.
But only time will tell.

If you think his style of play is what Carolina, Seattle, and Dallas are pulling then you haven't watched a single game from any of his teams, including this one, since 2004.

Anyone want to point out that blocking lots of shots means the other team has lots of time to take shots against you?

That's reasonable. But set expectations in advance. What do they need to do at the draft to make you think this has a shot in hell of working? For me:

1. Draft someone within 3 spots of the consensus ranking at 7.
2. Trade Hayes
3. Trade at least two of the following: Provorov, Konecny, Hart, Tippett, Laughton
4. Move at least one of the albatross contracts

The reality is they will take someone at 7 within 3 spots of consensus but the not clear top guy guy available. They will trade Hayes but eat 50% and receive nothing back. They will trade no one else but say Briere needs time and is still acclimating despite the fact he's had the job for months and his performance doing those months was apparently so impressive that no one else even needed to be considered for the full time job.

We look forward to welcoming you in a couple of months to the club.

They're not getting much for Hayes, addition by subtraction.
They're not trading Tippett.
They are trading Provorov. They should trade Laughton.

You can't move the contracts, Couts, cross your fingers, if healthy, the perfect veteran anchor for a rebuild.
Atkinson has 2 years left, no big deal.
Ellis is LTIR forever, but has no value to a low cash flow team until his last season (i.e. salary equal or greater than cap hit).
Risto has 4 years left, hope for continued improvement, then he can be moved next summer with 3x5 and a rising cap.
Sanheim will have to really rebound for anyone to touch that contract.
