I know the Raps are hated but just compare what they are doing in looking for a coach. They are interviewing lots of people and using it as a great way to gather info on outside views of their team and players....and also to establish relationships in case future positions are available. It can't hurt to get outside info from others...especially when no one was going to hire Briere and Jones while they were conducting interviews. Instead, the Flyers choose the path with the least amount of work....and reward.

"Hammon was one of a few names that surfaced amid reports of the Raptors asking for permission to interview candidates currently affiliated with other organizations, a list that included former Raptors assistant and Raptors 905 head coach Patrick Mutombo; former Brooklyn Nets head coach and current Golden State Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson; Milwaukee Bucks assistant coach Charles Lee, Miami Heat assistant Chris Quinn, Philadelphia 76ers assistant Sam Cassell, and Sacramento Kings assistant Jordi Fernandez. Other candidates mentioned include former Raptors assistant, Raptors 905 head coach and current Vanderbilt University head coach Jerry Stackhouse, current Raptors assistant Adrian Griffin and Denver Nuggets assistant David Adelman.

Then there are some wild cards, with former Raptors head coach Dwane Casey thought to have registered interest and one source suggesting that Toronto has looked into the possibility of veteran NBA sharpshooter, turned podcaster, turned broadcaster JJ Redick — who has spoken openly about the possibility of getting into coaching — as being head coach material."
Keep your grubby hands off Sam Cassell!

The Flyers never had any intention of hiring a outside voice. If they did it would be a guy who thinks like they do. I think they want to “win” but they are bound and determined to have it be the Flyers way not the game pretty much everyone else is playing.
It also would not shock me if they did interview or ask to interview outside voices they were told no. The Flyers have obviously not been watching the playoffs and see how these teams are playing. They think they can win with grinding defense first hockey. It will continue to fail and they will be oblivious to it.

The depressing part is, if they really cleaned up their act, maybe by 2030 this team would be a contender. That was the glimmer of hope. After an already long miserable decade of wasting elite talent and not rebuilding. But now maybe by 2030 we can do this all again and hope that’s the start. If this Comcast led team has proved one thing it’s this: there is no come to Jesus moment.

Who fires Briere if after 5 years this thing is stagnant? Who determines that stagnancy? There is no one above him except for Hilferty and Jones. And the other issue of this chummy chummy group of chums is that personal relationships cloud judgment.

Who helps hire the next coach? Who’s assisting in deciding whether to dump Konecny or Ristolainen, or the overall vision of this team? Now, they can pretend Jones is a PR man, and while he may not hold the day to day sway of other team presidents around the league, it is an impossibility that he is not factoring in on major decisions in an advisory role.

Who is everyone else?

Toronto and Edmonton are the two skill teams still in the playoffs.

The others are basically a mixture of skill and muckers, with a lot of goals coming from players crashing the blue paint and defensemen attacking the O-zone - how is that so different from Torts?

What I see are a lot of physical forwards who have good hands in the dirty areas, making plays.
Most of these teams have maybe 1-2 "figure skater" play makers.
I've seen a lot of forechecking and low to high cycling.

Briere won't make it 5 years if things are stagnant.

Doesn't mean they have to win right away, but after 3 years, if the team isn't younger and a lot more talented, I'm sure Hilferty will move on. You don't have to be a hockey genius to see if the product is improved, and improved in the "right" (i.e. building for the long-term) way.

Other teams? It was other team, singular. You mean Montreal, and their interest in him was based on his ability to speak French.
Seriously? You think they wanted him because he can speak French? I guess there are organizations willing to make even dumber decisions than we are.

Great post. But then again Masai Ujiri is a great, visionary president and Bobby Webster a great GM.

The problem the Flyers had, which ruined the search process, is that they actually wanted to keep Tortorella involved with the team. I read Hilferty's 'The Standard' crap and threw up a little in my mouth. How can anyone take anything that vainglorious jackass Tortorella says seriously? He's as full of crap as AV. Hard to believe but they do.

Chuckles had to go, because the fanbase was about to lynch him, so they promote his protege, Briere, on the condition he keeps Torts. And they find a stooge in the broadcast booth as President on the condition he keeps the GM and Coach.

This is BACKWARDS to how good organizations are built. You clean house, hire a President of Hockey Ops and he or she hires a GM, who hires a Coach and his staff.

The Flyers could not undergo a legitimate search for Pres or GM. If interviewed, Pronger (for example) would likely say, "I'll take the job, but Torts has to go, and so does Briere, but we may find a role for him under my GM." To which the Flyers would balk and the better candidates all walked away in this way.

Finally, they said, 'who do we already have under contract we can make the President?' Jonesy? Perfect!

What steps have been taken? What standard has been set? To bow down to Tortorella?

Throw a bunch of buzzwords together and make statements about how things are going to improve simply because in the back of their head they think they can’t get any worse and they’re “owed” it.

I am going to die of laughter if Briere's first Free Agent signing is his son, who just got kicked off his college team for throwing a wheelchair down the stairs!

Okay, but you’re ignoring the more pertinent part. Who determines Briere’s firing? Who determines his successor? Who determines Keith Jones is a boon or drag to the front office?

This power structure looks ready to collapse in on itself with a stiff breeze. Briere’s boss is a guy who only got the position because he’s content with not having a major day-to-day say in operations, content with the current coach, content with the new GM (who got the job because he too is content with the coach) — and yet he has the power to fire all of them? Ass backwards doesn’t begin to describe this.

Carolina, NJ. I'm sure that was just an honest slip of the memory.

It was posted by the official flyers account but written by Brian smith

Ok, I'm more certain than ever the advisors get to voice their desires and are taken seriously. Just wrote this out of the blue after cementing a power structure that ensures nobody will remove them and there's nobody between them and Briere, huh?

I would be embarrassed to put my name on a stupid canned statement like that.

Hilferty. He's the CEO. Same way the "owner" always makes the big decisions, like firing a coach with term on his contract.

A President/GM's authority is derived from an owner's grant, when the owner loses confidence, that authority evaporates. Howie may run the Eagles, but only so long as he maintains Lurie's confidence in him.

If Hilferty decides it isn't working, then he may decide to search for a strong President and clean house. Or just replace Briere/Jones/Torts. It's always going to be his call.
