Brière may be surprisingly good, but the org has eliminated any checks and balances, any contingencies, any training wheels. He is tasked with adding talent without the necessary assets, building a roster that meets the coach's demands, and doing something the franchise hasn't done in more than a decade with the same blunt instruments tugging on the steering wheel. And that is assuming he isn't in lockstep with these voice who have brought us to the pit of despair in the first place.

I think if Briere has the ability to be surprisingly good then he would have ideas the team finds intolerable, and he wouldn't be GM

There are no checks and balances unless you want to go back to "consensus decision making" and we know how THAT turned out.

If a President has the authority to "check" Briere, he's the de facto GM and either you're back to consensus or organizational infighting, sniping and leaks to the media.

Briere will sink or swim on his own merits.
If they hired a strong President, he'd have no checks on his authority. Same issue.
For this to work, someone has to make the tough decisions and take responsibility for them.

Here is my only positive takeaway....I like Briere. And ultimately his trades and signings will dictate how he does on his job. If he does dumb shit like Fletch....like pay to remove Ghost only to pay heavily for Risto as his replacement, then his fate is sealed.

But if he comes in and replicates "some" Hextall moves like getting a 3rd for Rinaldo, 3rd for McGinn, etc... then I will be at least impressed in getting good value for trash. He can dictate his outcome. Of course other GM's might try and take advantage if this rookie GM and look who Danny has surrounding him to bounce things off of. Not good.

Either way, not paying for NHL Center Ice to watch this team next year.

Honest question, curious why you or others like briere? What are you basing that on?

Is Uncle Fester still on the team?

Of course. He's still VP. He's Briere's boss. Also, Briere is his boss. The old power structure was based on the Fletcher/Flahr dynamic and nobody thought to update it or maybe, just maybe, for the first time in years, hire at least one full time VP. They want as few voices in the building as possible. Wouldn't want to risk the advisors being drowned out.

Brière is sinking or swimming with a couple of cinder block floaties. I am looking for someone who hasn't been part of the past decade of awfulness to be a sounding board to him and perhaps point out some potential flaws in a plan. That person may be Tortorella, but I doubt his acumen in the new NHL, given how he aspired to the BSB mentality before he was even hired.

One valuable check/balance is the analytics department, who have not been mentioned at all in this Orange is the New Failure campaign. It would be helpful to hear what level of contribution they are expected to have moving forward.

Just based on his play on the ice...feisty despite being small and also how he came scross in interviews. So very little really....just how I feel about him. It means nothing going forward as him as GM. His moves/trades will dictate how I will feel about him going forward.

Speaking for myself: Mere excitement of Briere not being Fletcher or Hextall, Briere being one of my favorite Flyers of all time, and Briere essentially being a "wildcard" due to an unknown track record allows for dreams of optimism.

He's so far said the right things. He's said the word "rebuild" and refused to say the advisors would have a role moving forward. For Day 1, I am cautiously optimistic.
