Imagine a "long and exhaustive search process of a top level hockey executive" that ends with hiring a long term TV personality with no executive past.

Oh wait. You dont have to imagine.

I like how they aren't even looking for a new VP and demoting Flahr. Just as little change as possible. They're sticking Briere in the Fletcher spot, shoving the president position aside, and ensuring things exist as they always have, aside from the Hextall pause.

If you could not say these things and insteady stay classy and not ruin it for everyone, that would be great

The only more laughable executive search in this city in the past decade is Jerry Colangelo doing an 'exhaustive' search and deciding his kid was the best GM candidate available.

Self fellating. Entitlement. Stolen valor. Misplaced sense of self righteousness.
the best part of that sign is the "this is a new era of hockey"... they forgot to add " but we are still playing old school hard nose hockey"..

#sigh

Is there anyone with a functioning brain that can come up with one positive thing coming from Jonesy being president of hockey operations?
Risto extended till retirement..

beaf***ingFlyer baby...🤣

The amount of times I’ve seen people say Jones has a good hockey mind or knows the game today has me convinced that nobody has had their TV sound on during games.

This guy is literally one of the dumbest human beings I’ve ever heard speak. His favorite player is Ristolainen, he’s obsessed with every horrible goon, and he absolutely hates guys like Sanheim/Ghost/Frost. He refused to criticize anyone Fletcher added or Fletcher himself and exclusively scapegoated the skill players or youth.

He’s not a good guy, he’s not a good mind, he’s a piece of shit.

I assure everyone, it is not a coincidence that

1) The new president will not have any power to remove the advisors from Hockey Ops, and
2) The new president is the last person who would ever even dream of doing so anyway.

Nothing has changed. Hilferty is more of the same. Literally, even more of the same since those people are all his old heroes and he's starstruck by them based on his revolting sycophancy in every public statement. He always brings them up. Always.
memer that time they fired Fletch and called it a day on "rebuilding for the new Era..

hahaaa good times..

and people wonder why we have ZERO faith in this Org.

No one thinks Brendan Shanahan is the de facto GM in Toronto. He's just Kyle Dubas' boss. Kyle Dubas makes the decisions. Brendan Shanahan holds him accountable in executing the organization's plan.

That is the structure we should have been going with to usher in a new era. Instead we made the President a glorified spokesperson.
What did Brian Burke do in Pittsburgh?

Briere & Torts are in charge of personnel.

The President of Hockey Ops isn’t overruling them.

Some fantasized about it. Not happening.

Jones changes absolutely nothing.
The plan was already decided upon, he's just the PR guy.

Problem is until June, we have no idea what moves they're gonna make.
Hard to judge Briere one way or another until he has a half dozen deals under his belt and a draft or two.

There's an amount of uncertainty with the both Danny B and Jonesy. We don't know how they are going to do, and we don't know who really has the most control. So with the uncertainty, there is technically a non-zero chance that this hiring can be a good hiring.

HOWEVER, this is still a same-as-it-ever-was situation. Just keep hiring people with connections to the old guard, and don't look outside of the organization for help. How many times do you need to watch them do the same thing with zero results? It makes me crazy.

What does Shanahan actually do then?
What does it mean "hold him accountable?"

"In the 2014-15 season, his first full season in charge, Shanahan made the decision to initiate a long-term, "scorched-earth" rebuild, which he started by firing head coach Randy Carlyle". On April 12, 2015, Shanahan fired Horachek and the rest of the coaching staff, in addition to GM Dave Nonis and several members of the team's scouting staff.

On May 20, 2015, the Maple Leafs announced the hiring of Mike Babcock as the team's new head coach. Shanahan (along with acting GM's Kyle Dubas and Mark Hunter) drafted Mitch Marner 4th overall in the 2015 draft and traded forward Phil Kessel, to the Pittsburgh Penguins. On July 24, 2015, the Maple Leafs hired Lou Lamoriello as GM. At the end of the 2017-18 season, Lamoriello left and assistant GM Kyle Dubas, Shanahan's first major hire, was promoted to replace him.

So Shanahan calls the shots, and Dubas is his lackey.
He's not a passive President, letting his GM make decisions and giving him an annual review.

Did Pittsburgh use the same power structure? I don't know. Not that it matters anyway, Burke is a fossil bound for failure with idiot Hextall under his wing.

No one is saying the PoHO should be overruling Briere. PoHO doesn't need veto power over the GM's every decision, but it does need to have authority if/when things go south.

Just because it is "not happening" doesn't mean it shouldn't be happening.

I don't know what Shanahan does on a daily basis, but I'm sure he has Hockey Ops input greater than what Jones has been allotted. He likely serves as a Senior Advisor for the GM's grand vision of things, but also serves as the GM's boss to make sure things are executed correctly. Not as a business liaison like Jones.

All the "shots" you listed of Shanahan calling were from the period in between Nonis getting fired and Lamoriello getting hired. There was no GM. And it's been 8 years since Shanahan was calling roster shots like that.

Nobody has fantasized about that. As I keep having to point out, it isn't possible to defend the team on its own merits so this is what you have to do. You have to make up these strawmen to tear down, because all criticism of the team is valid.
