You mean like when we traded Bob to make it easier on Bryz?

Briere has NEVER been a real GM. Why the f*** wouldn’t you be looking to get some experience in here!? You all are right. Nothing changes till Comcast is gone.
All the "real GM" hires would be retreads. We've tried that, we've also tried novices.
Zito and Sakic weren't "real GMs" when they were hired.
Seems it's less about formal experience and more about finding someone who's smart.
We'll find out if Briere is "smart."

Maybe I’ll go stand by a construction site today, and cheer them on.

Wearing orange, and working their ass off too.
You're likely to easily get access to "games" because PA is generational at not finishing construction projects.

I'll say this...

IF Keith Jones is purely there for culture & to be a good mouthpiece to the public, he can do those things I'm sure. All a matter of if you believe in the culture he'll help instill. This last regime clearly didn't understand the fan base, so perhaps Jonesy can *at least* get that correct.

However, if he is meant to create some fantastical brilliant moves to change how we acquire/sell players & build a team, I would not be very happy about this right now. New mindset is needed on that front.

He wouldn’t touch it unless he really wants to help and thinks he can make a difference. This isn’t a retirement job, this is a s**t storm that he’s walking into. And he knows it. He’s too smart not to know this is a mess

This isn't about making a difference. It's a huge pay raise for a glorified PR position and it gives him several years of stealing money from Comcrap, just like so many others have done since Snider died.

I don't care what Jonesy thinks of it - people will do a lot for a good salary.

I'm only interested in what they think he can/will do for them.

Some will argue this, but in a year John Tortorella became the most powerful man in the organization.

That’s downright hilarious. They will cater to Torts with every move, even a blind man could see that.
I think it's more a matter of Briere and Torts being on the same page.

I don't think Torts wants to sit in the video room for hours on end with scouts reviewing prospects.
Rather, he's discussed with Briere the kind of team he wants to build and they've come to a meeting of minds. First, who to subtract, then what kind of players they want to add.

My guess:
1) get younger and faster, Torts likes speed, but only paired with intangibles.
2) get players with high IQs and sound fundamentals, high motors and strong work ethic - intangibles matter
3) build from the bottom up, no quick fixes, no declaring "mission accomplished." Stay out of the big money FA market until the rebuild is complete - don't be fooled if you make the playoffs early.

They won't "tank," but if shedding veterans and adding youth ends up with them drafting high the next couple years, they won't apologize either. Torts signaled early that this was going to be a 4-5 year process, not a quick fix. He's seen what happens when the GM prematurely ends a rebuild.

The reason Jones doesn't matter is it's obvious that Hilferty has bought into this strategy so it didn't matter who they hired as President, the template for the next few years is set.

The question is whether Briere can effectively implement this strategy.

The question is whether Briere can effectively implement this strategy.

Tortorella told us he wants to pursue 10 goal PK specialists instead of talent. If Briere agrees then the team is f***ed.

Tortorella was given opportunities to get younger and faster and he refused them. Given many chances to develop young players, he refused to do that too. His refusal to work with them may have helped because they could be left to their own devices rather than the team's, but he hates working with young players. That's what he said, and players confirm he doesn't bother. He's not who you think he is.

Briere cannot effectively implement this strategy. He has no idea what he's doing. He refused to take the job only a few months ago because of that.

Hilferty is an ignorant moron who is clearly taken in by the likes of Clarke, so any strategy he thinks is good cannot actually be.

Sakic actually came in above the level and worked his way down. He was an alternate governor, then VP of hockey ops who named himself GM.

Sakic also embraces hockey ideas that the Flyers despise. It stands to reason Briere does not embrace those ideas, but is more in line with what the Flyers love. Which is terrible.

It has been firmly proven that everything the Flyers think is good is bad. Everything they think is bad is good.

Every single Comcast executive is going to be just like Scott and Hilferty. You have to be like that to climb that high in that shitty company. The Flyers are doomed until they are sold, which might never happen for all we know.

Nothing changes until they are sold. Nothing. This team has ensured, has committed to keeping the Flyer family in power.

From a personal standpoint I won’t obviously cheer for it, but every time one of these alumni/old school fans die off. It’s a good day for the Philadelphia Flyers. That’s the fix here. Father Time.

That’s morbid, and sad as f***.

Nobody truly knows. It is right to assume they are wrong until they prove they do literally anything correctly.

I said this in another thread last night (you saw it), the Flyers are underwater and I will reach my hand out when they prove they’re not drowning.

I'm not disagreeing with you. But I think most posters are looking at it from what they want, instead of Hilferty's perspective.

Hilerty's perspective is Torts and Briere are in charge.

I agree with Hilferty. I don't want Doug Wilson or Scott Mellanby as the de facto GM. I want Torts and Briere making decisions.
Honest to God, my biggest reason for not liking this decision is the way torts talks and explains himself and his thoughts on the game today, he's stated several times, he doesn't like overly skilled players, he prefers grinders and thats all fine and well, you do need some players who can do some work in the dirty areas, but you're not winning without skill and creativity, you need skill and to take chances to create offense, can't just skate it in, shoot and score and be effective, can't really win with a dump and chase method, you give up the puck entirely to much, you need a solid mix of skill and dirty work, but torts makes people believe he's incapable of incorporating that kind of system, because of the shit he says and does, now I get it, you want players to play responsible, you want solid effort, you want 2 way play, but like I said you need skill, it's a different league completely since he's won a cup, it's a different league from when Jones played, hell it's even vastly different since briere's last game, there is really no reason for Deslauriers type of player in this league, if he was more like a 4th liner of the kings cup days that's different, they were physical and sound defensively, but he's not that, now I give credit where credit is due, he's made a believer out of me with Tippett, everyone knows I hated him since he was traded for giroux, because I thought he was a big fat bust, but I've been wrong, and I'll admit I was wrong if these guys build a proper team, but with the things they say and do, it's extremely hard to get behind them, because it really seems like the game has passed them bye, there I zero reason for an enforcer to be an 82 game staple for a team in this day and age when fighting has started going the way of the dodo birds

I'm not looking at fighting or arguing about it, but if you're wondering why so many are against what's happening this is why, they also say they have a plan, but so did the last group, and there weren't any, it seems like they're hoping for a miracle like drafting the next giroux with a middle to late pick to change their fortune

At this point they're not coming above water until their corpse bloats until they float.

Unfortunately the Flyers are a cult. So I don’t think that culture necessary goes away with new ownership.
