Yikes, Anton Stralman played top 4 minutes for the 1st time in his career this year. He's a good player and a board favorite, but I don't think he does nearly as well without Staal.

Not opposed to trading Staal, but it isn't exactly like top 4 D grows on trees.

I don't know if anyone has noticed or not outside of the advanced stat guys, but JMoore was sheltered like Matt Gilroy in the playoffs. Team did just fine with Del Zotto replacing Staal when Staal was injured, but JMoore has not exactly proven that he can do that.

I don't think Stralman>Staal, nor do I think Stralman at $4>Return on Staal.

Brady Skjei hasn't played a single pro game. Conor Allen (who I think is better an JMoore) only played 3 NHL games. You don't trade capable defensemen unless you have a replacement.

This trade Staal talk is reminiscent of the trade Hagelin talk earlier this year until people actually realized how valuable a Hagelin can be in the playoffs. But then again I can totally see the frustration with Staal's lack of puck skills and his lack of contribution in the last 5-8 games causing trending opinion on this board.

What world are you living in where Stralman hasn't played top four minutes before this year? He's been in our top four basically since we got him. He's our most consistent defenseman. He's easily our number two at this point. The quickest way to remove this team from serious contention is to let Stralman walk.

Staal could net us a pretty penny, so in that regard keep Stralman.

But if we're not considering anything but Staal v Stralman, you're insane to keep Stralman as good as he is.

Stralman will end up only being about a mil cheaper once they both get their new contracts, and I'd absolutely miss having Stralman and he's finally getting the recognition he deserves, but Staal is a number one shutdown guy that I would say is worth the extra 1-1.5mil.

All that being said, the more realistic situation is buying out Richards, re-signing Stralman and trading Staal for a center

I would keep both Staal and Strålman and trade Girardi. Girardi is more suitable to a grinding team, not a puck possession team. He can't play to his strengths under AV as he did under Torts. He's more valuable for other teams than NYR. He is one of our worst puck movers and too one dimensional.

This has nothing to do with last night, just because Girardi had a weak game, mind you.

Unfortunately that's not an option since Sather gifted him a combined NMC (now through first three years of deal) and NTC (last three years of deal). I have a really hard time believing he'd waive the clause under any condition see as he seems to have made his life here in New York.

I doubt management would look to move him anyway. He has the hitting and shotblocking qualities fans love even though he lacks the mobility and puck moving skills necessary to thrive in Vigneault's system. It's very telling that the Rangers' possession numbers go through the roof whenever Stralman slides into Girardi's spot next to McDonagh.

Its more about the trade value Staal has. Stralman replaces Staal for me. Staal garners significant trade value and can be a major piece in bringing in what we really need which is help up the middle. IT just makes the most sense from an organizational standpoint.

Why do people think I want to trade Girardi because of a bad series? I started the "Trade Callahan and Girardi"-bandwagon in the summer of 2013. And this entire season has been one long confirmation of the reasons why I wanted to do that. I get that every poster can't keep track of what every other poster wants/thinks about the team, but it isn't like there hasn't been any calls for a Girardi trade before the playoffs.

At least we traded Cally.

I would like to keep both

This is the most hockey Staal has played since probably 2011. He played pretty awful against MTL but he's been solid against LA. If we're just living in the moment than yes you trade Staal and keep Stralman but a couple weeks ago people wanted to use the buyout on Nash instead of Richards so....

I hope no one was listening to those people at the time!

We shouldn't trade Nash, much less buy him out!

Staal. Rebounded nicely from a career-threatening injury and I think he improves next season as he enters the prime of his career. Think he helps make that pairing what it is and it's tougher to find a Staal than it is a Stralman. Said another way, do your best to keep your best player.

heres my take on the D right now and projecting to camp next fall.

staal needs to be moved at the draft. add a first rounder and a player or a trade for an nhl ready swift skating creative centerman. staal has value and will return something that can address a huge need. i think we have adequate skill at D to find a pmd in house.

mcd. left. hes a true #1 d. sublime skills. 3o min guy. future captain. hes got a norris trophy game.

girardi. right. signed extension, going no where. can play first pair minutes. steady if unspectacular.

stralman. right. needs to be extended. add years to the deal and wrap him up. 2 way skills. steady. has untapped offensive potential. another prototypical av type dman.

staal. left. banged up. first pair guy when healthy. eye and concussion issues. his value isnt going to get any higher. 1 yr left on his deal. will be expensive. draft day deal for a 1st rounder and a player.

kleiner. right. cap friendly contract. plays a steady, controlled defense first game. has stepped up in the playoffs. physical guy who can play top 4 mins in a pinch. good partner for an off. type guy.

moore. left. RFA. smooth skater with a good hard shot. great size. showing signs of being that offensive guy we lack. defensively sketchy at times but his skating and ability to push puck gives him a spot. keeper.

allen. left. can play both sides and shows an offensive flair. good size. good passer and confident with the puck. defensively adequate. could earn a spot.

diaz. right. smooth offensive guy who sates well and can play the pp. might be a victim of numbers game with all the dmen we have. not real big and plays rather small.

mcilrath. right. big kid. 6'5 225. physically imposing player with a mean streak. improved skating and 2 way play. offensively limited but has a big shot. defensively adequate but developing steadily.

mcd/stralman

moore/girardi

allen/klein

mcilrath

good balance here. offensive guys are lefties. righties are more defensive.

This.

Only reason to trade Staal is to get a Pavelski or Jeff Skinner plus a 1st coming back to us.

I never saw a player who skates well in Diaz. He's a pretty poor skater for his size IMO, and it diminishes his overall game greatly.

He's pretty terrible, I wouldn't want to re-sign him.

THIS...

If we're able to get a serious contending piece, you trade Staal.

Otherwise, you trade the rights to Stralman for another player/pick

I like those D Pairings...

Staal alone doesn't land Pavelski or Skinner with a 1st as well.

If Staal does become the odd man out I'd be happy with a 1 for 1 swap on those deals. Skinner is definitely more valuable to Carolina and the Rangers than Staal. He'd be a perfect fit here.

If we could get Skinner for Staal straight up I take that deal and run away laughing. Can't imagine Carolina going for it at all though.

The only scenario I see that working is if we convince Francis that assembling all the Staals will unlock the secret Staal powers which double the ability of each brother. So who is going to slip Ron some acid, any volunteers?

lets say adequate skater. he does move pretty well and i never thought skating was an issue with him.

i wouldnt resign him either to be honest. like i said, numbers game casualty. not a huge fan.

Voted Stralman. I think signing him is a no-brainer. He has improved every single season, and also stepped up big time come playoffs three years in a row. You just don't let a guy like that walk. That is piss poor asset management, IMO. I'm pretty sure he can be signed for under 4 million. If rumors are true he wants term.

I'd look to trade Staal and I'd pull the trigger if offers are ok. I don't really think Sather would be looking to add picks though. He's in win now mode, why would he? If I'm in his shoes I'd try to add a cost controlled fairly young C and a left handed D. If a pick can be had as well, that's great, but filling several holes on the roster while getting cap relief might be the best way to go.

My first choice would be to try and keep them both. But get Stralman a contract first. Teams are allowed to be over the cap during summer, and if cap gets tight you can deal with that later.

Agreed. We are more likely getting a young, promising C and a lesser d-man, IMO.
