Stralman cant score if his life depended on it. He is terrible offensively. Staal isn't any better, but Stralman missed so many opportunities throughout the season.

Stralman doesn't put up points, but his puck moving skills ensure that we spend way more time in the offensive zone when he's on the ice than when anyone else is. Indirectly, he's a huge boost to our offense.

Correct. It amazes me that so many people don't get this. We are playing a system based on posession, he is one of the best in the league when it comes to that. That is why he should be resigned and kept over Staal, Girardi, Moore and Klein IF moves have to be made.

Stralman is much better at this point. Staal isn't anywhere near himself 2 years ago.

Staal looked god-awful in the last two rounds. Everytime he got the puck my pace quickened for fear of him making another mishandle with the puck.

Stralman is a rock defensively but don't be mistaken he is not merely a stay at home defenseman. He may not have put up a respectable amount of points this year, but his puck movement in the offensive zone is second only to McDonagh in my opinion.

Ranking of defenseman in terms of defense for playoffs:

1) Stralman
2) McDonagh
3) Moore
4) Klein

5) Girardi
6) Staal

1) McDonagh

And the rest.

wow you guys are crazy.. i think we already have stralmans replacement in klein.. i think they are similar players.. and i honestly think Moore can grow into a Staal role eventually..

id take staal any day of the week over stralamn.. no way i sign him unless he takes a huge discount.. becuase noway do i become the nuks and have 30m tied into defense...

Stralman, to me, is a better all-around player than Staal. I've thought that for awhile and I will continue to think so.

People get all riled up about Staal because he has these games where he looks like Shea Weber but think about it: how often do we see these games? Less and less as the seasons pass and less and less as within each season as the games get more important.

Staal was great against Pittsburgh, bad against Montreal, and absolute black plague against LA. Progressively worse. Stralman got progressively better.

Staal was our best defensemen in the first two rounds but I guess since the next two rounds are the freshest that's what everyone will remember. He is one of the reasons we even made it to the ECF when McDonagh was playing like crap.

This is very true. To tell you the truth though, I wouldn't be upset if NY could keep Stralman under $5M cap hit and then move Staal(who I think will be looking for 5.5+ on next contract) for assets. I don't think they are that far apart as players on the ice, but Staal has a name that can bring something nice back.

John Moore is only getting better with maturity and I felt he was one of the better defensemen for NY in the SCF's. That, and the trade for Klein, gives this team some flexibility in this situation. Even if McIlrath, Allen or Bodi aren't NHL ready for next season, you can plug a vet in the 3rd pairing or keep Diaz/Falk for that purpose.

It's a toss up for me. If the return was right for Staal and contract right for Stralman, I wouldn't be upset with that move.

What am I missing here? Why is Staal the new whipping boy who everyone wants to trade? He was beastly for a good part of the post season and was rock steady from the mid point of the season...This is a guy we will miss if dealt

I think it's cause we realize Staal could be a valuable piece to get a center like ROR in here.

Keep both, trade Girardi, he's getting older, slower and still is a liability at times whenever he has the puck on his stick

Girardi isn't going anywhere:

Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun

Further to @DarrenDreger, Girardi deal includes full NMC in first 3 yrs and modified NTC in final 3.

Doesn't mean anything, If Sather asks Dan what teams he would waive his NMC clause it can be done, nobody except for soon to be amnestied Brad Richards is untraceable on this team

I want to say Staal to make sense to myself considering his long term contribution to the team and the fact that he is already signed, but since Stralman played fairly well in the range of most fans short term memory banks, I went with the popular vote.

Or you could go with the large amount of data that backs up Stralman as better than both Staal and Girardi:

Quote from first article:

McDonagh’s and Staal's numbers were pretty much what I expected, versatile players that perform at a consistent level in every situation.

It does say that Girardi's play hasn't been as good as it was in the past, but he's under contract, and this thread is about choosing between Staal and Stralman.

I could also explain how the second article that was linked was a good example of a recency bias for a player in a contract year.

The headline was grabbing though.

Look at what happens when Stralman shares the ice with his teammates:

He makes everyone better. As good as Staal has been, Stralman is clearly superior.
