IMHO keeping Stralman over Staal is absurd.
18 months ago Stralman couldnt find work
He's been great alongside Staal this spring, but Staal's been great consistently when healthy.
I believe Staal should get the C
and if Stralman needs to get $4M, thank you for efforts and good luck

For the play he brings, $4M is as fair price. He's proven he can step up his game in the playoffs.

It comes down to price, really. I think everyone would want to keep both.

Moore in the top 4 is a disaster.

based upon what exactly ?

i think this kid gets a raw deal around here. people continue to murder him for no good reason. his improvement has been obvious. his d game is still inconsistent but his offense negates much if his defensive weakness.

74 4 11 15 7 25 0 0 2 115

his regular season line is decent and hes+ 2 in 20 playoff games as well.

he was 2nd on the team in shots by a defensman. he plays a 2 way game and hes not a liability.

playing along side a stay at home dan girardi (like kevin klein this season) would allow him to push the puck which is something this team desperately needs to generate chances. he adds a dimension we lack.

and more importantly, i think av trusts and likes his game.

im fairly certain we wont be adding another lefty dman if we move staal. john moore has taken a regular shift all season and in the playoffs. hes earned a shot to play more minutes.

What world are you living in where Stralman hasn't played top four minutes before this year? He's been in our top four basically since we got him. He's our most consistent defenseman. He's easily our number two at this point. The quickest way to remove this team from serious contention is to let Stralman walk.

Feel free to back to Dec 2012 and even last season when he was clearly no 5 in minutes played. What world am I living in?

One of objective reality where my memory spans further than last week.

Can we trade Klein for a 3rd or something and just put McIlrath into the lineup? Stralsy is too good to just let walk.

That's what i'd do if this was EHM. ;)

McIlrath has done nothing to earn an NHL spot.

People aren't thinking about this correctly IMO.

Staal

or

Stralman + Assets recouped from trading Staal

The poll is very subjective. I chose to consider which player I'd rather see on the Rangers and ignore all else, because the poll didn't specify.

Where's the "Trade Nash and Keep Both" option? :sarcasm:
No sarcasm there, that's just simple intelligence.

I don't disagree Stralman has earned good money, but the damn Cap, plus other teams' too-high offers to Stralman and likely Boyle, are gonna force more changes than we'd like.

I'd agree with the Trade Nash approach if it were feasible, but he has the no-trade and he'll be very picky if he approves at all. AND the other team will need to send salary back

If we can get McGinn + 1st for Staal and a prospect (or some iteration) I make that deal and resign Stralman in a heartbeat. Contingent upon Stralman accepting no more than $4M per

This is what teams have to do in the salary cap era.

McI might not be a very good 3rd pairing NHL d-man right now, but keeping Staal and Stralman instead of Staal OR Stralman makes that tolerable.

I forgot about Del Zotto, but he spent a ton of time on the powerplay. He and Stralman shouldered roughly the same even strength responsibilities. Plus, Staal was hurt for more than half of last season plus the playoffs and Stralman played in the top four during that entire stretch.

Because this entire season he played the weakest opposition yet was still a net negative on the ice.

He's been better in the playoffs, playing much more selective minutes against meh competition, but he would not handle a second pairing role very well judging by his play this regular season.

Maybe he could in the future, but letting Staal go and putting J. Moore against Middle 6 competition right now is a no go if we want to compete next year.

Why is everyone so obsessed with getting McGinn? I'd hope for more than McGinn as far as NHL talent coming back if we dealt Staal.

If I had to choose Staal. I believe he will be better going forward. Then again Stral is a RD and it's arguable he's just as good overall right now. In the end the team absolutely needs to re-sign both

Staal, and it's not close. Trading Staal only makes sense if a stud forward comes back. And in that case, that means John Moore getting bumped to the Top 4. I don't even want John Moore in the Top 6, letalone Top 4.

If it has to be a choice, and I'm not positive it is, let Stralman walk. Not much will be lost with Klein as a replacement. I really believe that.

Do the Staal people actually think he's the same guy he was in 2010-11? He's not. He goes through the occasional high level stretch, but his play is almost always fluctuating.

The best move would be to re-sign Stralman and let Staal play out his walk year before reexamining things. We have guys who may be ready to step in on the left side by then in Allen and Bodie. Plus, Skjei may be only a half season or so away at that point. Three seasons of NCAA hockey plus half a year in Hartford was all it took McDonagh to get ready.
