In a world where every time there is a goal against the people of HFBoards threaten to turn off their TVs and start rioting, these same people clamor for Dylan McIlrath to enter the lineup, eeeeeven though his defensive acumen is extremely raw, just because he has a reputation of pounding on the opposition, eeeeeeven though he fights to a draw most of the time all the while while ignoring that fighting in meaningful playoff games is extinct. Serenity Now folks.

...Or maybe keeping two good defensemen like Stralman and Staal is important, even if calling in a potentially unready young player who our D coach in Hartford says will be called up next season.

We really shouldn't have extended Girardi. But short of that, we need to do whatever it takes to keep Stralman. He's perfect for AV's system and easily our best right handed defenseman at this point. I don't see us contending for the cup in Hank's remaining prime years without Stralman on the roster.

Staal for sure. Stralman will go and they will sign dan Boyle for the pp like it or not

Stralman is the perfect fit for this team and system. Staal is no slouch and better than Girardi for this team, but G is now locked in and brings a unique element to the D corp despite his lack of foot speed. When you basically have 3 #1 pairing defensemen eventually you have to get rid of 1. I think Staal is the odd man out by default due to cap reasons. If Stralman is asking for 4.5+mil then Staal is getting 6+mil. Is it worth paying a guy on your second pair 6+mil?

It's a gamble to not keep this D corp together, but eventually all good teams run in to cap issues because everyone wants to get paid. This season and next are the toughest contract and trade decisions this franchise has had to make in a long time. We can only hope whatever they decide ends up being the right move down the line.

You're wrong. I know that seems like the Ranger thing to do so it is your default assumption, but that is not happening.

Some short sighted memory here for sure. We would never get past Pittsbourgh without Staal. What happend from there though I can't even guess.

Conditioning? THis is is first full season in a couple of years i think, add in the deep playoff run, maybe he's outta steam?

That's what I've been thinking as well. This is the most hockey he's played since the 2010-11 season. His body may not be used to the grind.

Stralman only because I think the return would be better for the team if we moved Staal and re-signed Stralman.

Unfortunately "why not both?" does not apply here. Both are great defensemen.

The Lawman has been stellar through the playoffs. Staal has been pretty damn good overall as well and has rebounded nicely from his eye injury. Tough call.

Breaks my heart that it is very likely one will not be on the team this time next year.

If they're not then whoever replaced him has made a hell of a job getting us to the finals! :handclap:

That being said, I rather keep lawman, and yes it is very sad one of them probably has to depart the team

Chose Stralman. Injuries, money, and trade value are factors for me. Rather sign Stralman for less money and get a nice return for Staal, than sign Staal to a bigger contract and lose Stralman for nothing. Stralman's puck-moving skills are essential in this system.

Staal. Before his injuries he was our top defenseman. Now McD has stepped into that role but it doesn't diminish what Staal brings to the team. Stralman has been great this year, especially in the playoffs but is it that he has found another level under AV or is there a reason he walked from Columbus and NJ didn't sign him?

I like Anton a lot but I think he's going to command too much for us to fit him under the cap because I don't think Staal is going anywhere.

Staal has lost a lot in his skating compared to a few years ago and at one point it looked like he was developing some offense which is now completely gone. He has suffered some unfortunate injuries which I'm sure have something to do with his decline in ability.

Stralman is a better skater and a better passer including much better breaking out of his own end skating/passing the puck. These factors in mind I would pick Stralman of the 2.

Don't think Staal will ever hit his 2011 form again, while Stralman has been getting progressively better to the point where he is clear cut #2 most efficient, if not #1 on the team.

Remember when Klein was just as good as Stralman? Joke of the season.
