I like that we added a RH shot and I think Kapanen actually plays a more physical and pesty game. Hopefully he can develop it more here. I could see him potentially being what people think Tanev provides in the top six.

I think we should go get Sam Bennett on the cheap. lets go get a bunch of skilled pesty players.

(can't believe he was the flames best player these playoffs)

If you ignore the fact that we dealt our best pick in a decade, which could've potentially turned into a franchise cornerstone player for the next 15 years, in addition to one of our best prospects, I guess it's cool that we landed a young, speedy RW with a RH shot. He may or may not work well on Sid's wing, but A. he's not Simon or Sheary, and B. he'll be a great 3rd liner if he doesn't work on Sid's wing.

But, you've gotta ignore that f***ing absurd payment. That's important. Ignore it.

I'm just afraid for the rebuild in 2-3 years it's gonna be a long one

The plan all along should have been a tear down rebuild after Crosby and Malkin leave. There was no way this organization would be able to survive losing those two.

They have 5 years left of Crosby and Malkin, I'd like to see them maximize those years.

Personally, I also think everyone including myself is upset about the 1st being included because we have this impression it COULD turn into a Barzal or Karlsson. But there's a much higher chance that it won't. Also if the following is true then I get why we traded Hallander

Heard this tune before.

Think it's called "The Pittsburgh media conveniently besmirching a player after the fact to make a deal sound better than it is, citing factors that they either dismiss or ignore in other contexts"

Admittedly, it's not a very catchy title.

lol... Pens fans and journos are so super obsessed with skating. It just strikes me as parroting.

This is literally the first I've heard of Hallander's skating being a legit problem. Seems convenient.

Really though.

How often did we hear after last draft that people were making too big a deal out of skating?

Zucker has multiple years on his deal and Pageau was a trade and sign.

And your point is...? Kapanen also has multiple years on his deal. That's my point. You can trade a first and get those kinds of players. Mid tier guys who are top 9 20 goal reasonably young forwards.

Getting anything past that usually requires a heavier investment in picks/prospects or requires that the player you're getting has severe warts (like Kessel).

If JR was intent on moving this pick for a win-now type trade, I don't think he could have done much better than Kapanen.

Also, Kapanen isn't even a UFA at the end of his deal. He will still be an RFA at the end of his current three year deal. That's pretty good flexibility to have for a young scoring forward.

Frankly, I think being 7th in the league is misleading.

100%

This team was not going to make the playoffs without the shutdown - they'd lost 7 of 9 with their only wins against two teams tanking and had a full slate of Metro games to finish the season. They picked up in the bubble right where they left off - a disinterested group that looked like they had no interest in playing with each other or with the coaching staff.

sarcasm is usually meant to be funny

nobody's laughing but you because you're just Fortnite default dancing at everyone for thinking this trade isn't the best ever
UMMMM No I am probably old enough to be your Dad or Grandad

If he can be a guy who really helps drive the bus on the 3rd line, that'd be cool, that might make it worthwhile, but Patric Hornqvist is there. And I doubt Hornqvist is getting moved up to the top 6.

I dunno. Wait and see I guess. I can see your argument but as you say, it's quite a price.

Kapanen doesn't change ought - we're going 7-3 with Letang, Dumo and Pettersson protected (with Marino exempt) already.

I'm not arguing its a good trade or a bad one... I again have to process this and think it over for awhile.

All I'm saying is the team is a lot better now with KK aboard. I know what he brings and I know that much for a fact.

However, the assets used to acquire him... could they have been used better? I feel they could have been... but of course, I don't speak to other GMs to know the trade market.

KK I suspect will float in and out of the top six...

If he plays like he did in 2018-19, JR done real good. However, I doubt that version of KK would be on the block.

He regressed some last season, which is why he was available... so I can't say for sure which is the real KK.

What if Poulin is too impressive in camp to send down? where do we put him? feels like we have so many wingers.

Everyone liked Hallander while simultaneously not knowing a whole lot about him. His highlight tape looked good (as it is supposed to) but it is obvious the scouts feel he would not help this team now or at any point during the Crosby/Malkin era. Same goes for the 15th pick. I get that this is a deep draft but it seems after the first few picks, the rest of the draft prospects will need a few years to develop. That doesnt help right now.

If you wait to build a team that can be good three years from now, you've already wait too long. JR has made some really bad moves...maybe this will be another one. But the attitude from some of you makes me laugh. You legitimately think you know better than the GM and the scouts have no idea what they are doing.

I'd say they have 2-3 years left then Malkin will either be traded or go to the KHL. in two years Crosby will be 35 and Malkin 36. The prime years are gonna and better to just star the rebuild.

Tanev had 171 more hits than Kapanen this season and 48 more blocked shots. They are not the same player.

Hopefully we move out one of Hornqvist or McCann at this point.

I'd be surprised for McCann to stick around, I feel like McCann's money was just given to Kapanen.

I hope they can get another high pick/prospect for McCann, but I think this trade really shows that JR isn't interested in picks and prospects. He wants to win now. So I bet that means we'll see McCann swapped for a defenseman and Murray traded for a 3C.

My guess is GMJR has more moves to make. He certainly has to move JJ and I think Murray and possibly McCann will bring back nice picks. I prefer the Pens keep the pick and add to the prospect pool but that is not where this GM is. He will be gone when the aging stars are gone at least Malkin and Letang so he knows the total rebuild will not be on his watch. I like Kap and his speed skill and those suggesting he is just a 3rd line guy are not correct. No way I wanted domi at 5 million per and suspect attitude. He will play in the top 6 and will add needed speed, moxie and sizzle to the mix. He to me is dynamic enough to emerge as a top 6 guy. Now lets see what things look like as he moves JJ, probably McCann, Murray. Personally I move Horny as well but the NTC is an issue unless it is back to Nashville
Jake Sid Rust or Kap
Zucker Geno Rust or Kap
O'Connor Bjugs Horny
Tanev TB Lafferty
