Is a sick top six. We'll see what else JR does, but that is a top six which has lots of skill and can skate and play north/south hockey.

Yeah, we’re really looking at the bottom 6 and bottom pairing. You might want better in the top 6 and better than Pettersson but it’s more of a depth problem.

They still have Simon and McCann as RFAs, Poulin could push for a spot and the D prospects got a college infusion. They really to figure out the 3C and who gets the pleasure of trying to make JJ look like he once played in the NHL. That’s what JR is probably looking at right now.

I hope this is just the first domino to fall in a grand, Rube Goldberg-esque sequence of events that JR has in store, because... Man, what a shit start to the off-season.

Again, I like Kapanen a lot. I think he's a great pickup for the 3rd line and helps with the speed/skill/depth issue we've been missing. But that is not a guy I think a GM should be paying a premium price for.

So the real question here is how long will the team actually have Kapanen before they trade him for Hagelin or something?

Yeah, I don't know why JR always has to overpay to land someone he likes. I'd hate to have him as my real estate agent. He'd accept the price the seller lists above market value right away instead of negotiating down first.

As a Caps fan i dont like this deal for Pens. They got a good player. Fast skater, can score some goals. Good depth scoring guy.

What do people expect to get with 15th overall? Rental market and off season are completely different.

I hope Caps use their 1st to bump up the roster for before the window is closed for good. Theres plenty of time to suck and rebuild afterwise, we (and Pens) dont really need a middle to late first to do so.

Best case scenario with that first is you find a top6 forward, that ends up being wasted asset on a ruins of a fastly declining dynasty.

Only suprised they didnt use for defence primarily.

Idk if this will be what happens but I do agree, Murray to Calgary in some manner makes way too much sense

Man if they could move Murray for Bennett and McCann out. The top nine would be sick.

Jake - Sid - Kap
Zucker - Malkin - Rust
Poulin - Bennett - Horny

I agree but I do also think one of Rust or Horny will be on the outs as well, just for a locker room shakeup

I can see an argument that Kapanen is just pre-broken out JT Miller :dunno:

By pre-breakout, do you mean pre-50 point seasons, or pre-ppg season?

Either way... I see it a little, given what people are talking about with the physicality, didn't think he was as physical as Miller... in any case, if Kapanen can break out here, then cool beans. Rutherford will look clever.

Someone needs to remind him that he's not going to live or be a GM forever. It's okay to fleece other GM's when you're in your 70's.

Posted this on the main board too...

Crosby is 33, Malkin 34, and Letang 33 (34 next spring). So I get why Rutherford feels like he has to make short-term moves. However, the problem isn't him going all-in with his chips. Rather, it's why he's had to trade so many of these picks and prospects. Trading a 1st for Kapanen wouldn't be as bad if he hadn't had parted with other assets to dump Reaves, Hunwick, and Gudbranson,

EDIT: oh, and this probably means Johnson isn't going anywhere

I said same thing about Fiala when was in Preds, and now he is dominating in Minny.

Speed and suprisingly good physicality is what you get from Kapanen. But IQ is what he is lacking, sometimes big time.

But 44 point player without PP time can be useful tool in right role. He can end up like Fiala or then this can end up really bad for Penguings

KK won't ever, IMHO, be really bad. He is going to be, at a minimum, a 35-40 point guy that makes this team harder to play agt and does all the things Sullivan loves.

However, since he has now cost the team a first rounder in a very good draft, the expectations will be elevated... he will need to become a 50+ point guy who plays full time in the top six or the trade will look like a flop.

I suspect I've seen more of KK than most in this thread, and even with that advantage, I have no clue what to expect from him. That is my issue... it shouldn't be a guessing game for that price... it should be a surefire top sixer.

That's what bothers me, but I'm getting used to JR being a spaz so I've become indifferent the last couple of seasons.
