So we're talking about a 50% chance of a D+2 contribution, versus an immediate contribution (for the next three years at least) from Kapanen.

I don't feel like it's such a bad gamble to make from JR, especially given (as I pointed out) that we were the 7th best team in the league this year. Adding a productive 20 goal two-way player might be enough to push us over the top. We're not some bubble team. We're an elite team still.

Not saying I would have been opposed to keeping the first rounder, but I'm ok with the logic of going all-in given where we stand.

I repeat - if we're going to go all in, don't give that to Kapanen. It's an overpayment for a guy who, no, doesn't push us over the top unless he takes a massive jump. Save those assets for a guy who does.

Frankly, I think being 7th in the league is misleading, and that we're better off taking a slightly longer view and hoping to retool and be more competitive in Years 2 and 3 than Year 1 - in which case, there's a half-decent chance that 15OA/Hallander offer more for their cap hits than Kapanen does over that period - but I can respect thinking different.

I can't respect thinking Kapanen was the best use for 15OA and Hallander (and no cap space taken back). It's an overpayment and one that prevents us from spending on a player who would make a bigger difference. Fingers crossed he takes a big old jump I guess.

Kapanen has been a full time NHLer for 2 years, one year he had 44 points and the other year he was on pace for 43.

I agree that they're basically similar, but just that Domi has a better track record, fits better with Sid.

Guentzel-Crosby-Kapanen
Zucker-Malkin-Rust

Is a sick top six. We'll see what else JR does, but that is a top six which has lots of skill and can skate and play north/south hockey.

Could we, though? To get a player higher quality than Kapanen for a first it usually means you're getting a rental. I don't think you get a player with term better than KK for a mid round first. It's guys like Zucker, Pageau, etc.

Zucker has multiple years on his deal and Pageau was a trade and sign.

lol... Pens fans and journos are so super obsessed with skating. It just strikes me as parroting.

This is literally the first I've heard of Hallander's skating being a legit problem. Seems convenient.
Because the team doesn't run down the guy the HF Boards thinks is Sid 2.0?

Things can change in the post season on a dime. We were embarrassing in the post season before Sullivan took over, and then we rattled off two cups.

You know when things don't change in the post season? When you're a bad team. When you're a good team that is just falling short in the playoffs, things can change. Look at us, look at the Caps. When you're a middling team that makes the playoffs and bows out early, then yeah, things might not change.

We are not that team. We continue to be an elite team in the regular season, and as long as we are that, we have the potential to carry that play into the playoffs. I won't think our days of contention are over until we stop being a dominant regular season team. As long as you can be that, you have a chance to win a cup.
Okay. Whatever.

My wife is a Leaf’s fan so I’ve watched KK a ton.

The issue is if you move a 15th overall in a deep draft and a pretty good prospect, you should land a legit top six guy.

KK isn’t that... he may be, but we should all know by now that Crosby and Malkin don’t create miracles and turn third liners into legit top sizers.

It’s a myth.

I said same thing about Fiala when was in Preds, and now he is dominating in Minny.

Speed and suprisingly good physicality is what you get from Kapanen. But IQ is what he is lacking, sometimes big time.

But 44 point player without PP time can be useful tool in right role. He can end up like Fiala or then this can end up really bad for Penguings

I like that we added a RH shot and I think Kapanen actually plays a more physical and pesty game. Hopefully he can develop it more here. I could see him potentially being what people think Tanev provides in the top six.

i too only live in the past. everything in the present and future is absolutely meaningless and should never ever be taken seriously.
No actually I live in the present. I can't time Travel damnit that would be cool. but keep adding your scintillating takes

If y'all want a laugh, please go through the thread and tell me how hard you laughed once you get to the Stephen A. Smith video :biglaugh:

If Tanev is costing $3.5 million in free agency, you're likely paying Kapanen $5 million in free agency to sign him.

The question isn't Kapanen's vacuum value, but whether he addresses our biggest issues well enough to rationalize emptying the cupboard of our most valuable futures outside of Poulin, who's not on the block.

Is he the answer for our top 6? Does he fix the PP?

Both seem pretty unlikely.

Yeah, I can see that, but Domi is also due to get a big extension and has fewer years of control. I do think Domi has more value than Kapanen, but I'm not sure it's a huge difference.

I don't think I should be mad about paying that much for Kapanen when I view that as "fair price" for Domi. Domi might be better, but it's not a massive difference.
