Landing Rantanen would be epic and inject so much excitement to this fanbase. I'm not sure that we can/should pay the asking price but it would be a lot of fun. Gotta think they'd want Kasper + 1st at minimum.

Rantanen also seems interested in testing UFA which would be my primary hesitation. We can't afford to give up some combination of a 1st/ASP/Kasper/Danielson etc for a guy that doesn't stick around.

especially since it seems like the guy was still pining for Colorado when he was dealt. Carolina has reportedly put nearly $14m a year in front of him and he hasn't signed, so I don't find it likely he'll sign here. I don't think we're at a point where we can throw that sort of package around for a guy who is just going to walk in a few months.

doesn’t the hurricane ownership hate Detroit and vice versa?

When’s the last time a trade happened between the two teams. Can’t recall.

Anyways SY isn’t targeting Rantanen. Would be dope though

I'd be surprised if they don't go out and get Cozens now. Obviously they wouldn't move Kasper for it, but maybe Buffalo will take the first rounder and a roster player at this point.
I'm down (depending on the roster player). Buffalo has only played him 15 min a game over the last 3 games.

I agree

Alot of smoke around Detroit and Cozens and now with Copps season ending injury and the Husso cap dump it just makes too much sense
Problem is teams now know we need to make a move and will try and get more out of us. Then again it is kevyn Adams lol

I dont know if we can pull it off without moving a top end prospect?

1st+ wallinder/plante + veleno + 4th?

I'd say it's not enough but cozens has struggled, I dont know what would be enough to get him

Maybe yzerman just ends up going after a frederic for now and targets a dman? Compher stays 2c for now

Surely yzerman wont wait till next friday to pull some moves

Like he did with carolina??? I'm not paying that price unless he signs that contract as soon as the deal is done

Rather target cozens,Miller etc..

Just seen copp is done, maybe danielson gets a look??
That's what I just said. Why would Yzerman trade for him if he doesn't sign an extension? Why would he sign one before hitting the open market? It's not happening.

Frank Seravalli anytime I listen has no idea about the Wings. Said we don't need a center because we got Compher and Veleno, also said we could use Hronek and shredded that trade.

Yuck.

You shouldn't be surprised if they don't get him.

But I'd maybe be surprised if they don't ask. Unless they already did and Buffalo's price is ungodly.

Yeah, we sure are shedding a tear over drafting ASP lmao.

EK65 on the block officially.
Hell yeah.

Do we need Karlsson and pellika on the same team possibly next season?? They're both similar offensive minded guys

I dont think ASP is on the team next year, at least to start. He is extremely talented but I would imagine he will need some time adjusting to playing on NA ice vs NA pros. Different style of game, although if he has a Raymond like rookie camp.. you cant deny him.

I would love Karlsson on the Wings but I dont see how they make that happen with the glaring need at center currently. It is fun to even think its a possibility right now, would never have imagined that before the Christmas break.

I think theres A chance but if hes here in 2 years then we'll essentially have the same player in the 2nd and 3rd pair on the right side. Guess if we ate half at that point we can flip him

I dont think bruins would flip carlo to us but he could be a good option. I'm sure yzermans making alot of calls now, should be fun soon

More Rantanen details (bolded emphasis mine):

"What is the Hurricanes' plan for Rantanen?
GINO REDA: What’s going on with Mikko Rantanen? Just one goal in his first seven games since the Canes acquired him from the Avs, and, quite frankly, he hasn’t looked anything like the Rantanen we saw while he was wearing an Avs jersey.

To speak to that, here’s Pierre LeBrun.

Pierre, when the Canes made the deal, clearly they wanted to sign him to an eight-year extension. Is that still the plan, or what is the plan now?

PIERRE LeBRUN: Yeah Gino, that is absolutely still the plan.

Let’s back up for a moment, I think part of the unusual layer to all of this is that Mikko Rantanen gets to Carolina after a trade that completely blindsided him, he did not see that coming, and then plays a few games, and then there’s a 4 Nations break where he goes and plays for Finland.

So, it’s not been a sort of a normal adjustment period for a player getting to know his new teammates, I will say that. But in the interim, here’s what I can tell you has happened.

The Hurricanes, during the 4 Nations, had a Zoom call with Rantanen and his agent, Andy Scott of Octagon, where I’m told they really made their strongest pitch yet. A real detailed pitch about what they’re willing to pay him, about their vision for the team, how he fits in, and all of that jazz.

And what has transpired since, is that Mikko Rantanen needs time to mull things over, and not just about the contract itself. As it was explained to me in the last 24 hours, it’s kind of like two phases, Gino.

Phase one is what does Mikko Rantanen ultimately think about Carolina as an organization, as a team, and as a place to live long term. Phase two is “Okay, let’s talk contract.”

I’m told he’s still in phase one. He’s still trying to figure out and get his bearings on if this is where he wants to stay. By the way, the answer to phase one may absolutely be yes, but I’m told he’s not there yet. He just needs more time.

Whether or not he gets through phase one or phase two before March 7, the trade deadline, Gino, is to be determined. And that’s what has fuelled a lot of speculation over the past five, six days.

What will Carolina do if Rantanen is not signed to an extension? I can say this: some people have put the speculation ahead of where things are. I have no evidence that Carolina has actually reached out to a single team to say, “Are you interested in Mikko Rantanen?”

There are teams, for sure, that have phoned to say “Hey, if this guy ends up not signing, let us know if you decide to do something.” Some of that has happened.

But as of today, Gino, the plan from Carolina’s perspective, as far as I can tell, is absolutely to be patient, try and sign him, and to keep him.

And by the way, they may very well keep him as a rental, given that the Eastern Conference is so wide open. I mean, what if they win a Cup with him and he walks? Who cares, right? It will have been worth it.

But the fly in the ointment, as you can imagine, is that they have an owner in Carolina in Tom Dundon who, you know, is a wild card in all of this. If he gets frustrated that he hasn’t been able to sign Rantanen by March 7, who knows what he may or may not instruct his front office to do.

That’s why that speculation is out there. But right now, the plan for Carolina is to still try and sign him.

REDA; And that’s what makes it a really interesting debate, because that frustration sometimes leads for some dramatic moves."

The part I don't understand is how a trade this big was made without a better sense of the player's attitude towards the team acquiring him. If the guy still doesn't know whether he likes the Canes as a franchise, how premature was that move?

It reminds me of the Islanders trading for Vanek and then flipping him to Montreal at the TDL in 2013 or so.
