I was thinking Kadri is likely gone but then after looking at Cap Friendly, I realized there are not too many good landing spots for him unless he goes to a bottom feeder for big bucks like Detroit, Bufalo etc. If he wants to go to a team that can compete for a cup there are not too many options with enough cap space to offer him a substantial increase. So re-signing is possible depending upon what he wants out of his next deal, money or a chance at winning.
I have been a leader in the pro-Kadri camp since Day 1. Before Manson; Before Helm; Before Cogs it was Kadri ( and Calvert) who gave this team grit, which it desperately needed. That said, I think he is gone and I cannot blame him. Someone is going to pay him a ton of money - I bet we are talking $7M x 6 years after his gutsy and suspension-less Stanley Cup run. As much as I love Kadri, I am not paying him $7M when he is 37.
So the ball is really in Kadri's court ( puck in zone?) He's made close to $40M in his career. The Avs could likely go for $5M x 3 years, then maybe $1M to $2M per for the following 3 years. That's another $20M for his career, plus maybe an endorsement or two. But if an Arizona or a Buffalo ( only an hour from home) offer him $42M for the same period, who are we to blame him?
My hope is that Kadri does have a sense of hockey history and does not have a need for a garage full of Ferraris. There is a possibility that Sakic can keep the band together and keep the Avs cup competitive long enough to get Kadri's name on that cup 3 more times.
Everyone - including Mikko to some to come extent - has taken a pay cut for the team. At this point, Makar is likely underpaid by $3M with all the trophies on his mantle. Mac already took a team friendly number once, and might do it again. Landy could have gone elsewhere for more ( like Seattle). Players like Nuke, Lehky, Manson and most importantly Kadri are going to have to accept less here, or enjoy the wealth made in a 5000 seat arena in the middle of the desert.
Without this getting too long, I want to comment that a good deal of the complection has changed since Joe's magic at the TDL. If this team can ice a 4th line of LOC/Helm / Cogs next year - for a total of $3M - there is some hope. With Newhook and Meyers on ELC, than means that it would not be impossible to see - for 1 year - a 3rd line for $3M.
Painful moves that need to happen in order for this team to 'stay together' - and even that is likely for only a year.
EJ needs to ride off into the sunset on LTIR. ($6M) = Nuke slot
Sakic needs to let Burky take his skills elsewhere as a UFA ($5M) = Mac 2024 raise
JTC is imply not a fit for the lineup card, nor the bank account. Sakic needs to trade him.( $3.5M) = Lehky if he takes less than he would get elsewhere
This leaves the $2.5M slot Nuke vacated. Is that enough to entice both Kadri and Manson? Highly unlikely. And that does not account for Newhook, Byram and Meyers the following year.
A possible minor solution would be for Sakic to go all Adrian Dater, say F*&k it! and go Husso / Frankie or even Frankie / Annunen. This saves $3M over a mediocre Kuemper.
Sadly, I don't see any way Sakic / Bednar push EJ and JTC out not have the brass balls to try to win a cup with a pair of average goaltenders on back-up salaries. So this has been a really long way of saying that I am sad Kadri will likely go elsewhere.
There's a danger to himself, that if he signs on another team for very large $$$, he might underperform with a less talented supporting cast/injury/bad luck and be looked upon as overpaid and less desirable. They won't have the patience we had with him. And since he runs on karma, he needs his fans to love him.
He will take a haircut to stay here, is what happens.
Can't say he is boring..Didn't get suspended. Defeated racism. Scored an OT winner with a broken freakin finger. Won the Stanley Cup.
Not bad.
I think you are on the right track with the numbers but would point out a scenario that would probably work for both parties , your 7x6 is a 42 million total 7 AAV , my solution works out to a 5.5 AAV and pays him 37.5 over 7 which isn't much of a haircut when you feed most of it upfront the way teams like the Leafs have been structuring their deals , 5,5,5,3,2,1,1 in salary plus say 7.5,5,3 in signing bonus over the first 3 years gives him an actual of 12.5,10,8,3 in the first 4 years then the balance could easily be moved or bought out if he's not worth the reduced rate vs the cap hit , he gets more upfront to invest offsetting the haircut and the AAV is down at 5.5 which the any team in the league would call a steal . This deal plus the 38.6 he has already made would give him a 76 million dollar career , he could also take a buyout/retirement at 35 with 33.5 from this deal and several suitcases full of cash from a KHL team in a Musim region . There are ways this team can make this work out , given the difference between NHL and NFL salary rates these deals are peanuts to this owner . Imagine paying a lineman 24 million a year compared to playing Mackinnon 25.2 for 4 years .I have been a leader in the pro-Kadri camp since Day 1. Before Manson; Before Helm; Before Cogs it was Kadri ( and Calvert) who gave this team grit, which it desperately needed. That said, I think he is gone and I cannot blame him. The 11 million in projected doesn't take into account the Rangers need to sign 9 roster players in order to ice a team so they really are in worse shape than Colorado cap wise , The Avs are in pretty good shape in spite of having some really good players left to deal with .I think Rangers will pursue him heavily. They have space and are clearly up and coming. Kadri probably likes a big city, but then again he could stay.
If Sakic succeeds in signing Kadri, Nuke and Lehky for those numbers I am flying to Denver and kissing Sakic right on the mouth.Looking at the Avs cap I see a world where they sign Kadri 5.5 , Bura 5ish , Nuke 4 , Lehkonen 3ish and Kuemper 5 this leaves 3.1 to fill 4 slots . A deal that either retires EJ or moves his 6 million out completely would make that either 7.1 or 9.1 to fill 5 slots which is very doable , another option is Kuemper holds out for too much and we let him walk , run with Franky and a rookie until the TDL and use some of the inevitable TDL money to bring in a top gun ufa to back up in the playoffs . That would free up 4 million making 7.1 to fill 4 slots which cam also be workable .
Point is this team is in better shape than most seem to think , there are a lot of ways this team can ice most of the important pieces from this group again next year for another cup run .
This didn't age well.I'm sick of Kadri. He has done nothing. He has given up. 4 points in his last 22 games. No goals in his last 19 games. Is this a 2nd line center on a playoff team? That's not even 4th line player statistics.
It's not even that he is Snake bitten. When was the last time he even had a scoring chance.
Bednar has tried multiple wingers and his game hasn't changed. Which is weird because at one point this season that 2nd line was dominant.
Regardless, he is a massive anchor right now and needs to sit. Indefinitely. Jost is not a 2nd line center either. Bring Newhook up and see what he has.
Landeskog- Mackinnon- Rantanen
Burakovsky- Newhook- Donskoi
Nichushkin- Jost- Soderberg
Compher- Bellmare- Sherrod?
Any comment Berube?
I love that we can count on Arizona perpetually being a cap dump shitholekeep Kadri. keep Bura. keep Helm. keep everyone! (not named Kuemper)
lower Kadri cap hit giving him the max years we can and whenever that turns into a burden of contract, send him to Arizona or Seattle or some other crap dump team.
If Sakic makes that happen, it's not the mouth you should be kissing him onIf Sakic succeeds in signing Kadri, Nuke and Lehky for those numbers I am flying to Denver and kissing Sakic right on the mouth.
There is absolutely no way these happen.
