His skill has surprised me this year. Some of the plays he’s made has had me double taking. He’s playing with a ton of confidence.

It is quite amazing when he has players like McDavid skating at him, and he just calmly looks at him as if he knows he isn't going anywhere. He has clearly adjusted to the NHL speed and his great gap control makes it seem like no one is going to over run him.

Holl now seems to give off this vibe that he is dictating things out there. It is quite a remarkable turn of events.

Criticize dubas for all the shit you want. The guy can draft well and some of his trades have been not too bad. The kadri one sucks but at the time was a fair move..
The Kadri trade was supposed to be Kadri to Calgary for Brodie and Mark Jankowski though. So yes you could say the Kadri trade sucks, or you can look at it as a better trade than what was originally wanted. Brodie and Kerfoot is better than Brodie and Jankowski. Just had to suffer a year with Barrie.

nah man I'm not denying his defensive ability just that he has seemed lost and scrambly with the puck when Muzz has been absent (and consistantly early in his nhl career).

I'm a huge fan of what Holl has doing right now, I just understand where others were coming from saying that they didn't have much confidence in him previously.

Also I'd still take Muzz over him. His impact is understated compared to Holl so I get where you're coming from.
In terms of being lost and scrambly with the puck past season when Muzzin was out. That could probably mostly be attributed to the fact Muzzin was the only person he played with. And the fact he was basically a rookie, I'm sure it's pretty difficult to get your timing down when your not used to your partner.

I'll end this saying I was not a fan when he first started. Did not think he played very good in his first 2 career games despite scoring in both.

It's incredible that Holl can have a game like that and never be forgiven in some minds (I still see people saying to expose him), however someone like Mo will have an entire 80 game sample of games with those blunders and he's an untouchable cornerstone for many.

It feels like people have this underlying expectation that it's all a mirage with Holl, and that Rielly's struggles are temporary, and these judgements cause people to pounce whenever they are confirmed.
I have no idea what you are talking about. Both Holl and Rielly have had good and bad games this year. Rielly has been good for years and Holl just got good. Your inability to recognize it is more a function of your cognitive e dissonance due to you laying out a theory that has actually been blown apart the last few games.

The short answer to that headline is. Yes.

Justin Holl has been the most consistent defensemen this year, and I am not too sure it is particularly close. I have been so impressed with him all year. He does so many little things, that allow our team not to have to defend at all. Plays seem to die when they go on his side of the ice in transition. His gaps are outstanding, and he seems to drive people to the corner more often than not, resulting in either a turnover or puck battle. He is a guy that reminds me so much of prime Chris Tanev. Just a calm, smooth skating, positionally sound, physical D-Man. He impressed me last year, and then kind of fizzled out a bit when he signed his ticket. But credit to him, he is earning every cent of his deal. He is getting better each game. Truly a great story. Very well deserving. You can never have too many guys like him and Hyman, who have had to scratch and claw for every bit of success they have earned.

Our top heavy team needs these value contracts. Amazing that we will have a RHD squad that should be under 8 million for the next 4 years.

It’s what they should do. Who cares about losing guys like Kerfoot?

I wouldn't necessarily want to lose Kerfoot. That said, the team doesn't have seven forwards that absolutely require protection, and the fourth defenceman is arguably more important than the fifth forward would be.

Kerfoot wouldn't be hard to replace for the 3.5 million in cap space that would open up.

I like Kerfoot, just like I liked kappy and Johnsson, but just like with them, it's clear that kerfoot's salary is the one we move out in order to retain our better free agents.

That would be my hope. I just think he's the team's best option for 3C for the time being. It would definitely be different from losing Leipsic to VGK.
