Carbery was asked on local radio (106.7’s The Sports Junkies - same guys who had Mayor Ford on to talk fantasy football in the midst of the crack smoking scandal) if he would send Ovechkin out with an empty net to score #895.

Said he hadn’t talked to Ovi but his instinct would be to keep him on the bench - that he doesn’t think he would want to break the record that way.

I get the sentiment, but doesn’t Ovi have one of the best +/- totals in the league the last few years with an empty net?

So you’d be prioritizing optics for a record over points in the standings. Again I get it, but it’s dicey territory trying to manipulate games in that manner.

That’s a good point. But I imagine part of the calculus is that the Caps have a healthy lead in the race for the Eastern Conf 1 seed.

Although if they don’t start getting better goaltending that could be in jeopardy
