I like Kerfoot, just like I liked kappy and Johnsson, but just like with them, it's clear that kerfoot's salary is the one we move out in order to retain our better free agents.

Of course. He's likely to be on the move even if he isn't selected by Seattle. It's just a matter of whether the Leafs want to/need to influence Seattle's decision or not?

Moving Kapanen/Johnsson was easy since the Leafs were completely loaded at wing. Even now, we probably have too many NHL caliber wingers to fit them all in. Kerfoot is one of 3 reliable centers in the organization that the Leafs can count on for next season, so it's really tough to move him

It's harder, but you still have to do it. And hope a guy like Engvall or a guy like Thornton can fill the spot.

Tbh I think one of the reasons Keefe has been hard on Engvall is because he really thinks he can become that perfect 3rd line C if he figures it all out.

That’s exactly how an expansion draft is supposed to work. Better teams lose better players.

I highly doubt it, especially when Kerfoot is the best option for them anyways. He might be the best center option left available in expansion TBH, as most teams will choose to protect their 3C's (or they won't need to protect them anyways).

I have run the CapFriendly expansion draft simulator, and as predicted, there are going to be more quality defensive options than Seattle will know what to do with, and not too many guys who are proven top 9 players.

Seattle likely sells off the pending UFA's, except Holtby if they want a proven goalie in net (although all three of those young goalies are very promising), and some of the younger depth guys if they get good enough picks in return for them. They will also likely take on some cap dumps in exchange for picks and prospects.

JvR - ??? - Mangiapane
Killorn - Kerfoot - Smith
Grundstrom - Sissons - Tanev
Jones - Dickinson - Stenlund
Brown/Sharangovich/Bellows/Hirose

Dunn - ???
Toews - DeAngelo
Bean - ???
Stanley/Jones/Jaros

Holtby - Vanecek
Hill/Kahkonen

This excludes the fact that Minnesota would need both Parise and Zuccarello to waive their NMC's to protect all of their good players (otherwise, they'd need to make a trade to protect one of Greenway/Eriksson Ek/Dumba from getting selected), and that Calgary will likely need to make a trade so that neither Giordano nor Tanev is not taken in the middle of their window.

Seattle likely won't have the kind of trades that Vegas received in front of them, so they are counting on these young guys stepping up and performing early on.

Nice work here. Hopefully the Leafs can then turn that cap space into an effective 3C replacement (not to say that Kerfoot has been ineffective).

There are quite a few options. Krejci might be too good/expensive, much like Danault and RNH, and may decide to stay with Boston. He would be a nice fit for our 3C even though he doesn't PK like Kerfoot does.

Getzlaf would be pretty good if he was willing to come here. He may decide to leave Anaheim in pursuit of another Cup. Not much of a PKer anymore, but wins draws, has size, Cup winner and playoff experience, and can play a skilled game. Would also give us a RH center which helps if Spezza starts becoming completely unplayable.

Stastny would be pretty solid if we are looking at older guys as well, but not a RH center and not as good as Getzlaf. Same goes for Eric Staal.

Erik Haula is a UFA again, and he would be cheap but still somewhat capable as a 3C. Maybe not quite as good as Kerfoot, but still good in a pinch, especially if he comes at 1.75 mill again.

Casey Cizikas has been arguably the best 4C in the NHL for a while, and may be good enough to be a 3C for us if we are not looking for offense.

Nick Bjugstad was once good, but injuries have hurt him a bit. Somewhat of a risk, but has been good in the past.

After that, we are getting into 4C's or guys who would not be great fits with our team. Adam Lowry is doing well this year as well, but I wouldn't count on him being much of a 3C despite that. He would be down the list for me unless he came cheap.

So we won't be short on options to replace Kerfoot even though we are lacking internal options right now and it would suck to lose him. We are a team who is going to lose a good guy no matter what, but we will be fine. Some of these guys may be about as expensive on the cap as Kerfoot, but they should also be good enough to replace him as well. Others may be a little bit worse offensively, but are better at draws and may be stronger defensive players so if they come a little bit cheaper than Kerfoot, then it could be a worthwhile replacement.

Justin "Orr Edition" Holl is back again. This is exactly what happened after his signing contract.
Here come the thousand botched pinch/rushing attempts.

Played 23 minutes tonight, 3 on the PK and the other 20 at evens. Great assist on the Matthews goal and he is the best rush defender we've had in ages. Opposing rushes die on our blueline or get snuffed out in the corner whenever they attack on Holl's side. In the last five minutes he rode a full speed Stutzle into the boards and tapped the puck behind the net to Muzzin with one hand while maintaining the pin, allowing for an easy breakout.

I cannot believe this is even the same player from last year.

Was ready to write him off as I didn’t like him at all last year. Might be the most improved defenceman in the NHL this year though. Just smothers guys defensively
