I really don't foresee a regression coming for Holl. I really think this guy is just a late bloomer. one thing I noticed in the last game that we played the oilers (OTL), McDavid seemed to be skating more on Muzz's side of the ice. I think its a telling observation. Holl is not overly quick, but he always seems to funnel the puck carrier to the outside. He lets them gain that step, as he pivets, but always seems to transition at the right time. Very rarely has he been turned inside out on those plays. Something I see a lot of from Rielly. I really don't want the leafs to part ways with either Dermott or Holl, but with Sandin being ready as well has made for a bit of a log jam, and thats not even considering Mikko. something will have to give on the left side. I am not sure they will do anything this season because depth will be huge in the event of injury. I just wonder what will come of this offseason

At this rate, if it costs that much to protect specific players, the Leafs would be better off protecting 4/4 (the big 4 forwards, and then Rielly/Muzzin/Brodie/Holl - their proven top 4) and exposing Dermott/Kerfoot.

Luckily Lehtonen and Sandin provide some insurance defensive depth on the left side.

Unless you think that giving Seattle an asset to take Kerfoot is a better option. I'm not sure it is.

Either way Holl is proving himself to be someone that needs to be protected.
I'd go with this.

Wouldn't offer a 1st to take Kerfoot over Dermott.

Centres are tough to come by in the expansion draft look at Vegas. Kerfoot should be an enticing option as he's got some term left as well. On a second line with quality players he could put up some points.

If they lose Dermott that sucks but every team will lose a player. Holl is playing his way into being protected so far this year for sure.

Dubas seems like he's pretty good at finding solid NHL players in unexpected, inexpensive places. Early returns on his drafts seem to support the idea that he's finding guys every year that are better value than their draft position, and he gets good value in the udfa/ufa markets. He hasn't found a bonafide star in a discount place yet (unless you consider JT a discount which I guess he technically was because he was offered more elsewhere), but if he can keep replacing the Kapanen/Johnsson/Hyman/Hainsey types with guys who are no worse, that's all we need to contend for another decade+....and that's how cups are won, it's not a 3 year window

Remember when a certain coach let him sit most of the year? Remember when certain posters agreed with that decision? Good times
Holl was making bone headed decisions. He has completely simplified his game and grown a brain. I don't think many said he wasn't skilled. He was a black hole in the ozone.

We have not seen it much in Toronto because we have royally sucked at defender development but defenders develop over longer periods of time and it is not always linear development ... when you see a young guy like Dermy last season when everyone got hurt step up a few games and dominate in a couple of them then you know he has da potential ... if it takes him another year or so to do it consistently in a top 4 role then that is completely normal and expected ... and he may not ever get there either ... but point is he has ability to achieve it if developed properly ... and it is up to ORG to help him get there

We have to do this because when it happens we may lose a Rielly due to CAP and what he brings and doesn't bring to table ... and we got a guy coming up who can make things seamless .. and then a Sandin comes up to 3rd pair with a guy like Bogo and e goes through his learnings too ... it is a process which requires management

It is not like wingers where you know in 1st 10 games if guy can score or defend as position is so very simple

He has impressed me the most out of any leaf this season. The addition of barrie and the MASSIVE leap forward for holl have made our defense completely different.

Thats I agree with. Holl really didn't play like he is playing now even a few months ago. Just glad he is doing great and hope he continues to get better. Imagine Holl becoming a #1 RHD in the League like Jones while playing for the Leafs at 2mil.

2 million for Holl. Fantastic steal. Remember when people thought it was an overpay?
There are non Leafs fans who still think Nylander is overpaid at $6.96 million AAV because someone like Nik Ehlers signed for 7 years/$6 million AAV. So obviously they would say the same thing about Holl who's contract is a steal.

You're not an NHL coach thus any criticism you have towards Babcock is completely invalid.

Criticize dubas for all the shit you want. The guy can draft well and some of his trades have been not too bad. The kadri one sucks but at the time was a fair move..

lol he was being sarcastic, because lots of posters (he was one) who called out Babs from time but everyone would appeal to authority, or say you are just HF poster it means nothing, which is kinda dumb.

It’s kinda stupid how good our d core got over night Brodie+holl+bogo>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Barrie+holl+Ceci

Took a couple years of tinkering and trying to find the right fit but in his short time here Dubas has done more and has had more of a positive impact for this defence than Burke, Nonis, and Lou combined.

Yep. As recently as last playoffs after Muzz went down Holl has been a straight up tirefire when it comes to decision making with the puck. Muzzin is being highly undervalued as a stabalizing force for his D partners. That doesn't mean Holl hasn't improved, but I expect the narrative to change pretty quickly if something happened to Muzzin (knock on wood)

When you're playing like a bottom pairing defenceman and only being held afloat by a way better D-partner, yeah it is a fat multi-year contract.
Not at all, try doing the math. Its a fair deal for him and the team. The bullshit we signed Jeff Finger to was beyond fat back in the day and he was trash. This is fair and far from fat.
