This is a good video. I see his head up more this year which is a good sign for his future.

The scanning skill that this video talks about is a key for him to develop into a elite player. It is the same skill that will keep him from getting killed with his head down. This is very positive. This is exactly what he needs to keep working on.

This was the #1 thing that made me look at him last year and start to wonder if we made a mistake. If he keeps improving this skill and others I feel he really can hit the higher end of his potential. Without this skill it won't happen. Keep up the good work kid.

And it seems to me that the impetus to improve these things was greater playing in the NHL than if he were back on the big ice in Europe or playing with inferior players in the AHL.

While I know these are baby steps Slaf needs to start showing why he was good enough to be picked 1OA. I don't expect a dominant season but I can't be excited if he goes out and skates for 40 seconds without getting his head knocked off or making a 5ft pass.

I think the point is that there is progression in his game. If you see stagnation or regression in many areas, then there is cause for alarm.

But right now, Slafkovsky is improving in many of the areas people identified as weaknesses last year. This is positive.

Blasphemy - how catastrophic that there were weaknesses evident last year! The fans worked hard for that last place finish and the 1st overall pick, and they deserve the very best.

I think he's looking more and more like a plumber, i'm afraid we're developing him into a 4th liner.

I just don't see the high end talent

It’s just so freaking sad that he won’t have Dach with him this year. I was expecting a big year out of Kirby and it would’ve helped Slaf come along.

I agree with putting Newhook there for now. There’s a lot of speed and size in that line. Hopefully they can find some chemistry.

Dach is a huge loss for the habs, and as much for Slaf.....very sad.

Way too soon for that comment.......

They’re playing him like a 3rd liner. He needs to force himself out of that role. We’ll see if he can.

I don't really get why you keep saying this. It's early but he's currently 5th in EV TOI among forwards just ahead of Monahan, and nearly 3 minutes per game ahead of 7th place Pearson by EV TOI. He's also played on our nominal 2nd line in games 1 & 2 and is currently on our 2nd line again + PP2.

Maybe it will change later but thus far they've been using him as a top 6, 2nd line winger.

Slaf’s playing with the 3rd Center at 5 on 5. He plays with Gallagher on the 2nd PP. 2 top centres are on the 1st PP. He has no special responsibilities otherwise.

He’s on a third line track with no defensive responsibilities. The fact they liked playing him with Dach doesn’t change that. Same as RHP, he’s not a 1st liner whether he plays with Suzuki or not.

Through two periods, Newhook has played 7:35 at evens to Monahan's 6:01.

Who says a 2nd liner needs to have special responsibilities? Was Chris Wideman on the top 4 defenceman track because he ran our PP for a bit a couple years ago?

I would definitely argue that the fact they liked playing him with our 2nd line center (Dach and now Newhook) does in fact mean he is being used as a 2nd line forward.

I think what you're defining as "third line track" is just tautological in this case, a guy who played on the 2nd line and PP2 is a 2nd liner to me.

OK. He’s a bona fide top 6 on the Habs. Suit yourself.

Slafkowsky needs time to cook, it's so damn obvious.

Send him to the AHL and let him cook on the top 2 lines, playing in all situations and playing a ton of minutes a night.
