If everyone on the staff wanted Boyle back, they would have made him AN offer. Attempted to massage his ego about his "role". Instead they let him walk and signed Tanner Glass for 1.5M.

Didn't Boyle want a more important role on the team which didn't include the fourth line? Sounds like the last thing Boyle needs is an ego massage.

They always love you so much more when you're gone. Boyle got out at the right time before we started hating his slow, bad skating can't fight self again.

To put it into perspective... the Rangers went into July 1 last year with ~$49m in salary tied up against a $64.3m cap. That number does not include Asham or Powe. So, ~$15m in space. McDonagh, Stepan, Hagelin, Falk, and Zuccarello were RFAs. Free agency opens on July 5. Despite not knowing exactly what the RFAs were getting, they added Pouliot for $1.3m and Moore for $1m. They were certainly bargain hunting, but they had an idea how much they could spend.

As it stands right now, the Rangers have ~$54-$55m committed, depending on how you construct the roster. On a $69m cap. Our situation right now is nearly identical to what it was at the open of free agency last year.

though i believe most of those guys werent arbitration eligible..whereas these guys are...right?

I'm not sure you've thought much about it, but the Rangers were in basically identical situation last summer.

Stepan, McDonagh, Hagelin, Zuccarello = ~$11m
Brassard, Moore, Kreider, Zuccarello = ~13m

Hagelin signed the earliest of those guys and he signed on the 10th. The Rangers shored up their depth with the Pouliot and Moore signings on the 5th. Good GMs have a sense of what money they have available to give out. For the Rangers, that number should be $1.5m-2m.
Tawnos, i really think they got lucky last summer. McDonagh signed to a great contract. Stepan took them all the way to training camp. They squeezed every penny out of him. I think that hurt Stepan's start to the season. I think they are in a tougher situation this offseason. They already lost 5 players from last years team. I think with other teams so tight in their cap situations that their will be players around later on. You cannot compare last years situation to this one. Its not as comfortable. They have more holes this year with less money.

They have the same number of holes with the same money. Perception will tell us otherwise, but the last 3 offseasons, the general perception of the Rangers cap space has been wrong. It's not about luck. It's about planning.

Brassard $4-4.5m
Zuccarello $4-4.5m
Kreider ~$2.5m
Moore $1.5-2m

$12-13.5m. $14-15m in Cap space. That leaves $1.5-2m in space for another player.

Because literally every other line and defensive pairing is more important to a team than the fourth line.

The guy's not gonna be easy to replace, but jeez, we didn't lose McDonagh or Stepan, here.

Between the epic penalty killing, our 4th line routinely being one of the best lines every night, his role in defensive situations, etc., I think that's selling him incredibly short to say he's just a 4th liner.

Speak for yourself. Watching someone just skate up to Boyle and touch him and have him fall over like a redwood tree was annoying.

Happened like all the time, brah!

This "Soft Brian Boyle" myth has to go.

Brian Boyle hit ranking on team:

10/11 1st regular season, 3rd playoffs
11/12 2nd regular season, 3rd playoffs
12/13 2nd regular season and playoffs
13/14 2nd regular season and playoffs

He may not have delivered the toughest checks, but he knocks people off the puck often enough.

No, that just means the Rangers as a team are SOFT don't you know????

Best case scenario is that Skjei decides to turn pro after this weeks development camp and is able to earn a spot (and play well once the season starts). They would be able to move Staal or Moore for offensive help. Preferably move Staal for a young center.

If the Rangers think Skjei is ready for at least 3rd pairing minutes they could move Moore in the off season, but there wouldn't be any real cap savings there.

I meant when he was trying to fight. Certainly you're not going to argue that he was even remotely competent when he tried to tough it up?
