I want seto, rw played in the west, still young and a good skater, put up some pts.

The Rangers have invested huge $ in the goaltending position and havr forced their hand in the win now mode.... if you dont follow through with that plan what are you doing?

Currently they're not set up to follow through with the above.

Their drafting hasn't made enough of an impact.

So you realize they made it to the finals right?

They lost Stralman but got Boyle . That's even or better . Not worse like done are saying

Richards is gone but they had too . Let's see what miller can do and they can always deal for a rental

After that Boyle wanted more minutes and he stinks on a 3rd line . Glass may suck or he could play his role just fine

They are going to sign someone to replace pouliott

I understand the recent moves. SC run and team are 2 different things....

Unless they make a big trade and youth moves into a big role, I dont have much confidence they can ice a team good enough in front of Lundqvist

I really don't see why not.

Strengths and weaknesses considered, Boyle/Stralman is a lateral move.
Pouliout can be replaced by Fast and probably put up similar numbers.
Moore can slot into some of Boyle's responsibilities. Glass is decent on the PK to help pick that up.
Richards 51 points are going to be tough to replace, but Stepan will be (and, really, was) #1C, Brass' line will presumably slot to #2 (which they really were a lot of the season) and Miller will Center the third line. The D corps and G are as good as last year.

The core (MZA, Steps, McD, Staal, Girardi, Brass, Kreider, Hags, etc...) all know what it took to get there and want to get back. The East isn't insurmountable.

How was Stempniak in Pitt? I think I remember him being really slow or am I remembering him wrong?

I know I'm basically asking who here likes torture, but what do you guys think of Heatley on a one year 1.5-2m deal? Could he not function in Pouliot's role ?

Stempniak was not very good in Pitt.

Heatley is beyond slow. Like glacial pace

Ok, You get Glass and dont go after McClement who signed cheaper? Right.

Doesn't make sense to me either

There ares still some decent UFAs out there. If the organization is committed to going with kids like Miller, Fast, Lindberg, etc. that's fine. Cool.

Dan Boyle is not playing a full 82 game season. Connor Allen will see some time. McLIrath or Bodie might as well.

The issue is size and PKing. They need to address both.

Why hasn't Daniel Winnik been signed? That guy can score a little and has size. He can play either on the fourth line or higher up. He's very physical. A fourth line of Glass-Moore-Winnik actually looks decent.

What's with Legwand? He's still out there. Perfect 3C and he can skate. What are his demands?

Booth has never been the same since the horrible concussion he suffered. I'd stay away. Penner is very inconsistent. He does show up for the playoffs but he'll drive AV nuts throughout the regular season. Heatley's skating is bad and you add MSG ice to that? No thanks. Stempniak doesn't help with size at all. His time to play on the Rangers was about five years ago. Setoguchi isn't the same.

Ott would be very good. Sandpaper, can take faceoffs, and can skate. His value must be low because his time in STL wasn't a success. Give him a one year deal.

Also for PKing...who is going to PK for this team? Moore, Stepan, Hagelin, Nash, MSL, Glass, Fast, MZA? Can Miller PK? Will Lindberg? It's nice the top guys PK but over the course of a full season, you don't want to tire them out. I'vea always been a firm believer in that at least two of your fourth line guys should have specific skills and play more than 5 minutes a night so either they're going to PK or be young PP specialists. Everyone needs to contribute.

So out of process of elimination and based on the way this team plays, sign Winnik and either take a flier on Ott, or see what is up with Legwand.

Winnik, Ott, Booth, Penner. Buy low (on all but Winnik)

If I were Slats I would go heavily after Kevin Hayes, a 22 y/o left shooting 6'4 LW/RW who scored 60 in 40 in College.

He will become a UFA on 15 August if Chicago can't sign him. Chicago will get a mid-2nd round pick as compensation for Hayes if not signed, and we can't top that offer. But we could give up a lower pick to get Chicago's permission to talk to Hayes, the price for that shouldn't be more than say a 5th round pick. We couldn't sign Hayes before the 15 August without formally acquiring his rights -- but we could get a handshake deal with him and I don't see too many agents screwing Slats over and I don't see why Hayes should change his opinion. We would more or less have to "promise" him a spot on the roster, but that shouldn't be impossible...

Kreider-Step-Nash
Hayes-Brass-Zucc
Hagelin-Miller-MSL
Glass-Moore-Fast
McD-Girardi
Staal-Boyle
Moore-Klein

Hayes has done a real good job playing with Gaudreau in College, and Gaudreau is a player in the same mold as Brass and Zucc. Hayes could do alright in that role. He is a big kid with good hands and smarts. He is good at adjusting to a smart play-maker. He also has a past as a center and is a bit of a lottery ticket to find one of those bigger centers, although that isn't likely.

I am not at all sold on that Hayes is a perfect fit for us, I think he skates well when he gets his speed up but he isn't gritty nor intense enough to be that big player type that just eats up Ds on the forecheck and he doesn't quite move well enough to be a big offensive threat. At least not at this point in his career. BUT, he is a good hockey player. He would do perfectly al right with Brass and Zucc and probably get decent stats. He would be a young big kid playing on an ELC in the NHL doing quite well in other words, IE if nothing else he would get a lot of value as a trade chip.

I don't believe he can sign until 8/15

Still plenty of time in FA and the offseason for slats to strike a deal. Ideally he signs Ott or Stempniak, still think a trades made for a C. And for the people wigging out about missing the playoffs take a deep breath MSL wasnt a Ranger the full year and we are 2 full days into FA

Florida doesn't make much sense to me. Too many other players.

It's the brother thing. People think brothers are magnetized to each other in the NHL. Just imagine if HFBoards existed when the Sutter brothers were playing.

I'm more interested in Legwand, Setoguchi, possibly Booth, and mental case Ribeiro.

I think Hayes ends up in Florida to play with his brother or Calgary to play with his former linemates Arnold and Gaudreau.

Don't see him coming to NY unfortunately.

He is not resigning with Chicago because he want to play right away.

I am sure both Calgary and Florida could be options for him, and I've seen the strong speculation coming out of Calgary especially.

But sometimes, I don't know, the conclusions drawn from this stuff get a bit on my nerve (like with Marc Staal). Someone like Brian Boyle just left a ton of people he have known a heck of a lot longer than Hayes have known Arnold and Gaudreau to play in Tampa for the mentioned reasons. But Hayes won't even consider going to another team than Calgary because Calgary owns the rights of two of his college teammates??? And his brother in FLA is a pretty mediocre NHLer who probably got a real journeyman career infront of him...

Due to the above Hayes would -- not -- even consider a "guaranteed" spot on a SCF team on Manhattan? Like what do I know, but I woldn't be so dead certain about him not considering any other team than Florida or Calgary...

Hayes played with Kreider for two years. Rangers scouts are familiar with him. If they like him, they've kept tabs on him. Maybe he's part of their plan. :sarcasm:

Stempniak wasn't great in Pittsburgh, but he was also brought in to try to play top 6 minutes. He's not that kind of player.

Mostly they ***** when Sather makes lousy moves. Also when he drafts goalies.

He either overpays for guys who aren't worth the money or he overpays for complete scrubs. Where is the in between? Where are the saavy signings?

Trades, for sure, RFA's, yup. UFA's, embarrassing, year after year after year.

He has had plenty of astute signings, they're just overshadowed by the mistakes or the mistakes are so out sized they make us over look them.

I think the signing of Glass is all on AV. The more I read about Glass, the more I think I can be a NHL player.

AFAIK Tanner Glass is widely regarded as one of the worst - if not the worst - players in the NHL.

His Corsi is hilariously awful.

And Glen gave him a 3 year deal worth that money. It's a horrible contract for a horrible player.
