They were a mediocre team with horrific goaltending. If they had competent goaltending, they would have been fine. They're far from a "mess", they're not the Oilers. Setoguchi will score around 15-20 goals, but he'll be garbage in every other facet of the game he could possibly be bad in.

A lot of people said the same **** about pouliot.. It's well worth the risk and they are the same age...

I can't believe loosing strals Benny and Boyle would still be causing an up roar about our depth etc. before last season everyone wanted Boyle traded, stralman was good but he plays soooo safe it's nauseating, and then we get Benny a career journeyman, who didn't even hit 20 goals and signs a long term deal $20m??????? Are kidding me...

Miller and fast are NHL ready.. And can provide what we lost.. Richards has been terrible but even still his pressence will be missed the most.. I'm confident miller can put up 40pts this year and with more playing time brass is a 50pt center... So hope shouldn't be lost

I thought Pouliot was an excellent signing, so that doesn't apply to me.

I was agreeing about seto, I think he fits that mold of a younger player coming in for that role.. Could impress... We have solid leadership and core.. He's would have no choice but embrace his role and play hard for his teammates..

My main point in is conversation is we didn't have cup expectations last season, maybe win 2 rounds or so, but we got a lot out of our players who's to say AV can't do the same with these young guns and new FAs we should trust our staff.. And that whole **** we don't draft well or slats is a joke, I think the past 4-5yrs he's done a better job and should get credit for his accomplishments.... Nyr are finally a team that is in that upper echelon of contenders like Pitt, Boston and some of those teams out west (not ranked high but in that conversation) and we've had consistency of playoff succes.. He'll we've made the playoffs 9 out of the last10 years, that says a lot

Please stay away from Setoguchi and Heatley.

Those guys have lost it and will not give us what we need.

Winnik would be a good pick up at the right price.

I'm OK with neither but at least with Seto, there's potential for him to improve on last season to some extent. Heatley is toast. No speed, no defense and he'll top out around 12 goals - and that's if you give him PP time. Stay away.

Doubt the Rangers are going to parlay out any serious money until some of the RFA's are done. I really don't think we're going to be playing around too much with the summer cap.

As far as Setoguchi or Heatley--don't like either of them.

Elite to me means there's only a handful of guys in the league who are as good / better at that position.

Lundqvist and Quick are elite goalies.

Kopitar and Bergeron are elite TWO-way centers, but they're not elite offensively like the truly elite (offensively and all-around) 1C's in the league: Crosby, Malkin, Thornton, Stamkos, Giroux, etc.

Also (in my opinion), you can be a legit 1C without being "elite." See: Eric Staal, Jason Spezza, Nik Backstrom.

Derek Stepan, IMO is none of the above, because he doesn't create enough offensively on a consistent enough basis, and contrary to what some would have you believe, he's not a great defensive center. He's a very good 2nd line center who usually won't look out of place as your top center (assuming there's enough depth and secondary scoring behind him), but will likely be exposed against the better teams in the league.

Legit 1C
Stepan
Brassard
Moore

would be fantastic center depth if we could fit it under the cap.

Legit 1C
Stepan
Miller/Lindberg
Moore

would likely be a big improvement as well.

But

Stepan
Brassard
Miller/Lindberg
Moore

is not going to cut it.

We got a lot of bounces en route to the SCF. We aren't likely to get those same bounces / favorable matchups / outstanding depth scoring by committee again. We will need to IMPROVE the roster to get back to the SCF.

We need Stepan playing behind a reliable 1C.

No, we just needed the guy behind Stepan to not beaver-up the ice.

Like, how do people not get this after watching the SCF?..

Not this **** with Stepan again. It's never going to end.

How many more times are we going to have to explain how we need a viable 2C behind Step rather than replacing Step, or breaking the bank for Staal or Thornton so Step can be the 2C.

This is why I keep mentioning someone like Kadri or Colin Wilson. Solid 2C that can play behind Stepan and put up offense. This is exactly how LA beat us with Kopitar getting shut down by STEPAN and then having Jeff Carter mop the floor with our lower lines.

This still blows my mind.

Anyone who thinks Stepan SHUT DOWN Kopitar watched a different SCF than I did.

McD, Staal, Stralman, Girardi, even Boyle and Moore had more of a role in defending against Kopitar, who still wasn't shut down, as he commanded attention and allowed Gaborik to score some crucial goals.

Stepan did nothing to really slow Kopitar down. If anything it was the other way around.

Did Stepan shut down Crosby and Malkin and Giroux too?

Don't get mad at him for not being able to spell heroine

And Stepan is probably the only Ranger that is widely underrated around the league

Yes.

A misspelling.

That's it.

And agreed on Stepan. He's not just underrated around the league, but by his own god damn fan base.
