Player Discussion JT Miller Thread

Nobody on earth thinks the Canucks are close to a championship calibre team.

What are you talking about?

I'm simply saying we have some really good CORE pieces. We need to start building around them in order to be a Cup contender.

we have like -- optimistically -- half of what we need to really say we can challenge for the cup. where do you see the 'next' four core players on this roster coming from? keep in mind the team is more or less capped out and has no impact prospects

Challenging for the cup is going to take 2-3 years.

Getting into the playoffs next year is more realistic with the right moves. Team needs young players like Bear, Hoglander and Podkolzin to make leaps. You make the playoffs first and then keep building out your team.

Is Marchand a deterrent to Boston? Was Perron to STL, Oshie to WASH, Kadri to COL, Killorn Stamkos (when he was out) to TB ?

My issue is were not as close as management thinks and should be looking at a 3-5 yr window not a shorter term one where were gonna have to keep bleeding picks and prospects to get what they want

That is why Horvat made more sense then and now even if then he wasnt as good a player as Miller. What he's shown this year is that clearly we need more time and that Horvat can be as good and better.

The prospect of OEL and Miller in 3-4yrs is not pretty. It's hard to overcome 15 million in bad cap money

Its the on ice body language stuff that makes it tough to like Miller for most around here and i get it it's a different generation. I played with similar hot heads and we never cared too much as long as we didn't have to kill penalties for it.

Guy seriously needs some counselling because he's gonna age and get worse and the pressure and hate will get much worse also down the road. He's gonna need to be able to channel positivity and a work ethic or it will become toxic when he's a complementary piece not an important one.

I think it's overblown right now as much as he pops off he also seems to be self aware just lacks the tools to deal with it properly.

Great, the direction of a re-tool quick fix has been done by all of the numerous coaches, managers and players, the plan has stayed the same through out, not sure how that can be looked at as anything other than the same thing but ok...

We've sucked many times over the last 10 years, sure, we have never actually properly rebuilt as that includes obtaining picks not giving them away, weaponizing cap space, not spending to the cap on mediocre players paying them too much, etc. How is there no reason to think a rebuild will work when we haven't actually done a proper rebuild?

EP Hughes and Demko, build around them, explain the plan, get them to buy in given a proper direction, otherwise none of those players remain on the team over the years given the same failing direction which is hardly any better, is it?
Im confused, you're arguing against a "re-tool", while advocating keeping Demko, Hughes and EP?

You can use words like 'building' around them, or 'tooling' around them, you can use a different language. It doesn't really matter. It's the same thing, and whether it will be done "proper" or not, will be determined after the fact.

JT isn't going anywhere, if you're keeping those guys, then you better keep Kuz.... yea this ain't sounding like a fresh start at all is it..

how the hell can you rebuild in 3yrs. your oldest core player is then 21?

i think your talking retool
Most of the rebuild crowd posts are essentially asking for a 'proper' version of the lambasted Benning quick fixes.

Basically, this time, we just have to draft the right players, and sign the right contracts = rebuilt.... Very deep insight..

Why would any team rebuild ever?

Why would any team rebuild ever?
Exhausted core, aged out top players, decent pipeline just missing lotto talent, drunk GM, heck lots of reasons. None yet apply here. (well maybe the drunk GM I dunno)

If EP is difficult in his extension, and pushing to get outta here, then yea, Nuke it. If he's staying, then any discussion around tooling/building is semantics.

For sure, Miller lacks maturity and that's partly why he was expendable. He needs some therapy to become a better version of himself. The fan and self-pressure can be much especially for a guy like him.

I've compared him to Bertuzzi in the past, and hope Miller doesn't do anything to make it worse.

i'm very skeptical of claims pro sports teams employ people to astroturf (especially with regards to niche forums like this one) but you have to wonder when people come out of the woodwork with that kind of energy and enthusiasm for supporting management
Sometimes it's hard to tell who is disingenuous and who just simply cannot understand the implications of the salary cap, 99.9% of the time it's the latter even though it feels like the former.

It's easy to forget these guys are all still kids. A 28 year old NHLer is a hardened vet, only relative to their job. They are definitely fast tracked life stage wise, out of the house at 16-17, no problem meeting women and starting families young, given the $$ to buy their own place etc.

However, the average 25-30 year old in the real world is a goof.

Yes, you know, like how the av's were built around Mac and Landy, like that? You can rebuild around certain players especially given the age of said players, and it doesn't have to be a re-tool, you know that right?

It's not the same, what we've done and likely will do is the opposite of what should be done, you build around those players we talked about, you acquire draft picks, you weaponize cap space. Don't spend to the cap and don't trade away draft picks for reclamation projects, which we likely do. It won't be done proper, as the language is the same, the plan is the same and the result will be the same. Building the way management/ownership etc. wants, you need a whole lot of luck in order to be successfull, it's the most boneheaded way of building a team and it's the reason we are where we are now.

Can JT not play on a team that is building? He signed the contract he can deal with or or he can retire, he's making 8 million a year (starting next year) take your money, play your game and STFU, that should be our approach. We're building to win a cup with this method, not building on the small chance we make it in and then get embarrassed by a team that has done things properly, this is a re-tool, what I talked about is a rebuild.

Lots of teams do it in 3 years, sometimes less, just requires buy in by ownership and management, look at the avs and leafs, both garbage teams both took 3 years or less to turn it around, this theory about rebuilds taking 5-10 years is a myth, perpetuated by teams that just don't do proper rebuilds.

But every team has 3-4 good players at any given time.

Can you be sure your rebuild leads to better 3-4 players?! No way to know.

I think you need a tool in the first place to retool. The Canucks have a dumpster into which someone accidentally threw a few useful things, not a set of useful tools that have gone dull.

got a laugh, watching Miller make sure that second Kraken goal was in.
" Hey guys, just in case you missed it- the puck is now in the net!!"

JT Miller has got to go

Yelling at his goalie on the ice, tantrums etc

Trade Miller and sign Horvat

You’re late to this party. That ship has sailed.

I honestly cant believe we decided to keep miller over horvat.

Why does this keep being said? JT was never chosen over Bo. Bo has declined his offers. They can't force him to stay.

Because of how the salary cap works.

They mistook Miller for a top line center.
They were both offered contracts. One accepted, one did not. Bo wanted a chance to earn a larger one, he increased his offers, and still hasn't signed. He seems to have his sights set on a new team. That's more his choice than the teams. If Bo isn't accepting 7-8m offers, then there's not much that can be done, takes 2 to tango.

Position has nothing to do with it, original offers were made after 2 very shaky years from EP, and a broken footed Bo. Their ability to be swapped was seen as a big strategy and strength going forward.

JT is one player, he's not keeping them from signing Bo any more than anyone else. If it's about money, then really they've chosen not to bite the bullet on guys like Boeser and/or Garland over keeping Bo.
