Player Discussion JT Miller Thread

I was a huge supporter of Miller when Green was here. Seemed like the only guy who didn't give up.

His play this season has been embarrassing and unacceptable. No idea what's up with him. Hopefully not phoning it in after cashing out on a big contract.

Like couldn't we have lame-ducked him into this season? I feel like we signed him without getting the contract year boost.

Center are going for 8 mil contracts, hopefully the Canucks can play him there enough to attract attention.
Maybe Miller to Boston for Carlo straight up? Or add 50% retention this year and get a 2nd thrown in.

Im pretty sure you cant do that... but not 100%

Yeah, two separate questions for me:

1.) Can you retain differing amounts through a contract? (No basis for this, but I don't believe so.)

2.) Where they're on one contract and the next contract hasn't started yet, can you retain on this last year of this current contract without retaining on the next contract? (This wouldn't seem so unreasonable as they are different contracts.)

Pretty sure they cant.

What is a retained salary transaction/trade

When a team trades a player, they have the option to retain a part of their salary (and cap hit). The team who retains the salary then pays the retained percentage of the salary, and also retains the percentage of the cap hit until the contract expires. The following requirements must be met to retain salary:
  1. The percentage retained cannot exceed 50 percent of the player’s salary (including all bonuses) and Salary Cap Hit.
  2. The same percentage must be retained for both the player’s salary and Salary Cap Hit, and cannot be modified.
  3. All teams are limited to a maximum of 3 retained salary contracts per season.
  4. Teams cannot retain an aggregate amount of more than 15 percent of the Salary Cap Upper Limit.
  5. Players’ contracts are limited to 2 retained salary transactions per contract.
As the retention would be for the existing contract, this year, it would not carry over once the existing contract expires.

Seems like there is no clear answer to this.

Mostly in spirit with the rule would IMO be that retention applies to both, current and the already signed extension.

Just going from memory here, but I believe this came up recently and the answer was it would only be for the current contract. Also any retention is for the length of the contract. So you can't change the percentage of a retention and it will last the length of the current deal.

Again this is from memory so I could be wrong

There is no question about it, It was a massive mistake signing Miller to that ridiculous extension. Move him before his new deal kicks in for whatever you can get. This has all the makings of a complete dumpster fire. It's only going to get worse as each years passes.

Very good article from Cam Charron on Miller’s struggles at centre this season: J.T. Miller is better as a winger than a centre, and this poses a problem for the Canucks

The problem for the Canucks is that Miller has really only succeeded on Horvat’s wing, and has had a very poor season at centre thus far. Baked into the price of Miller’s extension is the implicit understanding that he is going to be a top-two centre on the team, since wingers rarely see the kind of money that Miller got, especially as unrestricted free agents. It creates an issue with team building, since the Canucks’ money is tied up in a winger that can’t play centre, and the team doesn’t really have the money right now to improve at centre and defence at the same time. The big problem, as identified by several in this market before I began writing about this team, is that Miller can’t fit into the team’s long-range plans because he isn’t versatile enough to handle the load that comes with being a tough minutes centreman. While there is more to playing centre than taking faceoffs, Horvat has certainly been present in all situations and is having his best season. In retrospect, it’s a problem that the Canucks hitched their wagon to the winger rather than the centre to guide the team and play tough minutes through this eventual rebuild and provide lineup protection for any rookies that come into the organization over the next few seasons.

Also, as per the earlier discussion here and in other threads, trade retention is over contract not player. If Miller were traded with retention, it would only apply to his current contract and not carry over into his extension. I looked into it and ask a couple of people who know (Puckpedia bring one of them).
