I'd be curious what his trade value is.Signing him was a mistake, but not trading him before his NMC kicks in would be a colossal error.
I almost had a stroke trying to understand this.
Best just to expect the worst from this club. At least they'll meet your expectations!I can honestly say I did not see this coming.
Them not getting the correct read on what this team actually is.
Overplaying their hand on the Miller trade.
Then resigning him to a retirement contract.
Like couldn't we have lame-ducked him into this season? I feel like we signed him without getting the contract year boost.
Im pretty sure you cant do that... but not 100%Center are going for 8 mil contracts, hopefully the Canucks can play him there enough to attract attention.
Maybe Miller to Boston for Carlo straight up? Or add 50% retention this year and get a 2nd thrown in.
Im pretty sure you cant do that... but not 100%
They would be trading and retaining on this year's contract, it has no clauses. Pretty sure they can retain on this contract without retaining on the next because the next is not current yet.Im pretty sure you cant do that... but not 100%

At this point, I'm not expecting much.I'd be curious what his trade value is.

What is a retained salary transaction/trade
When a team trades a player, they have the option to retain a part of their salary (and cap hit). The team who retains the salary then pays the retained percentage of the salary, and also retains the percentage of the cap hit until the contract expires. The following requirements must be met to retain salary:
As the retention would be for the existing contract, this year, it would not carry over once the existing contract expires.
- The percentage retained cannot exceed 50 percent of the player’s salary (including all bonuses) and Salary Cap Hit.
- The same percentage must be retained for both the player’s salary and Salary Cap Hit, and cannot be modified.
- All teams are limited to a maximum of 3 retained salary contracts per season.
- Teams cannot retain an aggregate amount of more than 15 percent of the Salary Cap Upper Limit.
- Players’ contracts are limited to 2 retained salary transactions per contract.
Seems like there is no clear answer to this.
Mostly in spirit with the rule would IMO be that retention applies to both, current and the already signed extension.

The problem for the Canucks is that Miller has really only succeeded on Horvat’s wing, and has had a very poor season at centre thus far. Baked into the price of Miller’s extension is the implicit understanding that he is going to be a top-two centre on the team, since wingers rarely see the kind of money that Miller got, especially as unrestricted free agents. It creates an issue with team building, since the Canucks’ money is tied up in a winger that can’t play centre, and the team doesn’t really have the money right now to improve at centre and defence at the same time. The big problem, as identified by several in this market before I began writing about this team, is that Miller can’t fit into the team’s long-range plans because he isn’t versatile enough to handle the load that comes with being a tough minutes centreman. While there is more to playing centre than taking faceoffs, Horvat has certainly been present in all situations and is having his best season. In retrospect, it’s a problem that the Canucks hitched their wagon to the winger rather than the centre to guide the team and play tough minutes through this eventual rebuild and provide lineup protection for any rookies that come into the organization over the next few seasons.
Whats next? Cam Charron claiming that if you make the playoffs anything CANT happen.Very good article from Cam Charron on Miller’s struggles at centre this season: J.T. Miller is better as a winger than a centre, and this poses a problem for the Canucks
