A real-life horror story.

No other way to put it. The infuriating thing, as several others have already said, is that this did not have to happen. Accidents happen all the time, but this (obviously) is criminal.

There is no excuse for this whatsoever.

One thing this reenforces for me is just how much we are at the mercy of others in this world. Especially on the road. No matter how perfect a life might be, as Johnny’s seemingly was, a decision - usually a poor one - by a complete stranger can alter or even end that life. And as if that weren’t enough, said stranger’s decision will affect EVERYONE in the victim’s orbit.

Even sober drivers today are terrifying. Entitlement; complete lack of consideration for anyone else on the road; cell phone use and just plain stupidity are why it just sucks to drive anywhere these days. The WORST part of my job is driving to and from work. Some people are just born assholes and stay that way their whole lives, and we see them on the road every day.

My deepest sympathies to the entire Gaudreau family.

What a f*cking nightmare.

I just read his sister was getting married today.

I saw that too. Just adds to the tragic sadness, as this was obviously supposed to be a special weekend of joy, family and friends.

Regardless of when they choose to move the ceremony to, their wedding day will forever be attached to the worst day one can imagine.

And Matthew was supposed to be the best man

Edit: my mistake, according to what Fenway posted below, not best man, but a groomsman.

Still tragic.

My kids where told to call me any hour any time if they could not get home safely.

Yup, my parents did the same with us no questions asked. My sister does the same with her kids too. If they're at one of the casinos she'll even pay for a room for them to stay overnight, anything to keep them off of the roads after a night of partying.

Man, you just never know. This is so devastating and sad, but also so avoidable. I'm so gutted for his family and friends. The fact that his sister was supposed to get married today or tomorrow (?) - Just gutted, man. It's not fair at all.

This is why my vehicle always has a sleepover if I have a beer somewhere. Call a cab, get an uber or find a safe alternative, the risk isn't ever worth it.

the only semi logical reason I can imagine for passing on the right is they were coming up to a side street and he thought they were turning left? beyond that wtf are you thinking passing on the right like that, its a level of stupid that involves words we cant say on here.

unfortunately since he was drunk he'll get off with less than 5 years in jail. Henry Ruggs only got 3-10 and that was with him sitting and watching the girl burn

Tomorrow is never promised. Rest easy Johnny Hockey. Glad I was able to watch your skills on display back at BC and grow and develop into an NHL Star.

I hope I don’t misword my post but even someone 100% sober who pulls a ridiculous driving stunt like that deserves decades in prison and the same punishment if they kill cyclists.

But yeah if this POS didn’t drink and drive or was in an Uber this doesn’t happen.

I got my bicycle tuned last winter and have riden it twice. And when I do it’s only on the sidewalk. Simply too scared of cars same reason I’ll never get on a motorcycle.

It’s extremely dangerous being in a car on the road today considering the distracted driver epidemic. Never mind on a bike or motorcycle. Texting while driving is very common these days. Technology needs to step in, disable phones while the car is in motion. Automakers/ cellphone manufacturers should be forced to update their software
