I think the losing gets to him and it's better that he takes a few games off than blow up on his team out of frustration. It's not like letting his assistants coach meaningless games makes a difference.

He both accepts that the team needs to work through a few more losing seasons until they build critical mass, but absolutely hates it.
If that’s the case then he’s a petulant child who can’t handle his emotions and doesn’t belong anywhere near a professional setting. We already know that is who he is though.

A man who is employed to be the Head Coach not doing his job does not need to be justified or excused.

He probably doesn’t want to be behind the bench given the pointlessness of the games. The organization has foolishly given him enough cache to pull such a move.

Our head coach has basically been on load management the last few weeks to end the season.

That locker room has to be a disaster right now. I'm positive that there are a few players that would like to bash Tortorella into next year with the feelings going both ways. It's probably best that the players that are going to be here going forward not be exposed to that sort of thing. Obviously Hayes and Torts is an issue. It also looks like TDA has burnt his bridges again. JVR has every right to be angry with the way he has been mishandled by the club. There may be some other players who have an axe to grind with Torts as well. It's best to keep some people away from each other right now.

Oh, he wants to get his assistants experience being the head guy behind the bench too.

It’s all a learning experience where Torts just gets to not do his job and somehow be applauded for it.
Torts has a mistress downtown, so he told his wife he's in the pressbox, and every time the camera pans, he says he's in the washroom.

Let's look at all the great things this man has done for the team.
Improved powerplay
Improved scoring
Improved defence
Knows about all players in the system
Great at instilling a winning atmosphere
Penalty kill is now elite.

Excited for next year!

I'm not sure what I'd call it, but he's been a good soldier and bought fully into Tortorella Hockey. Lots of pucks deep, lots of grinding. Safe plays. Minimal use of the skills on display for his whole career. I can easily see a resurrection elsewhere.

I would say Fletcher’s incompetence with trying to trade him this year put him in limbo on a human level. Then he doesn’t get moved & he’s unwillingly inserted into the controversy to no fault of his own with the fallout post deadline.

I get these guys are paid a lot that will be the automatic response but still off the ice probably wasn’t a fun time this last year plus even going back to the summer for JvR. It’s probably not fun showing up to a place where you aren’t wanted whether right or wrong. You probably get to a point where you might be actually hoping for a chance potentially. Then you have situation like JvR’s where the GM fumbles the bag & it blows up on for you to still remain in a rocky spot.

Oh look, another asshole that can't be bothered to go above the bare minimum to learn about a player a level below in the system. Where do they find these guys?

Imagine them asking Rob Thomson about a guy coming up from AAA, that he coached in spring training, and giving that answer. Only in this shitty sport.

Truly stunning they they keep finding these guys and falling in love with them. It's an organizational value.

Just found out about this yesterday (tuned out a while ago).

It's absolutely comical that the "Be a Flyer!" and the "You don't f***ing matter as a player/person, only the club matters! Nobody is bigger than the club!" franchise just grants the coach some time off because he doesn't feel like coaching out the year.

How is any player (or fan for that matter) supposed to ever take Torts and the whole organization serious again?? Why should the players continue to play hard in a lost season when the coach can't even be bothered to show the f*** up?? Why should fans continue to fork over their money to such a loser franchise?? Unreal!!

York, Frost, Tippett, Cates have all turned into solid starters.

Isn't that the only thing that matters this season?

Not whether Hayes or JVR are happy with Torts (JVR probably has no problem with Torts, CF is another matter)?

TDA is a mystery, something serious happened, and it wasn't taking a shift or two off in game 77.
It'll come out at some point, but if Torts was just pissed off, he'd been benched for a game or two and back into the lineup, like everyone else this season.

Four guys, three who have been starter quality for a long time? Then Cates?

That's no youth movement. What happened? Where's the youth movement? You had every prospect in the org cycling through to get real NHL experience, and you scoffed at any suggestions that would never happen because the team doesn't want to play them. You insisted, based on no evidence, that Tortorella would control the situation and force that to happen.

Could you explain how you got it so wrong while the rest of us were right again?

The rumor floating around yesterday, which I can't verify, was that TDA didn't show up for an optional practice the day after being a healthy scratch. That put off the coaching staff so TDA is done for the year, if not his time here in Philly.

....it was optional. I don't like TDA but that would be a massive pile of bullshit.
