John Tortorella Named (Part Time) Head Coach Discussion

I think Torts point on the cute play was the same reason a lot of basketball coaches hate fancy dunks, how often do you see a player try an ESPN highlight move and end up blowing the two points? Same way, players who haven't mastered the basics of offensive play shouldn't be wasting practice time working on their "Michigan."

First, become competent, things like shooting accuracy, deflecting shots, making passes on the blade of your teammate's stick, etc. Then once you have the basics down, then you can get creative. A lot of young players would rather get cute than put in the hard, boring work of polishing their fundamental skills.

There are things McJesus does that I'd kill most of my players for trying, b/c they aren't going to pull that off in a game very often, and will end up turning the puck over on a regular basis. Now if I had a McDavid, different rules apply.
Zegras has shown the talent for years at many levels to do those kind of things. I think the kid knows when to try it and when not to. Torts's rant show he didn't do the basic job of getting to know how skilled one of the better players on a team is. You would think a TV analyst should have known Zegras could do that stuff and wouldn't rail against him doing it by saying that the team he did it against should take a cheap shot at him.

I guess he's just trying to tell others they can't do what McDavid does.....

Johnny Hockey is definitely happier in Columbus than he would have been if he came home.

McDavid can do things that no one else has the ability to do. When others try, they come up short embarrassing themselves and shorting their team. It’s like a garage band trying to cover Jimmy Page’s licks; it’s not the real thing. Try something else.

Tortorella doesn't want McDavid. He wants Barkov. He'd rather have someone who plays more defense than a generational talent. Tortorella just hates skill. He hates offense. He hates it so much he can't even be bothered to learn how it works so he can have his teams defend against it btter. This season, around the midpoint, the team went on a bit of a run and they were scoring. They were doing it playing posession hockey and using some creativity. Tortorella publicly called that out, promised to put a stop to it, and promptly got the team back to dump and chase grinding. Scoring died. Team started losing. Talking about what the team needs, he didn't ask for more scoring talent. He asked for even more grinding talent. That's what he wants.

He has told you who he is and what he values. He has spent many, many, many years proving that. Why won't you believe him? Why do you create a bunch of fanfiction instead? He's not who you think he is. Maybe start pulling to get management and coaching that actually are what you want them to be, instead of defending failures because you're pretending they're something they clearly never will be.

Everything you think about Torts is wrong. I'm still waiting for him to order the massive youth movement you didn't just think would happen, you vigorously argued would happen because he would command it and everyone would tremble and obey. We are at Game 81. When will that be beginning? Soon?

But that's not the job of a TV analyst on a National Broadcast to state. That's something coaches state in practice to a player who tries that shit. The fact he stated the opinions on known skilled players on National TV shows he doesn't do research to know what players really can do and that if they can do that stuff at the highest level they will have it driven out of them if he coached them. Great guy to have around a team with little skill as it is.

Torts - if he had an ounce of honesty about himself.

I know how things seem now but things change. With the right leadership and a good offseason or two...... NJ showed that recently.
I'd love to agree but it's not that easy. Look at the Devils. They've built a great team with 7 years of decent to excellent drafting going back to 2016. MacLeod and Bastian aren't stars, but their first two picks are in the lineup. The got multiple NHL players out of each subsequent draft, and tanked enough to get a shot at the top pick. Some luck for sure, but the idea you can build a great team without elite talent means the rebuild starts now, not 5 years ago. New Jersey Devils Draft History at hockeydb.com

Rangers had some solid drafts too, but they have the NYC advantage, a bunch of free agent stars who would only play there and forced their way onto the Rangers: Trouba, Panarin, Fox and now Kane. You need less draft luck and turnaround time if great players seek you out.

They called up Ginning for G81, does that count?

NJ's defense is mostly free agent signings and trades.
Right now it is, but they traded Smith and Muk away and they had cap room to sign Hamilton and take advantage of Avs’ cap hell (Graves).

Luke Hughes and Simon Nemec are an instant top 4 pair within a year, and sky’s the limit. Seamus Casey looks like a great pick too. I don’t consider their rebuild really done until the top D arrive and they are already a top team in the league. They did it right while Fletcher fumbled.

Not sure that one happened but alas.

Hello lads, I peruse your board whenever I see something funny's happened. Why isn't Tortorella coaching games?
He wants to get a different view of the team so he went to the press box but then reporters noticed that he wasn't in the press box so after asking Tortorella about it it turns out the press box has a terrible view so now he just watches them on TV in the locker room.

Yes, this is actually how it has progressed.

The first part is arguably viable, assuming the assistants manage the line changes and there's a degree of co-ordination and certainty about how the team's supposed to play. I get the odd feeling that's not what's happening though.

Good luck.

Oh, he wants to get his assistants experience being the head guy behind the bench too.

It’s all a learning experience where Torts just gets to not do his job and somehow be applauded for it.

Do you at least get funny gifs out of it like this when something goes wrong and he sends a lackey to deal with it?

I think the losing gets to him and it's better that he takes a few games off than blow up on his team out of frustration. It's not like letting his assistants coach meaningless games makes a difference.

He both accepts that the team needs to work through a few more losing seasons until they build critical mass, but absolutely hates it.
