There’s also a difference between

a) using two D when you have good D
And
b) using two D when you have an underperforming Sanheim and 5-6 clueless shitters
The thing that Torts seems to see is that aside from TK, with the open ice in OT, most of his forwards have defensive liabilities that out weigh their offensive potential. A couple of defensemen have as much offensive skill as most of the forwards. As we all know, the roster is challenged when it comes to scoring. So to him 1 forward; 2 defensemen makes sense.

Disagree. Frost, Hayes, Tippett, Laughton, JVR, TK. You can make three pairs of competent forwards to roll through a five minute OT with that. Scatter in one of York, Provy, Sanheim, TDA at a time. They'd have more OT wins by default. There's no point worrying about defense in OT. It's designed to encourage scoring. You go in trying to max out defense instead of offense and you'll lose. Like the Flyers do.

And we should all be thanking Torts. Costing them OT points is the only smart things he's done this season.

Every failing of this team is by total accident. Them trying to succeed leads them to the wrong decision every time. It’s funny, but I admit this joke worked better in a 22 minute Seinfeld episode.

With the slop on this roster playing 2D/1F makes sense in that it increases the possibility of shutting down an opponent’s scoring chances. Aside from one forward being TK, there probably isn’t another forward that Torts could put out on the ice with him that might be able to generate a scoring chance. That guy would probably end up turning it over and creating a scoring chance against.
Good point they could be 0-11 in OT instead of 1-10, can't take that risk.

"we need more goals! but if any of my guys try to skill it up, i promise theyll be glued to the bench.."

"hmmmm! i dont know where to go from here, but we need to make more plays"

LOL... we need a new version of hotdog man with Torts face instead of Flutch...

It would help if someone actually had the "talent" to skill it up.

I've got to agree with deadhead.

You can fault Tortorella for a lot of things, but the fact is this club lacks talent.

If you're penciling in Couturier and TK as THE two major facets of your top line.... you're in trouble.

Couts (at 100%) and TK would be a huge upgrade over Frost and Tippett as your top line.

At 5v5...2021-20222022-2023
Shot attempts against per 6060.7360.24
Expected goals against per 602.722.68
High Danger Shot Attempts Against per 6011.9712.5

Damn, look at the massive improvement under Torts. That improved effort, culture, and accountability are really staying as intangible as possible.

At least they don't "roll over and die" anymore!

Sure does feel like they're rolling over and dying every night they're outplayed. Which has been just about every game.

To be specific, it is different dying. The AV/Eakins style of north-south dump hockey with D and F playing as separate isolated units was death. They play as a five man unit now, but watching them drop into a shell to yield all the high ice as they try to shotblock their way to wins and offense is treated as a perimeter grindfest with modern concepts banned is a different death.

Would you like to have your arms torn off, or your legs? Both would be a frustrating experience. Such is last year vs now.

And yeah, they mix it up after whistles now. Ok. So what? This isn't them trolling those Byslma squads into meltdowns. It feels like they're trolling us and themselves. It doesn't make a scrap of difference where it matters.

They have less talent than a year ago, no G, no Couts/Brassard (60g 12-21 33), no Atkinson, and of course, no Mayhew. With TK injured, their best goal scorer is Tippett?

They're asking Frost and Cates to be 1C and 2C.

61 points last year, 59 points with 16 games to go.
Yeah, I'd say they're playing significantly better than last season.
