Modern NHL coach, right here.

Not obsessed with defense at all.

Really offensively minded.

Understands the sport.

I'm not sure how much you can blame Torts on this. TK is out, Couturier is out, Atkinson is out.

This roster sucks. What else is he supposed to do? The guys on the roster on offense aren't exactly lighting up the lamp. This team needs to be playing a conservative game if they don't want to be embarrassed every night.

"What else is he supposed to do?"

Easy, he's supposed to keep in the forward he's healthy scratching and not dress 7 defensemen. Healthy scratch any one of our many dogshit defensemen and have Zamula replace them instead of Laczynski.

Dressing more defensemen does not make the team better defensively or play a more "conservative game", so we're gaining nothing by doing so.

Why is this always the answer to when a team struggles to score? Wouldn’t it be more advantageous to open things up a bit so they can create more opportunities to score? Who cares if the other team “may/possibly” get more opportunities as a result? Scoring more than the opponent is the goal. Why go the risk-averse way (& only the risk-averse way)?

The other team "may" get more opportunities?
I think the operative word is "will," and if they're a good team, a lot more.
And it's not like the Flyers are that conservative, Hakstol, Berube and AV are more conservative than Torts.

It would help to have some skill people who can enter the O-zone with possession on a regular basis and make plays. You have Frost and TDA and both are inconsistent. That's about it.

Who is scoring? This team is abysmal upfront. This team is most likely dead last in 5v5 scoring. This team even sucks on the powerplay.

The other team isn't going to "may/possibly" get more chances, they will. The best they can do is play sound hockey and not put their players too much out of position.

ffs... I'm even agreeing with deadhead at this point.

Even if that were true, ADDING MORE DEFENSEMEN DOES NOT MAKE THEM BETTER DEFENSIVELY.

Especially when the forward being removed is not our worst one, offensively or defensively.

Wait wait wait a second . You do realize Torts' is an offensive guru with his big boy Rocky Thompson . He comes in here and structures the F out of most of the lineup , dump and chase special . You can blame players all you want but Tort's hates creativity and wants old school grinding .

It is a piss poor way to coach in this day and age but he jumps up and down acts like a monkey and bullies the media so people who don't know shit about hockey which is 90 percent of the hockey watching public buy right into his crap . He is an asshole !

When your team can't score, slashing scoring further by being conservative makes winning harder. They have the goaltending. Trust in it. Instead of being so safe you end up spending most of the game defending endlessly until the inevitable cracks happen with no offense to compensate. The Tortorella special.

It's a worse strategy than ever these days. The league is built to favor offense over hanging on for dear life.

Weird you told us Tortorella is an offensive mastermind and the team would be good at offense, because he is such a secret offensive genius.

How come you were wrong about every single aspect of that?

I don’t think that Tortorella really cares if they win or lose for the rest of the season. He’s trying out guys for the future to see who can play with whom and in what circumstances. Z is up tonight to see if his play at this level is better than it was in the past. It will be interesting to see who he is stuck with as a partner.

It is not his fault. It was the GM
But the GM also made no mistakes at the same time. Well just one mistake
But then Tortorella had a name on that letter
So Tortorella was bigger than the GM

Wait this is confusing now

Hoooooly shit. Think about what he’s actually saying here.

“Even though we scored, we didn’t stray away from what I focus on: grinding.”

Meaning grinding is what he thinks is important, not the scoring. Thats being treated as merely a potential distraction from what he thinks matters most.

At this point, anyone denying that he’s a dinosaur is just lying. It’s not even arguable, it’s not a matter of opinion. He openly and loudly dislikes offense/skill/youth and fetishizes grinding/goons/defense.

Remember that a couple months ago the team was also scoring and winning via east-west and possession hockey and he vowed to shut it down to get back to grinding. And the scoring stopped right after.

After years spent with Gordon, Lappy, Hakstol, AV, and Tortorella, we probably need to turn over the entire roster and prospect pool to purge the contamination of bad hockey that's been taught. That's why this is going to be a decade long process. They really have to start over, and they haven't begun.
