Have we not been knocked out in the first rd fir the last 5 years ? f*** yeah , go leafs go

Dumb post, considering our main core guys were children for all of those. You seriously expected 22 and 23 year old Mitch Marner and Auston Matthews to "have it all figured out" the last few playoffs, eh? Like I said.......SPOILED.

Fair enough.

Myself I always knew the signing was always going to be borderline value wise.

Heck, the fact is he's still giving us legit solid 1st line production in year 4 of the deal....that's actually probably better than I thought.
I remember you saying he was overrated before you started your homer schtick and you were right

his production is a product of the team , he generates very little offends on his own

The deeper we get into the season the more he’s playing like a slower more skilled Hyman right down to gluing himself to the front of the net hoping pucks hit him on the way in .

I don't see how JT's contract handcuffs us unless we know what exactly we're handcuffed from doing. We haven't lost any of our core players due to salary cap constraints and we haven't, to our knowledge, been stonewalled in a trade or free agent acquisition due to a deficiency in cap space. We've actually been able to successfully move cap, when required.

I do think it's fair to say that at his age, and with his playstyle, that the contract may not be fantastic cold hard value, but I don't think you can assess these things in a vacuum. He's close to a point a game despite that second line looking sluggish, and he's one of our better forwards in terms of finishing his checks and winning faceoff battles.

Okay, but Tavares has been on the team for three of them, and missed one due to injury. So how is it all/mostly his fault?
Where did I say it was all/mostly his fault ?

and let’s be honest , Johnny is never even remotely at fault , it’s always been his teammates letting him down

JT going to make a lot of people look silly soon.

Matthews suspension was a big test to see if he's truly bust or not. A clear 100% "not".

I guess what bothers me here is that I'm fairly certain you were one of the ones celebrating the Tavares signing and saying it was nice to finally have a real #1C unlike the flawed Matthews.

Some of us knew from the start that the price tag was never going to be efficient even in year one of the deal, let alone year 4.
I think there were quite a few people who weren't in love with the signing, but welcomed a player of JTs ability and tenacity. The number on the contract while I'm not in love with it cannot be changed nor do I think we would be wise in any attempt to move it.

For all you folks saying you'd like it a lot better if it were a much lesser number, well no shite who wouldn't probably even JT so he'd stop having to hear all the needless whining over something that you can never have. I don't love the fact that Matthews didn't sign an 8 yr deal and at the kind of money he demanded, certainly should've, same goes for Marner, for a kid who grew up dreaming of wearing the Maple Leaf, he sure just treated them like a temporary cash register. I never whine about the things I cannot change nor don't have, and in my 68 years the one thing I've learned is that you need to learn to enjoy the things you do have.

JT’s looked better lately overall since probably about the start of the month, that Seattle game, and he did step up when Matthews got that bullshit suspension.

But he was still dogshit for about six weeks before that, fourteen games without a goal and getting gimme points because the offense is so great overall, yeah he’s fundamentally excellent but still.

I can accept him having two bad months out of a seven month season, but I wouldn’t bring him back when his deal ends unless he takes half (5.5).

Never even remotely? I guess the posts about wanting Tavares moved to the wing, moved down the lineup, or traded are a figment of my imagination
i never said move him down the lineup , that was someone else

trade - yup . i'd trade anyone if it improved the team and JT's cap hit could be better used

move him to wing - yup , since he can't skate and his game is much more suited to wing

but i don't understand how you made the jump from me wanting him moved to wing or traded to me blaming him for everything?

the way i look at it is if Johnny isn't playing that's on him and not everyone else holding him back and the same goes Willie and M & M since they all get plenty of opportunities

I was talking about posts by others. My point was that Tavares has not escaped criticism here.

Our Johnny totally talked the talk right now and paid the price to be the boss... then we scored. That was nice to see. It was the 2-2 goal by us, see the highlights. We needed that by our captain and gangsta Johnnyfather.

I don't want to overreact, but I'm worried about his game. I don't remember us having such a dreadful 2nd line over the last 4 years.

There was a shift tonight where he was the lone forechecker and watching him try and get off the ice on a change was so slow... Not to mention him forcing Kerfoot & Willy offside on his rush up the ice. Somethings wrong with his game

Almost everything about him is unlikeable.

His skating? Unlikeable.
His robot personality? Unlikeable.
His salary and contract? Unlikeable.
His leadership? Unlikeable.

I don’t know how this guy keeps getting a pass in the media. I’m sure he’s a good dude but this contract is killing the team and is only going to get worse the next 3 years.
