Just make it Edmundson straight up for Puljujarvi. You add to a position of weakness from a position of strength. No 1st rd picks need to be included.
The problem is, Puljujarvi doesn't appear to be in high demand. Edmundson is. I could see a deal based around these two, but more is needed to get Edmundson, and more still to include retention.

Puljujarvi, a pick in the 2nd half of the 1st round, a 3d (retention for 2 years ain't cheap) for Edmundson at 50%. This also frees up cap room for EDM, enough to allow for another rental. My Habs would have to fiddle around to meet the cap since this adds to their cap, but I think there has to be a way.

Zero interest in these types of off the glass and out players. Regardless of cost he's a poor stylistic fit to a team that is currently struggling in transition.

Edmonton isn't struggling in terms of shot suppression and they're not getting cycled to death. A lot of their GAs have been coming off of turnovers caused from poorly executed rushes.

They also need a defenseman who is comfortable elevating their minutes into the early 20s with regularity. Edmundson is probably past that point in his career seeing those injuries pile up.

Not a deadline deal. It's a now deal.
No retention. Straight up Edmundson for Puljujarvi. Edmundson is a player the Oilers could use. We take a chance on Puljujarvi.

But.... why ? Puljujarvi is clearly not developing the way it was hoped, and might well be back in Europe in a year or two. I'm game for playing him and seeing if MTL can make him into a player by offering him ice time, but Edmundson should fetch far more, whether it's now or at the deadline. But MTL might as well retain and move him as late as possible to have more suitors. I also expect Edmundson to improve his game, he's been shaky since his return from injury so might as well let him get the rust off and be more impressive to scouts from all comers.
He should fetch something in the same range as Chiarot, Savard or Lehkonen. All got better than Puljujarvi.

Edmundson is weirdly overrated. Stay at home 3rd pairing making $3.5M for another year after this? Eye test is less than impressive, and I recall a couple of seasons ago his advanced stats were simply awful. Not sure if he's improved much since then, but being down the depth chart on a weak blueline suggests he hasn't had a renaissance.

hes a physical 3rd pairing D.

hes not worth his contract.

Disagree on both points. If he goes by the deadline, he's fetching more than a 2nd rounder. Maybe more picks, maybe a 1st, but he's far better than Kulak who fetched a 2nd.

Edmundson is easily worth more than a late 1st if we retain 50% for a playoff push + another full year. 1,75m$ for a top 4 defenseman is a bargain.

Hagel trade is a comparable I think .

He’s a bit better than Chariot, better 1st pass.
Also at 1.75 the list of teams interested would be big. No need to settle for The Habs. They can wait for the deal they like or even wait until next TDL

If his play tonight is any indication of where he's at, he's fetching somewhere around a 5th round pick.

So you want Edmundston for free + unload à cap dump? Nice try.
Well first i guess you have no clue what a cap dump is.
No i want to trade Edmundston to the Oilers and take a chance that St Louis can turn Puljujarvi around.

Very low IQ player, cant even produce with Mcdavid, I have 0 interest.

If Oilers dont want to part with their 1st, I would take Bourgault + a 2nd.

If they didn't want to move their 1st, you would take a prospect more valuable than said 1st as well as a 2nd?
Thats a strong draft and Edm could end up drafting in the 15-20 range, ending up with a better prospect than Bourgault. You could end up drafting guys like Oliver Moore, Reinbacher, Barlow ect.

Whichever way you slice it, Borgault + 2nd is more valuable than just the 1st. So it’s a worse counter.

Good luck. The guy has a muffin of a shot. Fans on it constantly. Falls without players around him. Zero confidence with the puck on his stick

Unless you're after a 3rd/4th liner that runs around and disrupts the play but at 3 million he's about 2 million overpaid for that role

Edmundson was top 4 in Stl when they won the cup, top 4 in CAR, and is top 4 for in MTL playing over 23min in is last two playoff, not sure if who this 3rd pairing guy you are talking about, Edmundson doesn’t may not bring much offense but very is reliable and the only reason he might be available is that mtl have 3 LD under 22yo which there might want to give more time in a throwaway season. 3.5M$ for 29yo that play 20min for is pretty decent in term of cap.

He is or he was? I like the idea of Edmundson but there sure seems to be a lot of red flags with him.

A #4 on a team that is bottom third of the league defensively can be reasonably assumed to be 3rd pairing on a team with cup aspirations. As I said, the eye test is less than impressive this season, and as others have said, his underlying numbers have been absolutely atrocious.

Also, he was 5th in TOP/GP for Canes defencemen.

Maybe he's really holding it down in Montreal, though.
