Of all the takes in this thread "this makes our blue line too soft" is probably the strangest. They are making this trade so that ARBER XHEKAJ stays in the lineup and won't be scratched.
Which is exactly the type of approach most fans want to see used.

Remember when Edmondson was supposed to be considered a top trade target for contending teams, and now we're trading him for nothing.
His back was already shot when people started having those dreams.

For sure, a third rounder, likely to be pick 70-90, for a guy that doesn't have a spot on this team going forward. There will be other guys available in August/September in the dumpster that will hold a similar value. It was a smart move.
It’s completely baffling to this writer why some here are sour about this deal. What were they expecting to get in return for an expensive defenceman in clear decline?

Why not hold Ed till the trade deadline???

Because last TDL he was hurt. And they didn't want to risk it this year.

They're taking a risk with Monahan. I don't think they wanted to take the same risk with two players.

Also moving Eddy creates room for the young guys. And Hughes said they're looking to move forwards also.

I'm a bit surprised, not by the retention or the return but I figured someone would've lost a D in training camp, mid year or at deadline and we could've gotten more for him.

At same time from a business perspective is it worth paying 1.75M to move from a 3rd and a 7th to a 2nd? Probably not. The return may have been slightly better down the line but the $ cost associated with it isn't worth it.

If you can't get something of value for a big D with retention, then keep him.

Because he will injure himself again and then you get nothing?

And you have to play him to showcase him, which means for a year you have to push down a D to Laval, like Xhekaj or Harris

Who cares? Losing out on a third isn't the end of the world.

Just more panic, selling this low on an asset is wildly bad asset management. They've gone off the rails.

Lol then you play Edmundson above our young kids and our own young assets depreciate. You think like BargainBin.

You don't have to. You can Wideman him into the sunset if he's terrible or play him on the right side where we're still missing depth. One thing you don't do is selling low on an asset with value to "let the kids play."

I wonder when people will stop snorting the copium around here. Should be interesting

The team is trying to unload his washed up vets in order to give their kids more responsabilities, Edmundston's back injury lowered his value and the odds he returns more than a 2nd rounder at the TDL are very low. Getting a 3rd at this point is fair value and will prevent to send a kid like Harris to Laval.

They had so much fun making weird picks at the draft this year, they just had to go and get more late picks for next year!

I think a 2nd rounder has exponentially more value than a 3rd. You wait till you can get that. If you can't, not the end of the world.

There is a good possibility Edmundson misses a substancial part of the calendar and we end up getting absolutely nothing for. We got Engstrom with a 3rd.

I guess people that are complaining about not waiting until the trade deadline haven't leant about the waiver wire yet?

Third rounders seldom make it as NHL regulars.

Huh? Where did I say that?
You're suggesting they should have waited until they hopefully get offered a 2nd right? Well until that time, one of Barron/Xhekaj/Harris couldn't play since there is no room.

Guhle/Matheson/Savard/Edmundson and then 2 of those young players I mentioned. So one of them won't be able to play and we still got Wideman and Kovacevic who need game time too.
