Who cares about retention. Habs are not competing for another 10 years at this rate. HuGo selected 4 times in the top 60 in 2 drafts in a rebuild year.

This management thinks it can build the only contender ever by not drafting talent.
Okay but that has absolutely no bearing on this thread. see Doom and Gloom.

Habs now have $490,000 in cap space with 23 players signed on the roster without putting Price on LTIR. If they want to make a Monahan deal like last season they could always put Price on LTIR opening up an additional $10.5 million in cap space.

They still have to sign Newhook and make at least one more transaction to be at the 23 player limit.

Passing on Michkov really broke peoples brains
Which is strange because the Newhook trade should be a far bigger cause for concern. Reinbacher was not my first choice i would have aimed for the fence with Mihckov but Reinbacher was my 2nd choice and let's be honest he pretty much settle our defence for many years to come.

Mailloux-Guhle
Hutson-Reinbacher
Barron-Xhekaj
Harris-Struble

The likelyhood for this to not become a rock solid defence is pretty much nonexistent.

I worry about the Newhook trade a lot more. I'm not sure Newhook showed the potential to become a high end offensive talent and atm this is what we need.

If we sell some vets and tank again next year we'll be able to grab the offensive talent in 2024 ... providing we don't trade the picks again for a risky project.

Would you move Matheson now if a big offer came along?

Another 1.75M in cap space for Hughes.

What's he going to do with over 10M in cap space?

Wasn't expecting to see this when I logged in but a pretty meh return especially with 50% retention but whatever. I guess possible injury concerns certainly didn't help his value here. Anyway good luck Big Ed.

by all accounts he fit into the 'atmosphere' Kent wanted here, not to mention size etc. If we are depleting out blueline, this should be another amazing year to watch the smurfs get pounded on for 82 games
Who cares how tall he is if he sucks

3rd and 7th is a bit underwhelming…

But he had to be moved, kind wonder why he wasn’t move at the last trade deadline because we didn’t had any room to start the season anyway…
Better to make the move early so it doesn’t drag on any longer than it has too.

Sign Newhook ofcourse, easily a 9.5 million dollar a year player.

but win all seriousness, after signing newhook and a roster player, maybe save it for a helping another team with cap space for 1st rounder type situation.

The Newhook trade and wasting draft picks on overagers with no upside are the two more worrying things for me

I mean, by all accounts he was healed up, I don't think he 'sucked' neither do the caps. My fear is we are going to be another 400 man games lost, and beaten down hard in the defensive zone, nothing has changed since last year, we are worse off at this point. He could eat 18 mins a night, we need help and we are paying him to leave anyways.

It will be interesting to see what high end offensive talent comes from 31 and 37. The odds are low a player of that caliber is available to begin with and then you have to hit on the right guy. There may be a player who is drafted later that ends up being better but the thing is it's not usually the player people thought it would be. Newhook will fill a need now and hopefully help our young centers progress.

would be nice to add a 1st, but hard to find a team willing to give one up...

If we're going to sign a player, we need to move a player out. We already have our 7 D's, 3 G's, and like 16 forwards.

Now, can they trade a couple of forwards??
who? how?

I'd think about it but both Matheson and Savard have been often injured in the last few years and ideally you want one vet in the lineup at least. I'd probably keep both for the next season at least. But Edmundson had to be traded and i'm happy KH saw that. Return is not great but it is what it is. We needed to make some room.

Xhekaj, Pezzetta and Guhle say "hi"

do you really want the kids dishing out all the hits again this year? You named 3 guys, all are basically rookies two are dmen. BTW Guhle is one of my favorite players, but he is by no means a huge dude, he is better served playing hockey than trying to be physical for 82 games. Arbur fills that physical role nicely however.

I mean maybe he couldve garnered a 2nd at the deadline if healthy, but thats a massive if considering his history. Taking the 3rd now is a smart move. Anyway, if Washington has another mediocre season it will be an earlyish third vs a late 2nd at the deadline.
