Confirmed with Link: Joe Thornton to Leafs [1yr/700k]

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
Alright now find a way to acquire Weegar and we are set. The whole culture in Toronto has shifted... hopefully the attitudes of BOGO, Simmonds, Thornton rub off onto Matthews and co.

Some fans share different philosophies on how the team we cheer for should be built.

Can you see Texas from up there?
A league minimum contract is a bad thing? He's not being signed to be the 1st line C. It's called depth. Now tell me, is depth a bad thing?

This has nothing to do with "how the team is being built." Jesus.

Keep proving my point though.

Well even still, neither Kerfoot or Spezza were better than Kadri.

Im not a big Kefoot fan, getting a late pick and signing a better defensive centre on the PK, better on faceoffs while bringing 30-40 points would be an upgrade on Kerfoot on the short term.
I pretty much agree. Thats what Id like on the third line too, but id rather hold onto kerfoot, hope he has a bounce back year, and move him next offseason when hopefully theres more of a market for guys like him. And other than Cirelli, dont see anyone available that I would say is definitely better than Kerfoot right now.

If they have something lined up and needed the cap space, id have no problem trading him. But would prefer someone better than Thornton to take his spot.

All these old guy signings remind me of the 2004 Leafs. So many big names. The big difference between that team and this team though is that the 2004 Leafs were a very old team overall and needed the old guys to be a big part of the team.

The 2021 Leafs main core is just hitting their primes and all these old guys are just there as role players coming in at basically the league minimum. I like it a lot. If it doesn't work out then you just cut them loose at that salary. There's absolutely no downside to this.
I was coming to say the same thang sire. This is just amazing. All those Pat Quinn memories came back sire. Wow, we are the biggest vet and thug team now sire  Next season is going to be so entertaining with all of our neauwendyk tucker corson domi roberts thomas sundin belfour action I'm sorry Joe Big Joe, Tavares, Simmonds, Bogosian, Spezza action I love it sire! We HAVE EARNED IT SO HARD! Congratulations to all of us fans and you fans how much RESPECT and FUN will it even be to SEE JOE THORNTON playing for the MAPLE LEAFS! Legendary dirt sire!

Sounds good.

I still question the Bogosian and Simmonds signing (though by no means hate them), but overall, I'm pretty satisfied how our team is shaping up:

I can't believe I'm reading this.

Anyway, I hope Leaf Fans temper their expectations. So many think that Jimmy Vesey is on the verge of carrying this team on his back. Can you imagine what type of statue they are going to be carving for Joe.?!

i think your throwing the few in with all. not many think vesey or thornton are more then 3/4th line depth tweeners on this team if they do more then great but if not they are 700 k or a bit more

Just a question to all you cheerleaders out there... Didn't we go through a rebuild so we could avoid the embarrassment of having veteran players from Toronto come here for their swansong?

I agree with the Spezza move, I don't mind the Simmonds move, or the even the Brodie move but this? How can we hope to afford Mikheyev and Dermott after this move? I would personally rather watch us sink or swim with players we drafted and developed, not over the hill veterans hoping for an Indian Summer.
If our youngsters can't beat these guys out.....then why complain? Obviously not ready.

Do you think move reflects some concern with Kerfoot at 3C?

Eh. I doubt it. I think Kerfoot had an up and down season, but of anybody on the team that did, he has a real excuse (played through a broken face). Looked excellent for the most part in the playoffs in the 3C role.

I could see Jumbo taking over the 3C role at times though if we think we need to move Kerfoot's cap, potential injuries, and also if Keefe wants to put Kerfoot on the wing in the top-6 at times.

Thornton still is a serviceable 3C, so I wouldn't be too mad about it.

Shouldn’t it really solidify that the leafs recognise they need leadership in the room?

and that at $700,000 who really gives a f***?

Jesus.
How much more leadership do they need? They already had Spezza, Tavares, Muzzin and Rielly. Not to mention, Joe's leadership abilities were criticised in Boston (he was young) and San Jose (stripped of the C). To add to that, people have questioned his heart his whole career.

Don't get me wrong, I like this signing because the guy is a big body that can still play at an okay level. And it's a zero-risk deal, given the term. I just think this whole leadership thing is being overblown

Depth means nothing. Quality depth means something. Signing older players is a gamble not matter how much they cost. We just traded 2 big pieces of our bottom six and got significantly slower and older.

I'd love for you to find one person that has said this.

I just don’t think talent has ever been an issue - leadership has. Maybe they are over doing it this off season but I sure as hell don’t hate it.

Well I hope he has something left in the tank, I’m not really excited about this move. That said, it’s not a core piece or big ticket, so the sky isn’t falling.
