A) If Seattle claims him, which they can't unless Wheeler waives his NMC, then the Jets get no compensation for it. He's just lost.

B) Wheeler had 65 points in 71 games this year and was trending upwards when the season ended.

I know we haven't had hockey in awhile but I don't think this play in series is going to result in franchise shifting decisions being made.

In this cap era, trade guys while they still have a lot of value and get more youth coming in.

The team has nothing left. The "lunch pale blue collar" type players aren't gonna get it done when our best players are injured or mia. This team isn't going anywhere this post season regardless. I'd rather play the odds for first overall pick.

I feel sad and a self loathing Jets fan.

No he can't - and Copp as much as I love the guy, is not going to drive the play that Connor can't.
I get why KC is taking a lot of flak - he's build his game around playing with one very good center his complete NHL career and now he's flailing in the wind. He's also tired - did I mention that earlier ;)

Good post - Connor is not going to get it done in the playoffs without a highly skilled center that plays his game. There is no doubt in my mind that he lost without Scheif out there. So is Wheeler and so would Laine BTW.

We've got to get some neutral ice speed for Connor to be effective, which is 2 consecutive tape to tape passes, on bad ice. I am watching him in the corners in one on one battles or one on two because our only defenseman who really jumps the play is Poolman, and he doesn't stand a chance. Flames have muscle on their back end.

I think if he had scored in game 2, he might have had a bit more hop in his step. It worked for Ehlers. I hope KFC delivers in game 4.

wheelers been crap through 3 games as. Have most Jets forwards, Copp, Ehlers, Lowry the only bright spots with honourable mention to Harkins!

I don't know how others feel, but Ehlers has been our best player by far this series, and Copp and Lowry have been good as well.

Ehlers should "never" be traded, as he and Scheifele are our best 2 players, along with Helle of course.

Well he’s really never used his speed defensively and other than on the back check, speed isn’t that necessary as a defensive skill in the first place. I really don’t blame Connor at all here. The expectations of him were going to be far too high as THE guy on the top line. If anything it’s more of an indictment of Wheeler who is supposed to be an elite set-up man that the two of them can’t get anything going. You can’t ask a player to be a play driver when that just isn’t within their skill set. Seriously, go back and watch any of Connor’s goals this season and see how many he created for himself. Hell, even watch his assists and see how many were him opening space for someone else. It’s very few. And that’s fine because he absolutely has a major role on this team, he’s just not a Panarin or a Patrick Kane or any of the very few elite play driving wingers.

If anything, this series highlights even further how good Ehlers is that he’s basically creating offence playing with absolutely no one (Kulikov’s amazing pass notwithstanding)

Such a great post here Chip, and it pretty much says it all, and what I think as well.

People do not realize how good of a player Ehlers is -- he can carry and drive the play all by himself -- Connor cannot do this.

To me -- Ehlers and Schiefele are the best we have. If I was GM, I'd look at shopping Laine around for a couple high 1st round draft picks, which would put us in a little of a rebuild situation. I know this would not be popular with many fans, but it would better the team. Let's not forget here, Laine will want around $ 9-10 mil per year ? does anyone think he's worth that kind of money ? -- I don't.

I wouldn’t trade Laine for a couple of reasons. I doubt you get full value for him and I’m confident the best is yet to come for him. He’s still extremely young. Connor may legitimately never have a season as good as this past one. If we have to trade a young winger, he would be the guy.
The rest I agree with.

What’s frustrating is that he doesn’t seem embarrassed in the least. He seems satisfied.

That's exactly right, and he doesn't seem embarrassed. The reason is he's covered for the next 5 years at $ 8.5 mil per season. I don't think he'll be the same player anymore -- no sense of urgency. We are going to have to eat that big contract of his --wait and see.

I wouldnt want 1st round picks i would want young established or near NHL ready players with upside. But i would be looking to try to move Wheeler to a contender for that type of a deal and hold onto Laine. I think if we are going to rebuild you do it correctly by moving out the older players for assets.

I wish I could be as sold as you and others are on Laine, but I'm not, but we do agree on the rest of the things. Let's hope Laine becomes the star player he was touted to be.

I would trade Laine though, and I'd get a couple great players for him, and just like yourself, I'd consider trading Connor as well -- but not Ehlers.

It's also important to consider Ehlers and Connor are very different players - it's not one or the other.
Ehlers can drive play but he needs line mates to help him finish - guys like Connor / Laine.
Same goes for Scheif - he needs elite talent on is wings to be at his best.

You don't rank your players based on the trait they do better than another - you consider what each of them brings and then consider that all parts make up the package.
