Rumor: Jesse Puljujarvi Part 3: Maybe He Picked Out His Brain Through His Nose One Lick at a Time?

That is the problem. Jesse appears unwilling to accept any sort of bottom 6 role, which is where Holland says he will start with the Oilers and he can earn his way into the top 6.

Guy just thinks he's better than he really is and he needs to realize he's not that.

Craig Simpson said in an Oilers Now ep, IIRC I think early in the year when the team seemingly lost it with JP. You have to wonder how much of it is hurting JP inside seeing his buddies Aho and Laine succeed and him not even able to crack the line up consistently.

If only he just listened and played the role assigned to him, he'd earn more leeway with the coach

A very common theme amongst Oilers on and off the ice.

Which is weird because he said all last season how happy he was playing in a defensive role on the 3rd line with Strome for a large chunk of the first half of the season.

When will that travesty of a jersey go away?

I think Jesse will end up being just fine. He's not Yakupov; he definitely has good defensive IQ

He has a lot of work to do with his offensive positioning and meshing with other players. But the Oilers have been trying to force a square peg into a round hole. He’s never been a net crasher or a grinder. He’s a puck carrier and distributor who has a cannon one timer from the point. It really seems like they knew nothing of the player they drafted and tried to force him into a role that isn’t his strengths instead of playing him in a role that fits his strengths. Not saying everything is all the Oilers fault (like other posters will claim) just that we have seen for years how the Oilers have failed prospects. They failed Jesse, and yes he obviously failed the team.

Up to 50% of the salary and not more than 100000 euros can be put aside in savings bonds for hockey players. No tax is paid before the career is over for that amount.
Puljujärvi said today that if he doesn't get a NHL contract, he will play for Kärpät and money is not an issue. Kärpät and his agent haven't discussed that option yet. I think that if he ends up there he is not going to earn so much. The salary might be less than 200K. Nobody knows how good he will be and the budget for players is something like 3 millions. There cannot be much left. Of course they might attract new sponsors which would allow them to pay more but if he says that he wants to play there no matter what he earns, then this year might be an investment for him.

"Is it possible that he'll play for Edmonton next season? Better not speculate that now, Lehto says."

His agent is completely out of his mind. What.

Does that mean basically “no comment” or “not likely” sounds more like he doesn’t want to speculate right now.

Maybe it’s the translation but would be cool to have a Finnish poster gives his interpretation.

Well I am Finnish and basically that means no comments, but looking back at the previous strict statements of his (which he turned backwards later on), that seems like he doesn't have a clue what is going on anymore and no opinions either. I guess they just wait for a call out of the blue.

I get the sense that he meant it literally. Like he really just didn't want to speculate. Basically I don't know if it differs that much from "No comment".

Cheers, thanks.

Yeah really nothing that his agent says leads you believe he knows what he is doing. What a tire fire.

Certainly Jesse and Jesse's agent bear responsibility in this as well. However as you say trying to force a square peg in a round hole has been a theme with the Oilers going back to Yakupov and Paajarvii. You can blame the player all you want for not changing the way you want him to but it's up to the organization to draft a player, develop him, and get the most out of him and clearly the Oilers don't have a very diverse recipe book in that regard.

Until the f***ing moron traded him.

I've got a question regarding Puljujarvi's situation.

I keep reading that if an NHL team would take him on, he would not be waiver-exempt and would therefore basically have to stay on the NHL roster all season long, because his team would lose him for nothing if he got picked up on waivers by someone else.

But could an AHL team sign him to an AHL-only contract? Is it technically possible at all that an AHL team makes a trade with an NHL team? For example, the Marlies trading a couple of decent prospects to Edmonton for Puljujarvi in return?

Or would it be technically possible for, say, the Leafs to make a trade with Edmonton including Puljujarvi, and have him sign for the Marlies?

Thanks in advance.

JP finished his entry level contract, and the Oilers have retained his rights, so his new contract must be a 1 way, or 2 way contract. In JP's situation, if he signs a 1 way contract (which all players want), he must clear waivers before being sent down to the minors, and the Oil could lose him for nothing if he is claimed by another team. If he signs a 2 way contract (which players do not like), the Oil are free to demote him to the minors at any time *EDIT* Must clear waivers

Maybe getting the most out of Jesse starts with the third line in a defensive role? Maybe getting him to use his size and crash the net (where he's had success), to help his confidence is a good place to start?

Maybe Jesse should've listed to the NHL coaches with decades of experience who really wanted to put him in a situation to succeed?

I'm pretty sure that two way contracts only change the monetary situation if you are sent down.

A player still has to clear waivers.

Wrong. Oilers aren't trying to turn him into a net crasher. You're exaggerating the sentiment. They are asking him to go to the net when it makes sense. To cycle, and rotate w/ teammates. Basic hockey. For his size ,going to the net is an expectation, for any player.

Too funny how from day 1 someday posted" he will either be Teddy Purcell, or Blake Wheeler"

That statement couldn't have turned out any truer.

So to say the Oil are trying to transform him into something he isn't is just ridiculous. They are asking to play simple hockey

Thanks for your reply, but I'm afraid it raises even more questions.

Colby Cave is on a two-way-contract. How come we picked him up off waivers last season?

And wouldn't teams want to sign all their lower-end players to two-year-contracts with the AHL pay just a tiny bit lower than the NHL pay if that automatically granted waiver exemption?

I'm confused... :help:

I would not hire that agent in any case. Since April he has nothing but torpedoed Jesse´s possibilities to play at NHL level, of course it is players fault who he chooses to work with, but now things look bad. Luckily that agent is losing money too.

For me it is great that there is possibility to see Jesse playing for Kärpät, but I would prefer seeing him on NHL. Disappointed on many levels.

That's a popular wrong idea about two-way contracts because of the EA Sports games.

A two-way contract only means the player has a separate salary when playing in the AHL. It doesn't affect the player's waiver status.

It’s been rumored that he was upset being sent to the AHL (although he happily went last year and was very positive about it...) so I doubt he’d sign an AHL contract. Not sure if it’s possible but a decent thought for sure.

Thanks for taking my post completely out of context and ignoring the obvious truths that were included in it.

I didn’t make the part about them wanting him to go harder to the net up. It was TMac’s biggest issue with him, which made it obvious that he didn’t know anything about JP and his game.

I won’t deny that he needed work on the boards and cycling. Pretty sure I have pointed that out myself multiple times in JP threads.

The biggest problem with JP's game is nobody had a clue where his game was at the NHL level. His draft sheet had him as a good skater and puck carrier with hard shot but he never handled the puck with grace or confidence and was seldom at the right spot to take advantage of his shot. Also, guy never really used his size to his advantage.
In hindsight, that's probably why TMac had to suggest the most basic shit for him. Until the coaching staff was confident enough that they had a serviceable NHLr, be it bottom or top 6, they had to work in the fundamentals. I suppose leash couldve been longer but with a team [and fan base] starving for wins, they can't really let him 'experiment'

Too bad for the team, JP thought he knew better.
