A two-way contract only means the player earns a lower salary when playing in the AHL.Thanks for your reply, but I'm afraid it raises even more questions.
Colby Cave is on a two-way-contract. How come we picked him up off waivers last season?
And wouldn't teams want to sign all their lower-end players to two-year-contracts with the AHL pay just a tiny bit lower than the NHL pay if that automatically granted waiver exemption?
I'm confused...
Waiver eligibility is determined by the player's age and games played in the NHL.

Puljujarvi signed his ELC when he was 18-years-old. He would be waivers-exempt for five years or until he played 160 NHL games (whichever came first). But:
He played 28 games as an 18-year-old, so he would now lose his exemption after his third year (this past season).
- There is an exception for 18 and 19 year olds:
- If an 18 or 19 year old skater plays 11 NHL games or more, the year exemption will reduce to 3, and the following two season will count against these 3 years regardless of games played.
Colby Cave signed a three-year ELC in April 2015 when he was 20. Due to his age he was exempt from waivers for only three years. He became waivers-eligible after the 2017-18 season.
