Rumor: Jesse Puljujarvi Part 3: Maybe He Picked Out His Brain Through His Nose One Lick at a Time?

All very fair points. You’d see a glimpse of his abilities every once and a while but could never put it together consistently for the level required in the NHL so far. Another reason why I feel it would have been so much better for him to rehab his knee injury fully his first year, stay in Finland then a year in the AHL to learn about the American game and then make last season his rookie NHL season. Unfortunately it appears the player, his agent and the Oilers all were greedy and wanted to rush things. Hell Chia was banking on a young 18 year old Puljujarvi to replace a big chunk of Taylor Hall’s production, so you know the Oilers wanted him here that first year.

He was physically ready but didn't understand the game well enough. That is one problem that NHL organizations have that they mainly look if someone has the body for NHL or not. Of course he should have gone back to Kärpät for 1-2 seasons. He could have played 9 games for the Oilers and then returned to Finland but all parties honestly were probably thinking that he will learn when he plays with the best players in the world in North America.

There has been a lot of discussion in Finland about the right age to go to NHL. Jukka Koivu, the dad of Saku and Mikko, told that they had a rule in family that boys don't leave before they are at the international level in mens. On the other hand there are many people who think that you have to go there as soon as possible and because there have been examples where some players (e.g. Barkov) have made an impact immediately even without playing in AHL, these voices have become louder. I think it was a blessing in disguise that Miro Heiskanen got injured and couldn't attend the Dallas training camp. He stayed one year in Finland after the draft, absolutely dominated in the league and played well even in the national team. When he went to NHL he was much more ready than he would have been one year before. Jesse's situation is a good reminder to us. Not every player is ready when he is 18 yo. even when he has a giant body.

I don't even think a couple extra years in Finland would have helped.

Jesse seems to have an idea of what "his game" is and stubbornly won't change or add anything to it despite it not working at all at the NHL level.

A couple years of success in Finland playing that game might have actually compounded the issue even more, IMO.

It depends on the coach here. Maybe a Finnish coach can explain him things better because then he would understand what is told. During the world championships 2017 he wasn't good and the national team coach Marjamäki said that Jesse needs coaching because he has been in the AHL where it had been like whistlening.
Marjamäki muistutti Puljujärven kaipaavan valmennusta AHL-kauden "viheltelyn" jälkeen

Marjamäki coached for example Joonas Donskoi who was immature and not ready for NHL after Florida drafted him. Some more years work including showing the player what to eat and how to do training, then the player was ready.

So it would seem that the player once known as Pool Party has now become Pool Pouty. :D :help:

Seriously....go to Europe and play for $200,000 (US). Leave $500,000 (US) on the table.
If Jesse is willing to take a step back in order to take 2 steps forward later on then its a good move for his career.

I dont see it playing out that way but time will tell I guess.
I think he is a fool and he has played his hand about as bad as it can be played.

As it stands right now the team will be better without him on the roster. Jesse going to Europe is actually a good move for the team.

Yet you attack me for saying that Todd isn’t a great coach or that Chia was a crappy GM, and say that I’m losing credibility for saying such things. While completely ignoring how most things I have actually said about JP in any post you referenced were me being critical of JP...Neat.
Calling your BS isn’t an attack. You say things as fact that is clearly made up. Neat.

At the very least, he won't be a distraction

That's all that I care about.
And what do you think Jesse should only care about about in this situation? There’s always two parties and two points of view for this kind of situations. I’m not really a fan of Jesse, as I saw his lack of hockey IQ clearly pretty soon after his WJC MVP success, while watching him play in Liiga that season. But to not see that Jesse should as well have only the interest in what is best for him in the end is pretty funny.

The biggest problem in my opinion has been though that neither party has been doing enough for finding mutual interests and mutually agreed means to achieve them. Part of this is absolutely because of Jesse being immature, clearly not the sharpest tool in the shed and not getting too good advice from his supporting crew. But very similar faults have happened also with how the Oilers organization has been doing things.

Chiarelli was a disaster in so many ways, and also McLellan and Hitchcock are both atrocious coaches for any teams in the present NHL. So clearly both sides have made massive mistakes. Another question is also if Jesse was ever as talented as most of the people were believing in the first place? I tend to believe that he wasn’t, especially if he will not considerably mature as a person and first of all clearly develop his hockey IQ (hard to develop it very substantially when you are already clearly over 20 years old).

I see hockey IQ as the clearly most important single ability for hockey players, and the amount of it is the thing that really decides if a player will become a true star at the NHL level. So I’m unfortunately quite doubtful if Jesse will ever become an over 50 points per season player, even if he is traded to any other team in the league. But anyway it looks like a fresh start somewhere else will still be beneficial to both, Jesse and the Oilers.

Not likely beneficial to either. The Oilers are going to wind up with very little or possibly nothing at all, while Jessie is in all likelihood throwing away his only opportunity to play in the NHL, something that many others strive for and never get.

Well if that is really the case (which I’m not sure about yet), then at least both parties can get closure and continue with whatever is best for them after leaving their mutual failiar behind. Even that would be better for both, than to continue in a situation like it has been for the last two years.

Well Jesse it’s time for you to either put up or shut up. Go put up massive amounts of points in Europe and impress what teams might have any interest in you in the next year.

I hope you truly can bet on yourself to improve, because if you don’t then enjoy being on the biggest bust lists for the next 50 years.

Haha, he just shared a video of him getting laughed at for licking his nose-hole in the dressing room on Instagram.

Sounds like he just turned 6 years old. What a f***ing idiot.

On another note TSN Leafs Lunch said yesterday it’s not about his team mates, it’s about the “organization”. He hates the “organization” which has literally turned over its entire senior management team including the GM who is perhaps the most respected GM in the league and 3 of 4 coaches. A most mature stance.

So one can only imagine he dislikes the color orange or he doesn’t like our logo.

The more I read and hear about this utter fool the more he sounds like he should be playing with his tinker toys and hot wheels and choo choo trains rather than wasting his time playing hockey.

A Finnish Fool.

To be fair. Jessie has been successfully used in a top 6 offensive role his whole career.

We have a massive hole in our top 6. Especially on RW. And this organization has not put him in that position.

The Oilers have a long list of young top 6 wingers who have been given complete freedom to play their game.

Wingers don't even need to be that responsible. See Hall and Eberle. Puljujarvi imo was not given the same opportunities that most organizations would have. He was most certainly treated differently. He had no leash whatsoever.

Maybe because he is an idiot. Maybe because of language. But from what I saw on the ice it had little to do with his play.

I personally think they intentionally held him back because of cap implications. If Puljujarvi was as good as he "could/should" have been the Oilers would not be able to afford him.

Even with Tippett and Holland the Oilers made it very clear they had no intention of playing him in the top 6. Holland publicly stated as much. Stupid move imo.

Judging by all these reports, sounds like JP just doesn't want to put effort into earning a top 6 role and still wants shit given to him on a silver platter. Someone should remind him he's still not a very good NHLr...

Dude, not sure who were watching but the play died on Jesse's stick 99% of the time he got the puck. He can't pass or receive a pass and his release is horribly slow and easy to read.

Along with his strange skating gait it was pretty embarrassing to watch. If he produced it would be different.

Fact is he got more opportunity than he deserved because of his draft posistion.

You think the Oilers intentionally held him back to fit under the cap? Thats a new one. Nah he just sucks (by NHL standards). Hence why no one really wants him. I hope for his and the oilers sake it's a confidence issue which it could very well be.

The Oilers will do anything to try to make the playoffs, including countless mindnumbingly stupid panic trades. They would of loved for him to put up 20-25 goals playing on one of the 3Cs wings.

What is this post.

Yes the Oilere intentionally ruined his career and Holland and Tippett are stupid for not penciling in a guy who doesn't have a contract, doesn't want to play for us and was the worst person on every line he was on last year, as a top 6 guy.

Hahaha

Seriously the guy with the camera (Komarov) was panning across the guys (Laine, Aho, Barkov and other NHLers) sitting at their stalls in the dressing room and Jesse made a funny face to the camera...yeah...what a f***ing idiot...

I don’t want to be part of your club anymore if that’s your reaction to someone having a second of fun while sitting around with his buddies after some ice time.

I totally get what you’re saying about how Jesse is being unreasonable with not giving Holland and Tippet a chance. But the Oilers have shuffled out many GMs and coaches over the last 13 years and really not much has changed. The culture is still the same. Bobby Nicks is still running the show and Lowe, Howson and the OBC is still very much there. Hell they fired MacT, yet I’m willing to bet they drafted a couple of players specifically because MacT will be their coach in Russia next year. Hopefully in a few years, if things don’t improve, Holland takes over for Bobby Nicks and and appoints a heir and there is a real culture change or an “Oil Change”. Maybe they can make a TV show about it  (what a joke that was)

Again not trying to say Jesse is justified (if what TSN Leafs Lunch is saying is true) just that it’s easy to understand someone not trusting that anything has really changed because Oilers. Jesse has zero leverage or input and what he says or feels really doesn’t matter in the end as he’s a RFA and his rights are controlled.

I'm so tired of hearing this false narrative.

Pulju has spent ~1100 of his ~1600 5v5 minutes since entering the league in the top6 with McDavid, RNH or Drai and another ~300 minutes in the top9 with Strome.

Putting up a measly P/60 that was matched by basically every other winger who played with those guys doesn't mean he was having success. Especially when he was turning the puck over half the time he would try to carry it through the neutral zone and was a complete non-factor in puck retrieval.

It had everything to do with his play. He wasn’t good enough and didn’t bring it consistently from shift to shift or game to game. Sometimes even week to week.

If they were worried about cap implications they would have left him in Finland for a year and then the AHL for a year to develop. Instead Chia banked on him being NHL ready and replacing Hall on the top line the day he was drafted. Add in that Chia and TMac obviously didn’t see eye to eye on the roster or player use and it didn’t turn out well at all.

Yep. For years now I've wondered if he's somehow been left behind in terms of mental development or something. It's tough to believe he's supposed to be an adult. From the earlier interviews you got the impression that he needed everything handed to him and looks at everything from an angle of whether he's being treated unfairly or not, rather than whether he himself would need to work on some things. English's a good example - in 3 years, anyone should be able to get to at least a good to excellent conversational level, especially when living in the country.

You get the sense of a spoiled brat, which is very strange considering he's supposedly been living without his parents since 13. Perhaps because of that he seems to behave like someone who's spent his entire youth in the jungle.

Does playing with Lucic or Khaira and RNH really qualify as top 6 minutes?

That more like a 2nd line center and a 4th line plug. Ugh poor Nuge.

His P/60 was quite average. His G/60 while playing with either of Drai or McDavid in his first two seasons was quite good though.

But yeah his puck handling was poor and clumsy, and his board work was terrible, and still well below average in an area he should excel at considering his size.

Been watching hockey for years.

Guys like Hall and Ebs were extremely tough to watch defensively. Both as bad or worse than Puljujarvi at most the things people are complaining about.

Puljujarvi production playing with talent is solid. He has never been given prime PP time like Eberle, Hall, Mcdavid, and Draisaitl did. And Puljujärvi has approximately as much pedigree on the PP as those guys did entering the league.

It shocks me how willingly blind people are to how different Puljujarvi was treated compared to other young talented wingers.

Hell, Gagner was putrid defensively and he was used as a top 6 center his whole time on the Oilers.

If Puljujärvi was used like Gagner was I wouldn't be surprised if he was far better than him. Even playing center.

Maybe its because he's shown to be poor on the PP in practice at the NHL level?
Guy just isn't a good enough NHLr for the Oilers to risk giving him a top 6 role.

Sure Hall and Ebs were poor defensively but offensively, they were miles ahead of what JP has accomplished.
