Jersey Ads

How are they ruining the viewing experience if you can't see them
What do you mean can't see them? Sure you will have a hard time reading the ads from a standard broadcast viewing angle, but there are several slow-motion and zoomed-in camera angles that are used constantly during and in between play.

They didn't put money on these patches thinking people wouldn't see them, that's silly.

The majority of the time you wouldn't be able to see them anyway. I know I'd be watching from very high up and you struggle enough to see a player, I know damn well I isn't seeing small ad on a jersey.

I think with the advent of ads in sports this is one of the least significant issues affecting sports especially when many other sports and even leagues internationally use ads. We should be lucky we have not reached the European level.

Ahl by the way has had ad sponsors for their jerseys for years and nothing bad has happened. I firmly believe any outrage over these "ads" is unwarranted.

The AHL is a minor league doing minor league things, what a revelation.
It's really not that big a deal. Maybe if the ad was like a soccer jersey blatantly on the front then I might take some umbrage but as it is at this point I shrug my shoulders.

Can someone explain why a small ad is so offensive now? The same ads used by the NBA and mlb?

NOT ALL NBA Patches are ads though..... teams have used the traditional black patch to honor past players and now the season-long celebration to honor Bill Russell will likely remove some of that ad from the jersey

What are you talking about? Every nba tea has a sponsor for their jersey and has had one for years. Nobody has complained since they came out

**** that. Better keep that crap off jerseys they sell to fans.
Good news is they will!

WHY ARE U Defending NBA Teams that's not always been a sponsor ad for NBA Teams until recently... the point is.... not all teams use sponsor ads when the black stripe is being used

The NBA has even said the Bill Russell patch for this season is for the right shoulder (sponsorship is on the left).

See they'd never turn down ad revenue. The patches you mentioned go in addition to the ad.

I get people are frustrated but face it it's the time we live in. Adapt or get left behind.

Teams are already desperate enough as is, you'll see more these patches in the NHL.

I don't find the advert patches offensive (though I find it odd they are literal patches).

But I come from Australia where sponsorship on jerseys is common place, so I may be used to it. Here is the AFL (Aussie Rules) and NRL (Rugby League):

I could deal with the ads on the boards, the ice, and the digital ones on the glass, as well as the quick ads between whistles and the sponsored stuff for like powerplays or the save of the game...etc. But a line was crossed the moment they put them on helmets, and now jerseys. And as many have said, this is likely just the beginning.

The only conceivable way that this could be a good thing for growing the sport is if it brings down the prices of merchandise, tickets, and concessions to a point where more people can afford to go to games and buy merchandise to lure in new fans. I tried to hold back the laughter when typing that last sentence but I simply could not.

There isn't anything good about this. I guess unless you're one of the millionaires/billionaires hoping to add another digit to their net worth because they certainly need it during these tough times.

I'm just glad my Blues were able to lift the Cup for the first time before all this nonsense. I'm just imagining Pietro lifting the Cup and there's a green Enterprise logo on one shoulder, Stifel on the other, and Budweiser written across the bottom. Yuck.

I wonder if new player statues will have ads on their uniforms to reflect what they wore during their playing time? What about banners raised to the rafters? 10 years ago it seemed near impossible there'd ever be jersey ads. We thought he league would never do something like that to something sacred. Now it's not farfetched to think the same could happen to statues and banners. Time will tell.

Any way you slice it, this is a dark time for the sport.

"it's just an ad on the glass behind the goalie. That's it. It won't be more than that."
1 year later
"It's just an ad on the helmet. So small. That's it. Stop exaggerating"

"It's just an ad on the jersey. That's it. So many conspiracy theorists."

A million times this! Said so two years ago when they were starting to talk about this more and more.

Soccer teams have huge sponsors logos right in the middle of their chests and tiny team logo on the upper left side.

But most soccer teams, similar to the AFL and NRL examples posted above, traditionally did not have logos on their uniforms; the colours and pattern are what made them distinguishable from each other. So in a lot of ways it 'made sense' for the sponsor logo to go in the middle (and I think the EPL in particular goes overboard) because they weren't moving anything out of the way for it.

While I'll never say never with hockey jerseys becoming festooned with ads, it would be a much harder choice to make as the focus of every team's jersey is the crest/logo in the centre and it would have to be moved to accomodate the ad.

Y'all going ballistic over ads you don't even see when you watch a game. I know it's not just that but that iNtEgRiTy stuff just doesn't work in today's world. Nothing's sacred anymore and we better get used to it.

Stop defending this BS. There is absolutely no reason for fans to ever argue that ads are good. None. It doesn’t benefit us in any way. I am not shilling for billionaire owners and millionaire players to make more money.

According to Sports Business Journal, Keith Wachtel, senior executive vice president and chief business officer for the NHL, said the league is pleased with the early results and that the 32 teams are on pace to generate “significantly more” than $100 million based on average fees thus far. “The revenue generation for the clubs that have secured sponsors has outperformed our expectations,” he said.

I'll be in favor of ads on jerseys when someone can show me how doing so lowered my ticket price.
