I think thats probably the reasoning, but I'm not sure it makes much sense. Why is next season going to be so much better?

I don't know because I'm not convinced it will be, but they might be banking on; continued improvement in Buch, Mika and Skjei; the addition of 1/both of Andersson and Chytil; ADA making the team; everyone else maintaining their current level

I've no problem with trading Stepan...
But you're losing a 55p player with NO replacement. ... but you want to make the playoffs? If they wind up trading for a center to salvage this season that would be awful...

His scoring was replaced by signing Shattenkirk. It was replaced by Zib and Buch both taking a step forward.

Last year we were 4th in the league in scoring at 3.09 goals per game. This year we are currently tied for 7th in scoring at 3.24 goals per game.

Our issue this year, as it was last year, is keeping the puck out of our own net.

We just won - winning without Zib and Stepan. I asked someone to step up this morning before we start playing, and the Miller line had 4 pts, J.T 1 assist, Grabner a 3 goal champ, and Henrik was a god in the net for us this morning. I don`t see Gorton panic trading for a center now while both Lias & Chytil developing quite nicely for us. Ryan Mc. had a very good game after his injury too - he looks much quicker, and Skjei and Shattenkirk had both great games too.
And if we miss playoffs Gorton will join the lottery for Rasmus Dahlin or a very high skilled winger - so we might end up with Rasmus in the 2018 draft. :)

JG needs to get some heat for the current state of the team.
He isn't doing anything about it.

He's doing exactly what he needs to be doing to keep this team competitive. You may not like his plan, but he most certainly has one.

In his own words..This is a "Re-tool"

He fully expected to bring in players that weren't capable of handling the positions they were signed/forced into.
He also expected Andersson and Chytil to step in and make an immediate impact.

Has he ever done anything to supplement winning roster the wining roster he already had?
Has he addressed this nightmare of a coaching job by AV?

No..Instead he refuses to look at the obvious and just blame it on the assistants yet here we are three assistants later and only worse than we were yesterday.

Has even so much as addressed getting a gritty 4th liner?

If this guy has a so called "plan"..It's been a complete failure of EPIC proportions..

So much of this is just you assuming things are truth and assuming that you know exactly what's going on behind the scenes.

I could say that without a shadow of a doubt Gorton is not oblivious to the on-ice state of the team. I could say that Gorton knows how bad AV and his system is and has been for this iteration of the team and is purposefully keeping him on as HC in hopes of the wheels actually falling off and getting us a higher pick of our own, while trading the likes of Nash/Grabner/Zuke/whoever to get as many 1st/2nd round picks as possible to load up for what is purported to be a very strong, deep draft. Does that make everything I said true? No, and I don't think there's a single person who posts on this board who actually knows what's going on with the team. This season is beyond lost at this point, what do you want him to do? What roster move would make you feel peachy keen? Getting that 4th line grinder with 3 of our top 6 players out? That would make games more bearable? I somehow doubt that.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy (or don't enjoy) the ride.

I'm sitting back but I'm certainly not enjoying the ride lol

This guy has done absolutely nothing to help the present condition of this team.

He's a ghost..

It isn't always about today.

When you inherit the roster he did?
Agree to disagree but it most certainly is.
There's no reason why you can't build up the farm up while this train wreck derails.
It's beside the point IMO

Jeff Gorton is the worst GM in Rangers history and that includes trader Phil...once he salary dumped Hagelin I was done with this guy...that single trade in bizarre fashion vaulted the penguins into a dynasty and set the Rangers back to the stone age...he is a horrible GM

Hagelin had to be traded. He isn’t worth his salary

And he has been good for half a season since he left the Rangers.

Sure the return didn’t work out, but saying Hagelin’s trade set up a Pens dynasty and sent the Rangers back to the Stone Age is lunacy

While GMs are important, the ownership of this team is the real issue. These teams are big business and NYC is a gigantic market. Ownership does not care about Stanley Cups because they make so much money from their corporate "fans." Sure they love when the team trickles into the playoffs and gives them that playoff revenue, but that is the ONLY reason. Dolan will NEVER EVER EVER EVER let this team tank and rebuild.

Even during the dark ages of 99-04 where the team did not make the playoffs, it was never a lottery team (OMG did they blow it with Brendl and Lundmark). They just kept throwing money at names and they still got that corporate $$$. It will never change. The team is worth too much.

What pissed me off about that Hagelin trade was he didn't even consult with Hagelin to see if he would take a home town discount. He just up and traded him with NO communication. That was the beginning of the end of this team's identity.

This is exactly why tanking won't work with this organization. They have NO idea how to do drafting.

He inherited a team with almost no assets in the pipeline and a decaying core. Thats not even taking into account the rash of injuries this season. Out of anybody in the organization, Im willing to give him the most time to straighten things out. The Brassard and Stepan deals were promising in terms that he gets the team needs to build towards the future after so many near-sighted "win now" moves dating back t0 2012.

IMO his worst mistakes so far were the Staal trade, which is still such a head scratcher since he's been so good after, and keeping AV on all this time. Team is turning over, AV's strategies aren't really working - perfect time for a new coach.

Otherwise I think he's been good. I don't know how people can complain about his drafting when we have both of our first round picks in the AHL already in their post draft year, with Chytil putting up very good numbers for his age.

As for the Hagelin deal, NYR got Hagelin's peak years very obviously. Turned a 6th round pick into an excellent depth player who they got the peak years of and then moved on from before he became overpaid. I loved him when he was here too, but time goes on and players get worse. He's significantly worse than he was when he was here.

Thought his biggest deals, moving Step and Brassard, were both great.

I would agree with this. You are seeing first hand what happens when you trade 4 1st rounders, and who can recall how many other picks?

Spot on. Though I do wonder if the AV extension is not Sather's directive. Sather has always wanted to relive the Oiler days. And in AV, he found a coach that will want nothing but pond hockey.
