What are Coffeys qualifications? Because it sounds like he’s actually running the team.

This could sound controversial but Gretzky is not generally speaking, intelligent. For sure he's not articulate. Some people can have savant skills in certain kinds of areas but others are intelligent generally speaking. For Instance I went to same school as Messier. Extremely bright, could've pursued anything. Coffey was his equal in the room.

Coffey sometimes wasn't well liked by Oilers fans of the time because he was one of the first figuring out the Oilers players were getting robbed contractually. Mess and Coffey were among the first holdouts here.

One of them, I could name who, appeared during the arena debates and posted tons here during the whole arena saga and did the same on other boards. The org actually hired some guys as influencers on social media. Like this is China or something.

Soon as the final arena negotiations were concluded the one topic posters disappeared. It was so evident too. the one guy would have every arena update first. Where you think he was getting that?

That's small potatoes. The standard playbook everywhere is to find a willing media toady to carry the PR load through their medium. Today that is Eric Francis in Calgary and pretty obvious who bellied up to the gravy train for Edmonton's 'free market' guy.

I would say, and others would too that Woody was fired with a 2-9-1 record before Seattle game and that this is the necessary course. Whatever one thinks about Woody it was untenable staying the course. This is standard in pro sports and a results based business. If the bottomline is sinking people get fired. In Pro sports thats coaches and managers before high priced players who are the actual assets of the org.

If the Flames managed to hire this guy the board would implode. Coffey was the best Defenseman of his era, indisputably.

My own speculation is Coffey is a short-term fix that enables Knoblauch flexibility to create his own staff this off-season. Easier to pivot with Coffey than others likely expecting to negotiate term.

This just isn't the case. Especially being paired with a complimentary D like Huddy. But Coffey skated miles, could cover back better than anybody given his speed, and he often handled 2 on 1's impeccably. He was gifted all over the ice. Anybody looking for something to denigrate Coffey with were saying the bolded. I was at the games. His reads and reactions were excellent. has to be remembered that Coffey was incredibly productive offensively. He evaluated on a risk/reward basis and jump would be on because thats where he was predatory. Its natural he would jump plays as he was the best in the business at it.

Okay but none of that explains his qualifications to fix this dumpster fire defense. There are plenty of smart people in the world of hockey.

The org is chronically about least effort possible. So that Coffey was here, around, and so that the avaiability and connection of him is part of it. Not saying thats good, and this has all the looks of Nepotism at face, but that doesn't preclude that Coffey could actually be good in the role.

Nah. I’m sure familiarity with McDavid was part of the decision process, but I dont think that’s the main and only reason he was hired. Knob has been on the Oilers radar for years it seems.

Gonna disagree here. Lets see. Offseason Connor Brown, Jackson, now McD's Junior coach. I mean at some point its pretty clear. Its about as clear as anything gets. As fans we never here all of what is going on. But those 3 alone and McD stating he was involved in them removes it from just being assumption.

What I am saying is that you cannot assume 97 himself is doing this. Sure it might look weird if the org is doing it, but it is probably the Org that is doing it. In the end, none of us know, but it is obvious that they are trying to appease him.

In most places, that would be considered a good thing. It happens in sports for top athletes. It can backfire if you do not make good decisions (Connor Brown thus far).

I don't think people are lining up for their careers to be ended by the Oilers.
