Gretzky was the best player in NHL history and did not fare well as a coach

What are Coffeys qualifications? Because it sounds like he’s actually running the team.
In life, just because something happened over there, doesn't mean it will happen over here. You have to pivot, try new things, etc. Experienced coaches get recycled all of the time and suck too. If they were all sure things, they would be like teachers. Coach 30-40 years and then retire.

There is no set formula. Every team has different strengths and weaknesses.

What is my assumption? it‘s crystal clear that he got the gig because of the mcdavid connection
So you think it is a bad move that the incoming coach KNOWS a bunch of players and how they play? Interesting.

If only some here could just do the same. They just want to bitch, whine, moan all day lol
If we ever win a cup under McDrai era, the very same people will probably find a negative out of it somehow

Likely any other coaches, without direct ties to the organization already or people within it, turned it down first.
I don't think people are lining up for their careers to be ended by the Oilers.
Eakins, McLellan, and Tippett all found jobs elsewhere. Even Chiarelli found a landing spot after the Oilers.

NHL managers take care of their own. Once you're in the club you will have a way to make good money for a long while.

Cant help but feel a bit bad for Jay. It feels a bit like a desperation move. They played well in Seattle, they played pretty well in several losses. McDavid is injured, something is going on with Draisaitl.
The roster is still the same, the defense still suck, goaltending still suck. Maybe Skinner can find his game again?
Good luck changing Nurse, good luck changing Bouchard.
Just gotta wait and see now I guess.

What I am saying is that you cannot assume 97 himself is doing this. Sure it might look weird if the org is doing it, but it is probably the Org that is doing it. In the end, none of us know, but it is obvious that they are trying to appease him.

In most places, that would be considered a good thing. It happens in sports for top athletes. It can backfire if you do not make good decisions (Connor Brown thus far).
Fair comments. But hockey is a team sport. You gotta have team buy in, not like Basketball where 2-3 players are running everything on the court and possibly otherwise.

Hockey as much as any sport requires a room to all be agreed.

What made Connor Brown most egregious as an offseason addition is that we already had org players trying to get more consideration for minutes. I look at a kid like Holloway and frankly never understood why the coach wasnt' giving him much more. The development of both McLeod and Holloway stalled bigtime under Woody.

Myself I've been in situations where nepotism and associates and friend hires occurred. It often creates ripples.

The team is in 31st place. I’d question your allegiance if you were happy about this.

Did you consult your leadership group before making this decision:

Holland: Ya I talked to them all and got their input.

Jackson: No they didn't have anything to do with this decision.

Kenny you done f***ed up!!
Yeah I caught that. Strange. Could be referring to a change not a specific coach hire. Or how is it going with Woody.

Seeing how Kris deploys Holloway, etc is something I am looking forward to. Holloway was great last night.

Kris Knoblauch said there’s going to be some positional changes on coaching too. I’m assuming this is why Gulutzan is still there? Maybe he gets more of an expanded role than just PP coach. There is no way Coffey can fix this defence. He looked like he was on a bender last night

i bet this blows up. I hope it works, but I bet this whole situation gets worse.

fired a.650 coach who has a roster without a competent goalie.

Holland can get f**ked.
Any coach worth his salt should also be better than 3-9 when his top guys are just average and one is injured and below average.

What changes were made to compensate for this? I didn't see any. His deployment sucked a** too

Just saying "That 0.650" coach is pure laziness

It's like nobody grasps how productive McDrai and the PP were

Don't forget. A well liked coach with zero issues in the room and a team still bought in. This has huge backfire potential. But risk assessment isn't Kenny's strong suit (see Campbell contract).

Since Jackson became CEO:

'I know a guy'
Best In Class or just guys I know. Meh same thing probably.

He said the roles would stay the same.

McDavid quote from August 24 2023..

"I love playing in Edmonton, and I truly feel at home there. Lauren also enjoys being in Edmonton. Many aspects align for us in Edmonton. We are very comfortable there. However, that being said, it's three years down the road. We need to assess where our lives are at and proceed from there.
I don't say this to raise eyebrows or cause panic. It's just the reality. But I genuinely love playing in Edmonton, and I am fully committed to winning here with this group...
Once babies start coming, there will be a strong urge to move back down east near family.

If you don’t have goaltending you don’t win many games.

You can talk to your group about it.

It does not mean they have final say.

That's what I got out of it.

It's hilarious that people here think Connor probably has an office upstairs, kicks his feet back up on the desk, etc. Hell, McDavid probably summoned Woody up there and fired him by himself and then called Knobber up and hired him too. All with a cigar in his mouth.
What i got from it was that Jackson was a little miffed that Kenny was stoking the narrative that you mentioned in the end of your post. Whether Kenny was aware of it or not. Why bother mentioning the leadership groups input at all? I'm sure Jackson feels it adds a level of undue criticism and pressure to these players who are clearly having difficulties dealing with their current situation. I just found it funny that Kenny's new boss totally stuffed him 2 seconds after he spoke. Then finished up with something like," Just because he was Connors coach in 2015 doesn't have anything to do with him being hired here.."

Yes you are 100% right. That is on Holland too. I still hated his deployment, lack of accountability, etc. ALmost everybody here knew it. When 97/29 do not go Superman and the PP does not go superman, you need to be ready. That is on Holland, but I think Woody's time was done. He was making stupid decisions and getting desperate.

It sucks. All they can hope for is a coaching bump and see where it goes now.
