Doesn't sound like a panic hire, more that the guys upstairs didn't really like Woodcroft and wanted their own guy.

Jives with the rumors that switch to zone defense was an offseason decision made above the coaching staff's heads.

I remember Nick Nurse having a brutal introductory press conference and then winning the NBA title in his first year. I'm pretty convinced even the game plan last night was revised. Radically different D positional usage and stressing front of net presence more than we've seen all season. Something as simple as that made differences last night. Players collapsing in coverage made a difference.

Coffey has been making suggestions for awhile, and this has been on the burner for awhile. I'd wonder how long.

The way I see it the org is acknowledging (like the plaeyrs do) that they were drastically outcoached last spring and in both series and that change was needed. However given Woody's record prior he was given a chance to implement some changes. His changes were a tirefire and seriously any coach deserves to get fired with a 2-9-1 record. Decision was already made as several pundits point out. Everybody on the team knew of coaching change before yesterdays game. Thus the team having more jump.

Holland is a figurehead. he was long before arriving here. But agreed he's not calling the shots. I felt with Campbell being sent down that was a message as well given that was Hollands find.

Maybe Coffey was an advisor to the coaches also…?=D

I'll give it to some of the press core, they asked salient, pertinent, pointed questions for once. But once again, no accountability from (mis)management. Screams of panic and no real planning, even 2-5 days out to give the poor sap new guy to at least get his house in order a bit. Could have done this earlier in the season and stop the hemorrhaging but I guess they gave Woodcroft enough rope.. to hang himself?

Not really. I think an owner worth 4.5 billion dollars has very little if any involvement in something as small as Oilers +.

What I find interesting is a HC gets to pick his staff. Knoblach inherits the forever incumbent Schwartz, Gulutzan and has Coffey gifted a position.

Gulutzan has not been the problem here. He's the one guy I would keep on. Not sure about Coffey.

Schwartz will be gone. Woody was helping to keep him here by deferring and meeting with him so much. As of today Schwartz probably toast too. Just as a note Coffey when playing had all reaction style goalies, not blockform goalies. What Schwartz advocates would not sit well with Coffey.

Coffey as well could be here just as more of his persona of being the world class D of his time, a legend, and a guy like that, anybody listens to. If theres discord, disagreement Coffey will help settle it hopefully. Coffey might be the ideal to work with superstars and D. Coffey is also extremely intelligent. That rarely hurts.

Oilers+ is the first service of its kind in the NHL. It's also a controversial decision to put once-free content behind a paywall, one that could offend the fanbase. It's also a brand new source of revenue for the organization. That's not an automatic function of an organization that just gets done. I very much doubt Katz had zero input into this decision. Was he involved in the execution of the service and setting it up and all that? No. But doubtful he didn't have some say.
