Confirmed with Link: Jay Woodcroft and Dave Manson fired - no more Woody during NNN - Kris Knoblauch hired, Coffey as assistant

We replaced Woodcroft with an CHL/AHL coach. Jackson and Coffey are a joke.

Next time people feel sorry for McDavid not winning anything, remember the guy would rather be comfortable than winning.

Hopefully GM McDavid is happy. Hes been calling the shots for awhile.
Regardless of what one thinks about the coaching ability of these guys these are McD nepotism type hires. Is McD's dad gettign a job too?

Edmonton McD's Doesn't sound catchy.

That said I'll look at how the team responds to this but I don't think McD reccomendationss should be honored after Connor Brown fiasco

I'm not convinced Mcd is the best judge of personnel or that he should be given that authority.

I've never seen anything like this in hockey where one player dictates so much of what goes on. I wonder how the team respond to this.

They were better running a 1-2-2 forecheck last season than the modified 1-3-1 this year.

Now the DZ system - that’s an issue that’s gonna require fixing. Oilers players seemingly can’t grasp how to properly play a Box+1.
They were running a full 1-1-3, not 1-3-1 Cloned.. just minor correction. You can see even in the last game they had 3 back at the blue line, not the neutral zone.

I don't understand how guys with years of experience in systems play forgot how said systems work. The commitment certainly hasn't been there.

Honestly if I was Knoblauch the first thing I’d do is go and ask Gulutzan his opinion. He’s a coach himself and has been through multiple head coaches and system changes. He knows what works and what doesn’t with this group. At the very least he can offer an opinion on why it didn’t work this year.

Woody was the main reason we lost to Vegas last year. His failures to adjust, failures to use personnel, refusal to even consider starting anybody but Skinner who was obviously struggling.

Even if we had Adin Hill no way Woody would be playing him or Schwartz would recommend him. A lot of coaches scouts favor certain styles of goalies. unorthodox styles like Adin Hill get usually tossed into obscurity these days. its a real fault in current goalie evaluation.

thats on Holland, and what did he do about it in the offseason?

Now look at this mess

I feel really sorry for Manson, I couldn't imagine what he's going through right now but am I the only one who thinks this is an odd thing to bring up right now ? It is a business, after-all.
Odd how? Ya it's a business but a little empathy for what the guy might be going to through can't be acknowledged. Wow.

The amount of money Katz has put into this team is a small fraction of the return on his initial investment of purchasing it. His investment has grown by ten times. He bought it for less than $200M in 2008. It's now worth over a billion dollars. So, you know . . .
It’s a good thing the organization is expanding.

f*** asking Gulutzan, if he wants to stick around, ask Dusty Schwartz what the secret is to coaching immortality

100%

On a lighter note…Oilers last 4 coaches:

Ken Hitchcock (The cock)
Dave Tippett (Tip)
Jay Woodcroft (Woody)
Kris Knoblauch (Knob)

Do the Oilers brass realize that they don’t have to stick with coaches named after male anatomy? :D

The Knob is really compromised of the Tip and the Wood.

This organization really has hitched their wagon to cock, huh?

Well that's all said and done, so how about some personnel moves now? Where's the new analytics guy telling us who the next diamonds in the rough are and which guys we should look at getting out of here?

They hired that acclaimed blogger / analytics guy to build the analytics department in September. Can’t remember the name

So if Crosby retires and gets hired as an assistant coach will you say he’s not qualified?
Yep. Just like Wayne wasn't qualified either. You know why ove 50% of restaurants fail in the first 2 years? Bad management. Just because you can cook doesn't mean you can run a business. Just because you can play hockey it doesn't mean you can coach.

How is it not clear to people on here that this is NOT a Holland hire. It's clear he's not GM anymore

Yup, Holland isn’t getting fired either, he’s a figurehead at this point and will ride into the sunset at season’s end. This is Jackson and McDavid’s team now, for better or worse

This is weird. I just saw the Hartford Wolf Pack play a couple of weeks ago. They had been outshot 24-6 by the end of the second period and looked absolutely lost out there. One game, I know, but for me personally it's pretty bizarre that my NHL team is now coached by the guy who led one of the worst hockey performances I've seen in ages.

Seattle was outshot 26-4 at one point in their game against us last night. Should they fire their coach too?

Weren't we running a 1-2-2 last year? I know that Woodcroft ran a 1-1-3 in his first season here, and reverted back to it this year, but I thought last year we ran a 1-2-2.

Honestly I don't think the system makes a difference right now. It's not like Woodcroft has been telling the players "make sure to let your man walk into the slot and NEVER cover him... also if you could make terrible pinches at inopportune times, that would be perfect".

The hope is that we get the new coach bump from players giving that extra 10% to try and impress a new coach.
I’m more talking about the box+1.

They looked like they were eons away from figuring it out.

Like I’ve said, the players and coach share responsibility here.

The players shouldn’t be having this much difficulty committing to or executing a passive NZ system and a Box+1 in the DZ. It’s not some new fangled swarm system like Eakins tried to implement. A good portion of the league plays these same systems.

At the same time, it’s on the coaches for being stubborn with it and trying to force something that was clearly not working.
