Confirmed with Link: Jay Woodcroft and Dave Manson fired - no more Woody during NNN - Kris Knoblauch hired, Coffey as assistant

I always said Woody coaching record benefitted from the heat up stage that McDrai always have Fe, Mar, APR. This distorted what his record is because these are always the ttimes that McDrai are best. therefore the team doing better. Woody's record in first half of seasons is a lot different.
Yes, & actually getting NHL quality goaltending helped.

I'm not even saying great goaltending, just competent. I don't care what anyone says, players play differently than they normally would when they KNOW their goaltending isn't helping the cause.

So he was slightly better than the quote made it seem, but still not in Cooper or Bernard stratosphere
Few are, but time will tell how he turns out.

Still makes me sad to this day that if the Oilers hired someone competent instead of Mactavish back in the day, they could have had Cooper instead of Eakins.

Talk about an all time boneheaded bad move.

I think Jackson made the decision based on getting McDavid to stay here longer. Can’t blame him either as his job is dependant on McDavid staying.

Assuming Jackson should know best what would keep McDavid here im okay with. Hope he read the room right though.

You only had to look at the defense making the same mistakes game after game, they can’t seem to cover the Sisters Of The Poor. But FFS get Shwartz off the payroll.

This is so two-faced of the hockey world media

"Team might need a coaching change"

Team makes the change

Hockey media: "them firing their coach was a might be a mistake"

What if Woody was actually a good head coach stifled by Dave Manson’s shitty D coaching? I mean there’s reason to think Manson was a huge downgrade from Playfair.

Knoblauch plus Nepotism Paul could be the same story. Or worse. Likely worse.

You were waving pom poms for him. All the talk about power stance, etc. Its like you were in love with him. Really I don't recall anybody on the board being more enthused with Woody than you.

The guy always struck me as an arrogant ass. Some people around the league that feel that way too.
Actually after the initial pom pom stage for @Cloned I was working out of town and very busy. I was shocked when I would pop in here once in a while and see Cloned slamming Woodcroft for his coaching choices. Especially in the playoffs. That's what I saw from my perspective, anyway. His Golden Boy went stale on him pretty quickly.

One thing I liked about a particular quote Coffey once said was about moving the puck up the ice. He said he would get so frustrated watching guys keep turning back into their own zone instead of pushing pace and moving the puck forward quickly.

Easy for Coffey to say, very easy for Coffey to do. Bread and butter of his career.

It'll be a bit different coaching that into, say, a 6'5" Desharnais with cement for shoes and cement for hands. Wayne found that out the hard way in Phoenix.

Looking at Coffey's coaching record, I'm almost unsure he has ever coached two players simultaneously who, placed atop another, would be taller than V Desharnais

I hope some serious questions are asked during the media availability at 2 today

I want to know why a goalie coach hasn't been found yet, and at what point are they willing to wait to sell the farm on an established goalie instead of running every season on hopes and dreams

What Coffey could know about modern-day defensive systems beyond other candidates is beyond me. I hope he proves me wrong, but I hate this part of it most of all.

He played in a period where 3 guys out of 17 on a team knew how to skate.

I don't mind the Knoblauch hire. It's whatever. The Coffey hire is patently ridiculous though, an embarrassment even.

Knoblauch was McDavid's coach in Erie. He also coached Brown and Foegele in Erie as well, the latter after McDavid left. He has other Edmonton connections though. He played junior in Edmonton and also played at the U of A after his junior career was over.

In general, I like Knoblauch, but in this situation this is a huge risk. If it goes south I have no idea what that means for McDavid long term in Edmonton.
This can also be right. This can still be a big risk. We have to play it out. I would not have minded a no nonsense approach with Sutter either.
