Chabot maybe earned his contract a few years ago but certainly in the last 2 seasons he has not lived up to it. Right now he's no better than a Five million dollar Dman.
I think he can come back though. Playing under DJ Smith and 30 minutes a night probably didn't help him develop good defensive habits.

Good luck trying to get a Chabot replacement for 5 million a year. In today's market that's a #4 defenseman not a guy who is a #1 or #2 on most teams in the league.

Analytically Chabot is an elite defenseman. Eye test he makes huge gaffes but generally benefits the team overall despite the downsides. If he reduces the huge Gaffes then I think he'd be worth every penny.

Where are the stats that shows me Chabot is elite? Not elite offensively and below average defensively. A Zub type defensemen would be an ideal replacement for Chabot and he makes under five .

I'll add to that analysis... Let's compare Chabot's and Sanderson's with-vs-without charts by Micah.

They both seem to have very positive effects on xGA vs xGF. Chabot's game definitely leads to higher-event hockey than Sanderson's. Let's see if the new defensive system affects that skew.

Staios says he's disappointed Chychrun's name is out there. He says if he were on other teams he'd ask as well. Says Chychrun can play right. "We'll see how this comes to fruition," says Staios. Says cap is a factor.

Where does this tell me Chabot is elite??? Give me stats showing how he compares with elite Dmen like Makar, Heiskanen, Hughes, Morrisey etc.
I'm not saying Chabot is bad; he is good at a number of things but that does not make him elite and worth $8 million per year. And I was advocating replacing him with a Zub type D man not a guy like Hamonic.

I don't view 8 million a year as elite. It's the going rate for a top pair defenseman on a long term deal these days. Some get good deals on their plays below that number because of timing or tax purposes but 8 million just isn't what it used to be. An Elite D-man is going to cost 9.5 probably.

Would you guys sign him to a 7.5m x 8 contract?
No.

I still don't know what he is. He makes just as many irritating , confounding plays like Chabot. I just don't understand his reads, and his pinching choices. Yet somehow his numbers, analytically do not jive with what I am watching. And I desperately want to like this guy. Couple of those plays last night just boggle the mind, and clearly he is fighting confidence issues or maybe the trade rumours are impacting his play .

As JR pointed out this morning, Staios did say that he is disappointed that his name is out there, but he did not say that Chychrun is not being moved and is part of the team's long range plans...

Maybe playing on the right is contributing to the eye test

Yes, he's heavy and has been getting better on RD every game. Personally if he signs that I am trading Chabot and I'm fine with it.

He has an absolute bomb too. When the pp goes stagnant they should just have him blasting away from the middle of the ice. The team hasn't had a guy that can shoot it like this since Chara.

Chabot is not an easy player to play with. He's irratic and unpredictable. I'd like to see them call up Kleven and see how Chychrun does playing RD with him. That's a big d pair.

Karlsson gets $11.5M I think. That would be elite.

I wonder if Staios is disappointed that Chychrun's name is out there because Staios talked in supposed confidence with a few teams about trading Chychrun.

Personally I want to keep Chychrun. Let's get a competent defence again instead of the sub-standard one we have had for a few years now.

There is nothing remotely heavy about his game. His stick checks are vintage Wade Redden

Chabot is not great offensively and also not great defensively. Overpaid at $8M per! What is he really worth? $5M per?

He's probably 6.5 per year given his production/shortcomings right now. If we don't sign chabot when we do maybe we don't get others signed long term so it sorta works out. If Brady went bridge he'd be 10.5 mil on his next contract. Same with Stutzle.

There's only 16 D with higher salary than Chabot

I'd pay Chychrun 8 million happily. Staios can do what he needs to do with Chabot, but i want Chychrun signed long term.
