We know what it can look like undermanned from a personnel perspective. Imo, we have to tread carefully with Chychrun and shouldn't be shutting the door on re-signing him. Moves can always be made later if necessary. It really hasn't been long for the top 4 playing all together, and barely at all under JM. He was one of many looking chaotic this season. There's all this talk about RD being a very rare commodity, so I'd rather have a good LD playing on the right or 3 good ones on 3 pairings than some non answer natural RD in the top 4. Tough call between maximizing value at the deadline, or waiting until the summer when they can see what they fill the role with or if a re-signing makes sense.

I'd be inclined to keep both, trade Hamonic and Brannstrom, maybe trade a prospect like Kleven and see if we can land a top end right D.
Trade Kleven?!... hunh. He's exactly the 3rd pairing d man they need right now. How about this teams still rebuilding and they actually keep its young players and prospects.

This is the roster that Dorion built and I still maintain it's a good looking roster (on paper) with promise for the future.

We know now that the team defense (forwards and defensemen) and goaltending isn't good enough. But back in August, I think a lot of us had this roster in the playoffs.

I don't fault Dorion for the Debrincat and Chychrun moves. At a certain point, you have to break out of rebuild mode and make the jump. With hindsight, it's clear we should've targeted a natural RHD. Who's to say Dorion didn't and couldn't land one? Maybe Chychrun was the consolation prize. Regardless, Chychrun was a massive get and at the time, it was the envy of every other fanbase.

I do fault Dorion for handing out massive contracts to players like Chabot and Norris before they had really proved themselves. I think he may have jumped the gun with Sanderson as well.
The Philly game on sunday is anchored in my head. 2-0. With Pinto's return, the team is actually healthy for the first time in ages.

Looks like Chychy is still interested in staying with Ottawa.

Chych actually wanting to play here makes me want us to find a way to keep him, it’s a beautiful thing

Kleven is a good LD prospect at this time. I would rather not trade him; however, if we could get a very good young RD that can play in the NHL now, I might do it.

I’m guessing Dumba or Roy wind up here.
Can we afford them?

I honestly feel like Chych makes too many boneheaded defensive plays to make me want to keep him here long-term. We have too many d-men who have questionable decision-making skills or lack of one-on-one ability. Chych, JBD, Hamonic, Brannstrom are all below average in my opinion. Chabot has the capacity at least.

Last night against the Habs Chych had a great opportunity to break the puck out by moving forward. Instead, he turns around, whips it around the boards and it leads to a giveaway and sustained offensive pressure for Montreal. This is what has killed us this year.

Yeah, that was such a bizarre and unnecessary play.

They cant play the current bottom pairing LD unfortunately thats who needs to be traded. Brannstrom just doesnt fit.

So fill another hole while emptying another?... I agree they need RD badly but they need a ld too. One of chychrun and Chabot won't survive.
I see your point. But you're talking about Kleven in our third pair. Who plays LD on our second pair if Chychrun is gone? What we need is a solid top 4.

I remember that play. 🤦‍♂️

I'm sure Jaques wrote down the time for a future "what not to do" video session.

Sanderson or Chabot

Ya JBD had a screwup as well along the boards, that nearly turned into a goal.

Chabot proved himself to be a big minute defenceman and earned his contract. Norris might have been pre-mature.

One thing I know for sure is that Sanderson was a hit, not a miss.
